Hi, I have ASTR stock. I saw in the news it is going private and will be sold at 0.50 share, for which I will have a loss (\~$1200) Knowing that I will have a loss on this, I am wondering if I should sell another stock that is positive, to take advantage of the loss for long-term capital gains tax. If so, how to go about calculating how much loss offsets capital gains tax? Hope this makes sense. Thanks!

Don't know the specifics of the situation, but it seems that for $ASTR there are only two options: take the deal valuing the company at $0.50 per share, or completely liquidate the company. In this context, the board thinks taking the deal is the better option, as a liquidation could leave existing shareholders with nothing at all (or at least, with less than $0.50 per share). If you don't want to sell your shares it's because you don't believe the company will need to liquidate, and thus think taking the $0.50 per share deal is a worse decision than keeping your shares and seeing how it plays out (the company might liquidate and you get nothing, or they might survive and the future share price could go back above $0.50). Regardless, unless there's a shareholder vote, you won't have a say in the decision.

Who hasn't lost money on space stocks? ASTR fucked me. My biggest L to date. I did manage to jump out when SPCE had that stupid run up and make some money. I still hold some RKLB because they are actually doing stuff, like launching rockets, and I'm sure will have their own random stonk blast off in the future.

MPW did not go the way I expected. I also put a little into space stocks like RKLB, PL, ASTR, VORB, LLAP and others after they dropped 90% from their SPAC IPO. Then they went down another 90%. I guess space is empty and full of death instead of expanding with infinite possibilities.

It'll recover imo. They're probably the better competitor out there. You could've been a nugget and bought $ASTR and lost your ass on that but Rocketlab seems like a 6-12 month horizon is pretty decent. You should transfer that to another account so you don't have to look at it if your intention is to hold and forget.

Astra Space $ASTR Thankfully I only went in with $500 which is now worth $32.50 as of today. I was already going in hard with Rocket Lab $RKLB and I continue to believe that they will succeed, but I was hyped and at the time Astra had just had a successful launch. I have since watched them fail and spend investor money in very bad ways, as well as learned that the CEO is kind of a massive asshole and regularly makes false claims and accusations. The only thing they're good for at this point is showing as a loss.

We have simlair portfolios its sounds like. I highly recommend RKLB as well. They are clearly the best option as far as investing in public company, where as ASTR and RDW as well as SPCE are all far less proven and established. I personally think Peter Beck is a smart guy - and RKLB will be big. THe success of Neutron will either make or break them.

I have a ton of losses but some of my biggest ones (above 90% losses) are ASTR, WKHS, HYLN, and RIDE. Like you, these are such a small % of my portfolio that it doesn’t matter that much. Still stings a bit when I think that could’ve been put in index funds instead but hey, you live and you learn 😅

Lol I own rocketlab which I think still has promise. I absolutely have you beat though because I hold Astra space (ASTR). I bought because they were the only space stock at the time that went through the SPAC process (I was big into SPACs at the time) and I tried to make up for getting rid of Virgin Galactic before they had their big pop in 2021. In the case of this paper, cherry-picking refers to giving equal weight when counting the few thousand stocks that are generally invested in along with the tens of thousands of stocks which are not. This produces a skew with the most relevant data in a small edge portion of the curve. When you look at something like the components of the S&P500, Russell 2000 or Russell 3000 (or similarly traded index), you produce a different (and more relevant) result which is more instructive to investors. Counting the likes of AAPL and the likes of ASTR equally and providing mean counts shouldn’t be taken as a general conclusion of the total market or its behavior. As for the 2.4%, the paper’s charts (like chart 8 on page 45) doesn’t even reflect that statistic (or at the very least, the statistics is misleading). Think of it this way, if 2.4% of all companies produced ALL the aggregated stock market wealth creation, it implies that the other 97.6% produced zero or negative wealth creation. I understand that the top company created a majority of the total aggregate growth and many produced negative growth, but there is no way that ALL global stock growth was generated by only 1600 companies over the last 30 years. Just the fact that the Russell 2000 (a capitalization weighted index) was at the all time high at the end of 2020 tells me that even the majority of small caps grew significantly during the period in question. As I am reading through this, I’m seeing a number of other issues in how data is counted and the cutoff of data included. Either way, an interesting paper, but I do not feel the conclusions are valid. Of course, this is just an opinion of a random internet person.

