Something to consider, a sector ETF like SMH (semiconductors) is one way to get exposure to a hot area (aka be aggressive or accept higher risk) without putting all eggs in a single stock.

Mentions:#SMH

For me shit hitting the fan = NVDA drops back to a slightly more reasonable valuation and everyone panics and realizes the other chip companies aren't as profitable or growing as fast, they dump and SMH drops 15%, taking QQQ and SPY down with it

You are right SMH is a semi-conductor ETF. Best advice all day. I have told myself in the past to purchase positions in it , but I am still shooting my shot at NVDA. Guess I am frustrated that I missed that big sell off about 3 weeks ago when I had 6 puts. And sold them that morning because NVDA kept rising. I paid $55 a piece. There was a point where they were worth 7k a piece.

I was trying to figure out how much of my investments are really making a difference because I keep seeing these stocks with less than 1% (some as low as 0.01%) in the ETF positions. So, if I invested $100K each in FDVV, QQQM, SCHD, SMH, VOO, XLK that would be $600K total. There are 567 stocks in these ETFs that have less than $5000 (range is anywhere from $5000 to $10 in a stock) invested and these add up to $282K. To me thats $282K wasted. Hope this clarifies.

This is why the secret sauce to me is owning SMH or some other semiconductor ETF. Regardless of what happens in the space, regardless of what consumer bullshit the Apple/Microsoft/Tesla types sell, it all requires those companies to manufacture.

Mentions:#SMH

If you are a complete starter, I would advise first start with investing exclusively in one of the funds which follows one of the indexes. The most popular ones, ranked in terms of votality (from low to high), would be like: An all world ETF (such as VT) > US all market ETF (such as VTI) > S&P500 index ETF (such as VOO) > NASDAQ ETF (such as QQQ) > a sector ETF (such as SMH) VOO is like a middleground in between them and provides a good balance on risk vs reward, and the safest three (VT/VTI/VOO) will never be a bad choice unless something catastrophic happens to the US economy (hope I don't jinx this). A tech ETF such as QQQ or a sector ETF may provide higher reward with more risk. Long term wise it is a great investment still, but you must resist the urge of panic selling during downfalls, which can be a challenge for newcomers. After ETFs, you can try messing around with individual stocks, but I would suggest for new investors not dedicate more than 10% on them. One thing to note is that long term wise, nobody knows if a super powerful corp will still be as strong or grow even stronger after 30-40 years. Fantastic CEOs will step down or simply grow old, bad business decisions may happen from time to time, new tech or business trend will appear and disrupt or even replace today's largest businesses, etc. For now just stick to an index fund and you will be already better than most people on the Earth.

I’ve been standing at AMZN waiting for work for 10 minutes. The bozo next to me went to a manager asking when more work will be here and they said 5 minutes. The guy couldn’t handle getting paid to stand there and be on his phone SMH 🤦🏻‍♂️

Mentions:#AMZN#SMH

Seems redundant: You have VOO and VT which is almost the same thing, if we have a market meltdown both will tank hard. I would just go with one or the other. Then you have QQQM which already holds AAPL and NVDA but then you also have their individual stocks. Same goes for SMH which also has NVDA. Same for here, either hold the individual or the ETF. Rating: meh/10

>Plus, keep in mind. At some point upgrading might not be needed. Or tech doesn't need to improve and there isn't enough buying being done. Like how you only need to replace an appliance so often. You'd be surprised. I've worked in tech my whole life. Currently a dev for a fortune 50 company, worked in a datacenter ad a sysadmin years ago. Companies with big budgets upgrade on a 4-5 year lifecycle. The question there is how attached to CUDA/Nvidia architecture projects are going to become. As a dev, I very often have to change platforms, and on the DevOps side of things even more frequently. Non devs often underestimate how easy it is for a developer to learn a new platform and start iterating on it. I watched an entire data analysis org flip from Matlab to the Pandas library on Python because they got new leadership and they never missed a beat. And that's a whole new *language* Moving to new architecture will have a learning curve, but a short one, so any processor company that can figure out the next edge will have very little resistance getting buy in from tech companies. That said, I'm continuing to bet on Nvidia until I have a reason not to, and hedging long term by continuing to buy into SMH.

Mentions:#SMH

Nvidia makes GPUs and CPUs. There's much, much more to tech than processors. Also don't forget: Intel was the leader in the space for a very long time. After that, AMD. The industry benefits from having competition, as it drives pressure to develop architecture breakthroughs, which benefits computing as a whole, which benefits tech as a whole. For that reason I've been holding and adding to SMH in my retirement portfolios because I don't know who is going to do what when. But when they do I will have plenty of exposure to it.

Mentions:#AMD#SMH

There are thousands of people who went all in on FAANG stocks and outperformed the market significantly and consistently. There are thousands more who held VOO and just went overweight MSFT or NVDA or some other outperforming stock, and they've also outperformed the market consistently. If you picked, say, MOAT or VGT or VUG as your primary investment instead of VOO or VTI, you'd have outperformed the market consistently over time. Hell, if you just went 99% VOO, 1% SMH you'd outperform the market consistently over time. And if you did any of these things, you outperformed the market easily, without being a genius, without being "headhunted" by hedge funds, and without putting much effort into it at all. What does this tell you? It should tell you that it is a completely made up myth that retail investors can't outperform the market. You're emotionally invested in the boglehead myth that retail investors can't do this, despite all of the evidence showing that, in fact, they can.

