Broadly speaking, yes. Part of Boglery is to set up your allocations and let them do their thing. This is the philosophy that gives us ["lazy" portfolios](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/11/10/t-bill-and-chill-why-jack-bogles-strategy-of-lazy-investing-is-making-a-comeback-.html). A decent minority of Bogleheads check their portfolios [once a quarter or less](https://bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38900). If someone's taking that hands-off of an approach, then I think it's quite reasonable to play it safe. Then again, there's nothing to say they couldn't allocate some money to a more volatile fund like XLK or SMH and let *that* ride. They do advise against [taking too little risk](https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Bogleheads%C2%AE_investment_philosophy#Never_bear_too_much_or_too_little_risk), and that's probably why Vanguard's target funds have moved on from the old recommendation of "your age in bonds" to something more like "120 minus your age in stocks". I can see where you're coming from though; I'm 20 years from conventional retirement age and I've held on through a couple big drawdowns, I don't see the need for bonds at all. On the other end, Bogle strongly discouraged speculation. He's said [commodities don't belong in anybody's portfolio](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/11/10/t-bill-and-chill-why-jack-bogles-strategy-of-lazy-investing-is-making-a-comeback-.html), and Vanguard is straight up not making the spot Bitcoin ETFs available to account holders.

Contrarian suggestion: do the part about stopping all trading, getting a job, and saving money. Once you have a job and some income to invest ... don't go back to trading just yet. Instead look into the [Boglehead approach](https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Bogleheads%C2%AE_investment_philosophy). You can ask questions about it [here](/r/Bogleheads) if you want. It's a simple approach with a solid track record. It's also *very* tax efficient if you go with the ETF version in taxable accounts. Instead of paying taxes on short-term gains as you will with frequent trading, you'll pay taxes only when you take money out of the funds, which ought to be at the long-term cap gains rate if you're doing it right. In the ten years or so since my wife and I retired I've been taking out $70k or so each year which puts those cap gains in the *zero percent bracket*. Most years we've paid close to zero on federal income taxes. Then after you've got a solid financial foundation, if for some reason you don't like the simplicity and tax efficiency of the Boglehead approach, maybe go back to trading with money you can afford to lose.

It is better to take a little time and make the right moves than to rush into anything. The fact that you are looking at performance numbers is a bad sign because it may lead to performance chasing (which is usually not a good idea). When I was younger I wasted a lot of time picking investments thinking this would make me rich, instead I learned that I should have focused more on improving my income and increasing my contribution rate. Consistently investing on a schedule is where you really see your portfolio growing, investing every once in a while doesn't usually lead to success. Your greatest wealth building tool is your income. The more money you earn the more money you can invest and reach your goals even sooner, it's as simple as that.

