Those are interesting results. Perhaps it's from there not being enough data on the long term duration. I do agree that it would take several years of ownership for the savings in gas and maintenance to balance out the purchase cost. At least where I am, electricity is dirt cheap compared to gas, and my gas sedan could in theory last to 200k+ miles (at 110k currently), but there is a risk where the car would be totalled if a certain part failed (CVT in Nissan, oof). In many cases though, if efficiency in cost and mileage is the goal, one is probably best off getting a used Prius. Hard to beat for the value there, but it's also one of the most boring and soulless cars ever made.

It's great that you're so close to the point and went right by it. The romance vs. reality with EV's is greatly contrasted, they simply are not as ubiquitous of an answer as we once thought, and the lithium ion batteries are terrible for the environment. With the very clear signs of climate change, combined with us entering El Nino weather patterns, people are going to get serious about the environment, it is beginning to affect the wealthy, and they simply can not have that. Toyota is the only game in town that has been working on this consistently. You'll note a similar relationship with the quality of their CVT transmissions (which they pioneered) and their competitors. What will happen, is other large and established auto makers will do their best to make their own version, throwing resources at it until it works. LUCID is not going to be able to do this without completely changing platforms.

See, problem is people buying used cars. Barely able to afford the car. Then..... Maintenance issue happens. When Becky's Altima on bald ling longs, gernandes the CVT transmission, she ain't making her payment. Now Santander has to hire a re po guy. Get the car. Right now the default rate on sub prime customers is the highest it's been in 15 years. WSJ had an article couple weeks back. Lady buys 10 year old BMW for $20k. Engine goes. You think she's paying that loan?? See, it's the cost of insurance, gasoline, food, that's contributing to this mess. It's a macro economic event.

Honda needs to dump CVT transmissions. My '15 Civic has been great (currently at 105k miles, with only wear-and-tear repairs), but there's always a voice in the back of my head asking "how long is that CVT gonna last?" I'd rather have a good 6-speed stick or traditional auto. Their SUVs with CVTs are slow as dirt and that extra bulk will undoubtedly lead to decreased belt life in the transmission.

That's true of almost all of them. Dealers are a den of thieves. Not limited to electrics, aside from pickup trucks and muscle cars, Hyundai -Kia is running away from the competition. Detroit walked away from the mainstream car market. Chevy is still selling Malibus last resigned in 2016 - a lot of them - because people need cost-effective cars. But once past the false advertising for a cheap lease GM dealers want a very high payment. That's literally the only mainstream car GM makes - the only one and it's being starved. Ford is the same with the Fusion. Detroit's replacement SUV push? DOA. They're subpar across the board. Meanwhile GM is full of promises. GM is advertising amazingly unavailable next-gen EVs that aren't available. Care for a Bolt from 2016? GM promises that the upcoming next generation of ICE mainstream SUVs will be good finally. Sure it will. Meanwhile the Japanese price mainstream as luxury. Honda wants $30,000 for a base Accord with a CVT and 1.5 turbo. Detroit and the Japanese think mainstream buyers will pay up for less? Nope. Instead, they're looking elsewhere. Into the vast, abandoned mainstream consumer market walks Hyundai-Kia offering a full range of mainstream cars and SUVs for less money. To overcome their 1980s QC reputation, they offer a great warranty. What's this development got to do with EVs. All that revenue from all those ICE vehicles seems to have been reinvested into -beating SUVs that are actually on the market.

CVTs are hot garbage. Not only are they objectively worse than conventional automatic transmissions, when they fail, they fail hard and are more expensive to fix. Honda is all CVT. But hey, you get that 1-2 extra miles per gallon, so it's worth it.

Tesla will bankrupt legacy auto. We paid cash for our Model Y and plan to drive it for 20 years or when the battery dies. We hate car payments in general, my other car is a fully paid off 2015 honda accord still going strong. Shitty CVT transmission but hey it still runs fine, will drive it until it dies too. I hate dealerships, a Honda dealership in summer of 2020 lured me by lying about a 5k off promotion they had. I called and the car sales guy said he would honor it, got there and test drove and when we were talking price they would not honor it. Then he had the nerve to get his manager to come out and tell me that I was unreasonable to ask for 5k off, even though his sales guy lured me to come based on that deal alone. The manager literally told me that the Honda Pilots were selling themselves and dont need my business. I told him that we'll never buy from this dealership again as I've done in the past and this time buy a Tesla. Car sales guy told me, its a dream to be able to afford a Tesla Model Y, I told him you should have bigger dreams, mine is the roadster.