MSFT QQQ if you want an ETF gives you top 100 in NASDAQ. VOO TOP 500 S&P. SAFE. Beats most funds long term. SMH Van Eck Semiconductor ETF. Top semiconductor companies. Usually between 20-30 companies. The returns for last :0 years are phenomenal. My kids are in their 20s. I’ve fold them to put as much into this as they can. It’s expensive and dome say overpriced. Thing is they have been saying that for a long time. They might be right on any given moment. But long term this keeps proving it’s a strong long term bet. I’d put 5 years in that category. Greater risk but greater reward. I bought a handful of semi conductor company stock individually. But they each have their ups and downs. SMH can have its own volatility, but the number of companies it purchases is a great balance, and helps to guard against extreme volatility.

So shop for smaller ETFs. Example: SMH has 20 stocks. Why worry about 80... *Ever?*

Mentions:#SMH

My understanding is that most of the “US based” companies in an s&p500 etf or index fund are globalized companies, so it’s hard not to invest internationally w/ the s&p500 and it makes it a safe diverse basic investment. I think a good basic spread would be a high yield dividend etf like SCHD, a growth etf like QQQ, a tech/AI etf like VGT or SMH, and finally any of the number of s&p500 etfs. The thing I have learned is to watch for redundant exposure to the same companies over different etfs.

SMH is a semiconductor ETF. Essentially, you are betting that the semiconductor industry will outperform the market as a whole. I wouldn't worry too much about it since it's a single share, though. In true boglehead spirit, most would say to sell and redistribute among your other ETFs.

HC had an easy layup to address illicit market concerns, public health, industry profitability, and environmental sustainability… instead they took the lazy way out. I’m pretty sad about this reco. “We believe Health Canada should maintain the current limit of 10 milligrams of THC per package in edible cannabis products and continue to develop the knowledge base in this area to determine whether there are conditions under which the limit could be raised without unduly impacting public health.” Increasing THC limits *per package* should have been a no brainer. Instead the legacy lobbyists were naively pushing to increase the potency per unit. SMH

Mentions:#THC#SMH

You probably should. But do so wisely. Understand the dynamics. ARKK for example is a very poor performing actively-managed fund. I’d recommend: BUG/IHAK for cybersecurity XSD/SMH/SOXX for semiconductors IHI for medical devices/medtech FTEC for broad tech obviously the QQQ is a good catch-all ICLN if you’re feelin lucky but I think it’s pretty risky, less so down here Just understand that there will be huge drawdowns in all of these. Also maybe don’t buy peak enthusiasm like now.

AVGO was up 5.64%, and while I'm not looking, it's probably a major part of SMH. Look, I know NVDA only had a regular good day and AMD was down, but semiconductors in general had a good day to be up over 2% (in US terms at least with using SMH) and are the only reason why the Nasdaq didn't turn red, because it really weakened.

How can VanEck Semiconductor UCITS ETF (SMH.L) LSE be up 5,67% today, when hardly any of its top holdings seems to be nearly as high today? Does this have to do with different exchanges/trading hours ?

Bitcoin is immutable Trustless Quick scarce Peer to peer Scalable And the block chain makes every transaction public knowledge. Think of it as a global wealth storage and distribution system. It solves the "Byzantine Generals Problem", the first ever currency or technology to do so. People will doubt this thing until it hits a million bucks, and by then it will already have started to be adopted globally and most of the potential gains will have been made. It is intellectually lazy to disregard something because you don't want to learn about it, or if you have pre conceived notioms about it, that might I add are likely false. I don't know why people are mad at bitcoin being brought up. Like I don't get it. It's a safety net against inflation and our governments debasing currency. It's freedom, and power returned to the people, yet most people just get mad and disregard everything. Talk about SMH...i just don't get it.

It would have been nice to start a few years ago, but the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) is fantastic. It’s averaged over 20 percent a year for over a decade. PE ratios still aren’t insane and if AI gets anywhere close to some of the predictions the need for semiconductors will skyrocket. It’s like selling shovels in California during the gold rush.

SMH is better if you want weekly options instead of monthly

I'll say it in words you will readily understand: Get your weight up 💪🏾💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏻💯 If anyone here thinks $350k pnl pre-tax is "life changing" money, SMH. I truly hope you never hit that level because you may not be ready for the soul crushing disappointment that IS the actual reality of that level of pnl and income in the USA. 🍒

Thats bullish for NVDA since SOXS is inverse and SMH is overweight on NVDA

If you are big on tech, consider actual tech ETFs (that include ASML and TSM) like XNTK and SMH; or those where you would still need ASML and TSM like XLK/IGM/IYW. If BRK means BRK.B, you might as well just get AAPL instead, but of course BRK.B is a solid conservative choice if you want a part of the portfolio that isn't as volatile.

I hate holding options overnight, let alone through a weekend. Ha! SMH is tempting, though. That trendline bounce could be in play Monday morning.

Managed to make some decent money from cash on the side that I yolo'd into the NVDA dip, rolled into next week, live to trade another week. Also holding some TSM and SMH. Got rid of CRWD for now, sadge.

I blindly followed that regard and loaded up on BB. Down two days in a row, and still falling. SMH