This is a huge opportunity, but also a bit of a burden. I can imagine this inheritance is causing you a bit of stress. Properly managing a large sum of money like this will take considerable knowledge and care. You seem to be a very level-headed person who despite all the challenges you've faced in life, seems to have made some very good decisions. Still, at only 20 years old, and without family to ask for help, you do not have much experience to draw from. I'm 56, with kids roughly your age, and here's what I would tell them if they were in your situation. First, do not feel like you need to figure this out quickly or all at once. To start, go to two different banks and open up 2 different FDIC insured savings account and deposit roughly half of the money in each account. Yes, the interest earned is a shitty return on investment compared to the many other options, but this gives you a safe, secure place to park your money while you figure some shit out. At this early stage of things, the risk you face isn't a low ROI on your investment. The real risk you face is making bad decisions or getting hustled by some con-artist financial advisor. They are out there. Most are honest, but even the honest ones can do great harm with their incompetence. **And here's the key thing:** you lack the knowledge and experience to properly assess if a financial advisor is honest or competent, and that puts you at great risk. You need some time to ramp up your knowledge of personal finance. Parking the money in a FDIC-insured savings account gives you that time. It sounds like you have your basic, day-to-day living expenses and needs in line, so keep up that good work and spend your free time boosting your knowledge. This sub-reddit can be helpful. But, there's a lot of people who see themselves as the next Warren Buffet who are more than happy to spout out well-meaning, but ultimately stupid advice. I see all these 1-word or 1-sentence answers which are complete garbage. Ignoring people will become an important skill. Unless someone knows ***you*** and your goals in life, their advice is just pure BS. Also, be very quiet about your finances. Honestly, trust no one, and tell no one. You will likely have people crawling out from under every nearby rock to either beg for money or tell you their grand idea for what you should do with that money. And, as I said earlier, you are in no position to properly understand and evaluate all these offers. It will make you miserable, too. One thing I would prioritize is learning the difference between investing and gambling. Buying single stocks or (even worse) anything crypto is really just gambling. It is what people with little chance of real, meaningful financial success do when they are desperate. You don't need that. Investing takes patience and time, and since you have a stable financial situation now and a large nest egg, you can be patient, which will pay off. So, pour over the information here, but I would instead focus on researching the hell out of this website: [https://bogleheads.org/](https://bogleheads.org/) This is arguable one of the most boring websites you will find. But the information and experience here is some of the best free information you will find. Check out [https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Bogleheads%C2%AE\_investment\_philosophy](https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Bogleheads%C2%AE_investment_philosophy) to get an understanding of the Boglehead investment philosophy, which I suspect will line up nicely with your approach. Soak up as much information as you can from the forum and wiki on this website, which will help you ramp up your financial literacy. Then you can consider hiring a financial advisor. The FAQ link in the sidebar on "WSJ guide on how to pick a financial planner" is a great place to start, but only after you have elevated your own knowledge. Finally, in order to develop a good financial plan, you need to also have financial goals. You are 20 years old, you have most of your life in front of you. Put some serious thought into what you want from the next 12 months, the next 3-5 years and maybe 10 years out. That will help you build your financial plan, when the time comes. Also, always remember that plans will change, and that's okay. The planning process and the knowledge you gain while planning will help you change your plans when the time comes. So, good luck, I hope everything turns out great for you.

Fair point. I'll qualify it as "near-ironclad" on the basis that AUPH was subject to an Inter-Partes Review last year by Sun Pharmaceuticals which was [ultimately settled in January 2023](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230103005512/en/Aurinia-Announces-LUPKYNIS%C2%AE-voclosporin-Patent-Challenge-Settlement-Reached-With-Sun-Pharmaceuticals). The IPR was considered by many to be weak and frivolous, and only filed as a revenge countersuit to AUPH filing suit against Sun months prior for a separate patent infringement case. AUPH have since applied for two continuations on their patent for Lupkynis which constrain the patent's scope, consequently closing the door further on future IPRs being filed against them.

Distributors exploited the chip supply crunch, charging exorbitant amounts of money for parts in high demand. Not to mention the counterfeit parts companies had to contend with, as distributors and peddlers prioritized profit over vetting the origins of the components. I've heard numerous horror stories from friends working in smaller companies. Fortunately, I work for a company sitting on billions of dollars in cash, boasting healthy margins, and not employed by an auto manufacturer with piss poor margins and engineering standards. So sorry for not having a good opinion about distributors. Relative to a engineer, an FAE or AE from a distributor is indeed incompetent; saying otherwise would be a blatant lie. GM and Ford have all the bottom-of-the-barrel engineers, the Engineering work we do is orders of magnitude more complex than what people do at Auto manufacturers because of all the complex RF work involved with IoT devices. GM Engineers opinion mean nothing to someone working for a FAANG-level company. My stock compensation alone is more the total compensation of the design engineers I know at auto manufacturers. So please, don't tell me how you make three times more now because you never got paid the top 10% total compensation working as an engineer in the automotive domain. so your attempt to throw shade at me regarding sales vs. design compensation is not meaningful lol IoT devices aren't even among the top three money-makers for our company. Our other lucrative segments shifted to STM micro earlier this year, as our company overall did not appreciate how NXP cut us loose without prior notice. Worked with NXPs app engg team for the longest time, they were incompetent AF. They had to bring someone from the R&D team into the conversation all the freaking time, it was painful and at some point we got accustomed it it. STM on the other hand are easy to deal with, their app engg team is sufficiently knowledgeable, our development cycles are unbelievable smoother now. I don't see the bigger picture I admit it and you don't supply to big tech because most of them buy directly from manufacturers but you get offended when I say you don't see the bigger picture either.