His thesis was, "because Zoom is using CVT's product, a product competing with their new conference product, that's because Zoom's product sucks and they need to use their competitors product as a base" or something like that. So, they did not buy out CVT, yet they were still using its product to get users to sign up for their Zoomtopia or whatever the fuck. My portfolio would be 1% greener today if you didnt do this shit. Vista holds a large majority, and the low float causes pumps like this. I am sure you are aware of it. The acquisition thesis is not really relevant, and most who bought because of this post will get rid of it soon, even before CVT gets hypothetically acquired. Anyways, I will add more if this low float stock pumps for few more days, as I both disagree with the acquisition thesis and the company valuation. You do not really need Cvent to organize "hybrid" events. It is not a necessity, and I am sure the retention will eventually dwindle.

Zoom is having a tough time competing with Teams. They tried adding voice, but it took a pandemic to wake them up, or someone got involved with brains. Acquiring CVT gives them in-person event, virtual and hybrid. Opens doors to sell zoom into enterprise, but CVT core I think is like 150-200 person events which offers solid cross sell oops for Zoom products. I think deal might make sense. What do you think happens if haggling goes away? If dealer discounts and manufacturer rebates goes away? Do your really think the MSRP sticker price will come down? No way. MSRP doesn't come down, it only goes up. So in your ideal world where there's no haggling, no dealer discounts, no dealers, no manufacturer rebates etc. and everyone pays msrp, you'll end up paying more. Much more. Just look at how much Tesla has increased prices in the past couple of years. My ideal world is how it was before the chip shortage when dealer lots were full of cars. When you could get $5,000 off the MSRP sticker price of a sedan or $12,000 off the MSRP sticker price of a truck. I'll give a personal example. Back in December 2019, I bought a brand new 2020 Chevrolet Spark LS CVT. The MSRP sticker price was $15,000 (including delivery fee, automatic transmission etc.) but I only paid $9,000. I received $6,000 worth of dealer discounts and manufacturer rebates. So fuck yeah I want haggling, dealer discounts, and manufacturer fucking rebates! You really think removing dealers will solve your problems? Again look at Tesla. Look at how much the price of a Model 3 has gone up in the past 3 years. The manufacturer can just choose to hike up the MSRP every year.

Mine’s got 36k on the clock. I did not become aware of the dumpster fire that is the JATCO CVT7 transmission until after I had signed on the line that is dotted. Knock on wood, no transmission problems yet. In fairness, back in 2017, the depreciation curve was so steep I signed on that line with the mindset I was buying a disposable car. At this point, my oldest kid just graduated high school. He’s going to community college in the fall, and job hunting, with the chicken-and-egg conundrum of needing a car, but not yet having the money for one. The way used car prices have shot to the moon, $2,000 used cars like he should be driving are now clapped out sh—boxes as old as he is. The 10 year old hoopties you could buy for $2,000 before COVID are now expensive enough a loan would be involved. My wife and I are now in a much better place, financially, than when we bought Spark. Since a loan would be involved to buy a car that wasn’t a crap-box, we threw my kid a bone, and bought my wife a new car. I get her old car as a hand-me-down, and my kid gets the Spark. I did have a “coming to Jesus” talk with my son, explaining that I don’t have a magical “clown car tree” in the back-yard, so this was a one shot deal. Under the circumstances, if the car makes it to 10 years, or 100k miles, I figure I’ll have gotten my money’s worth.

Even though I do not agree that SNAX is a good investment/trade, there is really no need for a personal attack. Market sentiment changes all the time, and it is really hard to assess which stocks will retain its values. An example is CVT, I bought PUT options as a trade because I thought with the pipe unlocking, it would go down. It however, went on a surge. Lesson is that nothing is for certain, and we just need to be careful when it comes to low volume, newly de-spaced companies.