Rocket Lab is the only space stock I consider an investment. I also own Boeing who will be a big player in the industry. I have small positions in ASTS, ASTR, VORB, LUNR and SPCE. I traded SPCE actively years ago so all of the remaining shares I have are at no cost. These positions are all just bets with the idea that should these survive to see the space boom they’ll catch the tailwind of FOMO. My cost is low enough any spike will show a profit and should all of these go to zero I won’t lose any sleep over it. I can’t say that I recommend any of these stocks as an investment. These are pure gamble plays for me so do your DD if you plan to put any serious money in these.

Since you're talking about fun, let's pass on the major players like Lockheed, Boeing, Google, Amazon, etc... SPCE, RKLB, GSAT, LLAP, and for a real GAMBLE...ASTR SPCE Branson's space tourism company has been bleeding money for quite some time now and they've delayed launching paying customers ever since the inaugural flight. While these sound bad they are actually quite positive. The money they are burning isn't just because of bad Financials, its because they are investing in the company, ships, and infrastructure as well as the overall astronaut "experiece" facilities. And as far as the delays go, wouldn't you rather they got it right without killing anyone? They also still have enough money to burn for nearly the next 2 years without even taking in any additional revenue at their current rate. RKLB Rocket Lab is the leading satellite/small rocket company outside of Space-X. They have been continuously successful in their launches and have contracts with NASA and Space Force, as well as private customers. They are developing a new rocket to compete with Musk's company for heavier payloads. If you're looking purely at a launch company that's public then this is the one. GSAT Globalstar is a satellite company that specializes in mobile satellite services, including agricultural, government, disaster relief and more. They recently signed a huge contract with Apple for Satellite SOS/Emergency messaging. Apple has invested millions of dollars into the company to build land based stations to assist in the SOS calling as well as to build the satellites. Even if they struggle down the road it's a promising buyout option for Apple. LLAP Terran Orbital is one that is just starting to hit the mainstream as it was recently awarded a $2.4 BILLION contract to build/launch a LEO constellation of 96 satellites for earth imagery as well as over $100 Million from Lockheed Martin in an agreement through 2035. This one could Rival RKLB for supremacy in the years to come. Lastly... ASTR This one depends on if you're a degenerate gambler or not. Astra Space started off high risk, basic reward. They said hey, were gonna charge you less than anyone else but your shit may explode or not even make it to Space. And that's exactly what happened. So much so that they went back on that and said OK we're not gonna keep doing this. They are developing a new rocket that is to be tested in the latter part of this year as well as still receiving orders for their engines from satellite companies. At Penny Stock levels this one is definitely a gamble but don't we all like to make boat loads of money for next to no effort. Hope some of this helps!

I've been tracking this company for a while now, pre IPO. Yuge into space. Good ticker, terrible DD. That is not the reason why RKLB is going up. If so, care to explain why ASTR went up with it? It will take years before SpaceX will replace falcon rockets with starship. RKLB doesn't even really compete with the falcon. They'd be competing more with ASTR in the small launch space. RKLB won't really compete with SpaceX until they get the neutron up and running. It's a good company, but not going to the moon anytime soon. It is the largest position in my portfolio that I accumulated in Nov/Dec. You guys missed the run, maybe next time?

I think a lot of the space spacs got hit a little too hard. RKLB is my main play atm and it's already seen nearly a 50% runup after December tax loss harvesting. ASTR, the riskier launch company, has seen the same (tho no good options). Imo best to find these former spacs that have solid fundamentals as I believe the market over sold because spacs were 🌈 last year