Thai person here. Bangkok born and raised, but now living in another part of the country. Generally, you need around 30% down payment to buy a home here. Also, non-citizens are not allowed to own properties, but can opt for a 99-year least. If your husband is still a Thai citizen, then the deed to the property will only be in his name. Please make sure that you both talk this issue through and that you're both okay with this situation. My question: Do you think you'll actually be buying properties worth as much as 300k (USD, I presume)? Real estate prices in Bangkok vary greatly, but a modest renovated 4BR townhouse should set you back only around 150k (i.e, 5.5 million THB). At 300k (i.e., 11 million THB), you're looking at a really nice 2BR condo right in Bangkok CBD, or a historic wooden home straight from the turn of the century. Property taxes in Thailand are not too bad. For condos, the association fees generally set you back around 500 dollars per year. Utilities are around 60 dollars (2000 Bahts) a month. Have you lived in Thailand for a long period before? If not, it might be better for you to try renting for a year first and see if settling down to buy a home here is a suitable move for you. GI tolerability with semaglutide 2.4 mg maintenance and cessation after dose escalation was evaluated using STEP 4 data among 803 participants tolerating 20 weeks of semaglutide run‐in. >Results >GI AEs were more common with semaglutide 2.4 mg than placebo, with most frequently nausea (43.9% vs. 16.1% of participants), diarrhoea (29.7% vs. 15.9%), vomiting (24.5% vs. 6.3%) and constipation (24.2% vs. 11.1%). Most GI AEs with semaglutide were non‐serious (99.5% of AEs), mild‐to‐moderate (98.1%), transient and occurred most frequently during/shortly after dose escalation. Few semaglutide‐treated participants (4.3%) permanently discontinued treatment for GI AEs. In STEP 1‐3, mean WL with semaglutide 2.4 mg was similar in participants without (9.6%‐17.1%) versus with GI AEs (11.4%‐17.7%). Consistent with this observation, mediation analysis found that GI AEs contributed little to semaglutide‐induced WL: of the additional 7.6%‐14.4% WL with semaglutide versus placebo, <1 percentage point was mediated by GI AEs. In STEP 4, semaglutide 2.4 mg maintenance was well tolerated. AE = Adverse Event

It really depends on how much effort you want to put into picking stocks. You may want to simply use a typical boglehead portfolio - [https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Bogleheads%C2%AE\_investing\_start-up\_kit#Example\_Portfolios](https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Bogleheads%C2%AE_investing_start-up_kit#Example_Portfolios) Many robo-advisors can also setup these types of allocation portfolios if you prefer to simply use a guided process to define your allocation and have the robo handle your rebalancing and contribution allocations. The choice of brokerage and adviser will depend on the types of services that you want from the firm. Betterment, Marcus Invest, and Fidelity are probably fine. Fidelity will offer more services than a smaller firm like Betterment and Fidelity has branch offices if you want to meet with an adviser. Marcus is part of Goldman Sachs so they may have better banking services if you also want banking services.

These are pretty typical types of funds that are offered in a sponsored retirement plan. Basically, it is offering you a choice of an income equity fund, a large cap equity fund, a midcap fund, and 2 variations of growth funds. If you are in your early 20's, the simplest is an allocation of the State Street Equity 500 and the Vanguard mid-cap. That gives you broad exposure to a US equity market. You likely also have a bond fund in your 401k and you could allocate a small amount to that fund. The boglehead allocation model is a good place to look for allocation concepts. Lol, "lack of understanding", I'm literally an AE at an ERP company lol (direct competitor to Oracle). You mentioning cloud is all I need to know to understand you have no clue what you're talking about. How do you explain how Unity just came out and changed their stance from "developers themselves will pay this" to "Now Nintendo, Sony and MSFT will pay us"? Unity games on the MSFT marketplace don't use the Unity cloud lmao...That's like MSFT charging Amazon based on how much their own cloud uses MSFT products lol, you really lack a complete understanding of the industry and situation. How do you explain Unity coming out a few hours ago and clarifying that MSFT, Sony and Nintendo will foot the bill? Seriously, what's your logic behind that? Do you genuinely think MSFT, Sony and Nintendo will respond with "Yeah, that's totally we cool, even though we didn't agree to this shit at all, and we didn't even make the games". Can you name one example where someone retroactively started charging a completely seperate entity for old software? I'll come back here and laugh my ass off when Sony, MSFT, and Nintendo respond.

It’s definitely a classic by pretty much every states classic car definition sitting at 43 years old. I’d get the classic plates in my state but it limits how much you can drive them. I’ve seen some high mileage 90s Corollas/Camrys go in the $5000+ range which seems unheard of. I also benefit from the “Weeb Tax”. It’s not an AE86 but it’s close enough (RWD Corolla Liftback) that the guys who can’t afford AE86s are buying what I have.

I see what you're saying but fundamentally disagree in this scenario. If it's considered a moat, then you can also consider Internet Explorer in 2010 to have a much better moat than Paypal does now (58% market share in 2010 vs Paypals 40% market share) Their market share is twice as large as Stripes but it's in a continuing decline. Stripe has a YOY growth of 69.5%, meanwhile Paypal is at 8.21%. I'd hardly call a 40% market share (and consistently declining one at that) as a moat. Especially when their competitor is growing at a rate 800+% faster. The only way it's considered a moat is if their size discourages other companies from even attempting to compete, and considering Stripes growth I'm just not buying it. I also work as a AE for an ERP company and directly talk to CEO's and CFO's on which payment provider they'll want to implement, and most of the time it's Stripe after I show them the fees associated for each provider. There has never been a point in the entire company where we had to say "Oh, you 100% need Paypal". Stripe is suprisingly just as well known to these decision makers and I'd argue has close to the same reputation that Paypal has. Nobody cares about what other people are doing when they make these major decisions for their company, especially with the drastic differences in Paypals fees vs Stripes.

[https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Bogleheads%C2%AE\_investing\_start-up\_kit](https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Bogleheads%C2%AE_investing_start-up_kit) form the Getting Started section. Being very generic, the risk of an ETF is defined by what it holds. The larger and more diverse of a holding it is, the more the risk is spread out so that the decline/failure of any one holding proportionally affects the over all value to a lesser degree. So if you look at a fund that say tracks a specific sector, the risk of that find is determined by the the companies it is invested in and any factors that may affect the sector as a whole. If the fund tracks a country in some way, such as the S&P 500 is composed of some of the largest companies in america, the risk spread across sectors, but is still to a higher degree going to be related to anything that would affect the country as a whole. And then if you take a fund that tracks everything, such as a world wide etf, then that would be some of the largest diversification and risk dilution. All that to say though, that the more you dilute risk, you are also potentially diluting returns. It's a double edged sword that, while it is true that the more diversification you have the negative performance of any one participant affect the over all performance less, the same holds for positive performance. You hold one company and it goes bankrupt, you're at a complete loss. If your one company performs amazing, you perform amazing. You hold a fund that holds 1000 companies and one of them goes bankrupt, you still have all the other companies. Same fund one company does amazing, well, it only does amazing with the money allocated to it out of the 1000 holdings.

Yes, his post does seem to have more of a self-coaching out loud dynamic. That's fine. Passive is great for most people. My only caveat is even a "passive strategy" is still kind of chart extrapolation at some level. Just a really long term one. 60/40 and all weather type allocations are the main two passive strategies. But you still have to actively pick one. In reality 60/40 could/should be called an active anti-inflation tilt. Because it bets on disinflation (bond positive), growth, and inverse stock/bond correlation. That's in vogue because the 4 decade chart has been bonds straight up, inflation straight down, and stocks inversely correlated to bonds. If those were reversed, like most of the [previous](https://d2csxpduxe849s.cloudfront.net/media/469BA343-4BDA-4DA8-82EFE0F61A0F858A/C397F16D-D6DC-4241-9DE4CAFD3DEA59D9/webimage-244C41A9-D766-4CB7-83FF125F0EA0F3AE.jpg) era "passive" would look like all-weather. At some level we're all just doing TA, implicitly or explicitly.

I’m saying this as someone who recently got in to investing so take it with a grain of salt. From what I gathered talking to the average joe about say to day things and reading incessantly about investing for two months this is my two cents. Nobody talks about Tesla anymore and I’m seeing more and more of them with 30 day tags which leads me to believe people are getting them used at what they think is a good deal. In my life experiences I only had 30 day tags on a vehicle when I let the registration expire and it was the only option since I couldn’t transfer the tag. Poor financial decisions lead to those situations and I look at people buying teslas making poor financial decisions unconsciously. I think the hype has passed and Elon isn’t doing himself any favors. I haven’t looked at Tesla as a company just my opinion as a laymen. Marvel/Star Wars hype seems to be waning as well. I’m not into either just an observation as what I hear people talk about. Haven’t researched Disney so once again take it with a grain of salt. I keep reading about how credit card debt is getting out of control. I can see AE losing value if credit cards start tanking. They don’t seem to be as omnipresent as Visa and Mastercard. Once again I haven’t looked into their online retail options but the company has been around as long as I can remember but I don’t see them as a growth opportunity. Those are the ones that I haven’t looked into for reasons already stated. If I had them and could make a profit, personally (as a new investor) I would look at other options. The other two if I wasn’t at a great return I’d sell. Just trying to give you my opinion of how I see them and I look at things. Pretty new to Reddit as well so if I’m blatantly wrong please don’t ruin my karma let me know why.

I think the best most simple and comprehensive way to start with investing is watching/listen/read these: 1. Start with reading and watching this cheesy but informative set of videos: [The Boglehead investment philosophy](https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Video:Bogleheads%C2%AE_investment_philosophy) 2. Read "The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns" for better understanding of index funds and investing over a long time horizon. 3. Watch [Ben Felix](https://youtu.be/yco0sC7AJ2U) videos for more in-depth empirical study based knowledge on the stock market and personal finance. 4. Ben Felix’s podcast the [rational reminder](https://youtu.be/LLbQux2OZjk) goes even more in-depth than the videos. TLDR Summary: Buy low cost market cap weighted index fund like VOO(S&P 500), VTI(total US market), or VT(total world market) no matter what the price is every month with a portion of your paycheck. Open up and use tax advantaged accounts like Roth IRA and 401K. By law you're limited on the amount you can invest in these accounts because they're so damn good. Take advantage, especially while you're young. Avoid paying money managers. Even a 1% fee can cost you 30% of your total returns over the course of your investing time horizon. Never sell and let compound interest do it's work. “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it … he who doesn't … pays it.” -Albert Einstein

I might if I didn't think they had real potential or if this wasn't my play money anyway. If this actually gets FDA approval, I see it as a replacement for a large chunk of the anti anxiety/depression market, which is huge and growing. If they can get a synthetic pheromone to generate workable results and limited AE, I don't see why most doctors wouldn't try it before moving onto using drugs that cross the blood brain barrier with permanent and awful side effects. I used to work for a company that printed anti depressant drug warnings on Bible paper so that it could be folded small enough to fit in an envelope along with the free samples going to doctor offices. If they can cut those side effects in half for a drug that is even 20% as effective as the competition, this company could be worth billions.

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with Fundrise. Roth IRA is what is known as a tax advantaged account and over time tax advantaged accounts are superior over non tax advantaged accounts because of the lack of a tax drag. So in general it is suggested tax advantaged accounts be maxed out before using taxable accounts. If I was in your shoes I would put all the money in the Roth IRA, the investments I would buy are broad based index funds. Example: https://www.fidelity.com/retirement-ira/roth-ira Investments: https://www.fidelity.com/mutual-funds/investing-ideas/index-funds 70% Fidelity ZERO Total Market Index Fund (FZROX) 30% Fidelity ZERO International Index Fund (FZILX) Both of these funds have zero expense ratio (you can't beat that). Both of these funds will roughly represent the global stock market (including growth stocks, value stocks, small, mid, and large caps, dividend stocks, REITS, etc). This is the beauty of broad based index funds, it takes the guessing out of investing and lets you focus on improving your income so you can invest more (this is how the majority of the wealth is made, over time). You have done nothing wrong, let's start there. Now for my critique. FNILX is similar to an S&P 500 Index Fund, FSKAX is a Total U.S. Stock Market Index Fund. FSKAX already contains all the stocks FNILX contains, so there is a lot of overlap there. Moving forward, I would contribute to FSKAX only and if you want to diversify further, I would add FTIHX (Total International Index Fund). Currently I follow a three fund portfolio minus the bond fund as my asset allocation strategy.
