Well, first thought that comes to mind is, you should not use a question as a title to write which ends up as purely rethorical, followed by what looks like the usual copy and paste of all the things that are wrong about bitcoin, wether they are true or not. Bitcoin is mostly the first succesful one. Your last paragraph is more concerning. Frequent hacked exchanges and stolen bitcoins ? I have two issues with this. First, in what world does that happen ? Because clearly that is not this earth. Second, how would that be bitcoin's fault ? The whole idea of crypto is to have no centralization. CEX, the centralized exchanges you are talking about, do not work onchain. If you are talking about FTX, the CEO himself had a backdoor to steal users funds. In any case, the only use of a CEX is for onramp/offramp. Never store tokens there, use a DEX. Final point, anonymity. Who said it was a blockchain strongpoint ? A blockchain is a public ledger; it stores all the transactions that ever happened, it cannot be altered, and it can be easily algorithmically searched. I know a guy who has both services. UW is good he says but he has BBS as well. BBS does better aggregation he says. I tried Tradytics, I just don’t have the time to mess with anything like that. It takes a certain amount of time invested to actually get anything out of any of those services. Centralized Exchanges (CEX) don't use the blockchain internally. This avoids the "gas" fees involved in sending cryptocurrencies from one wallet to the other and also avoids recording the information on the blockchain. When CEX move crypto from wallet to wallet they bundle huge amounts together and move hundreds of millions of dollars at once, since the fee for moving crypto currency is typically a base price whether you move $0.0001 worth or $100,000,000,000,000 all at once. For most cryptocurrencies gas for a transaction is a fraction of a penny or a couple pennies, for some cryptocurrencies (most prominently Ethereum) gas has been as high as $100 or more for a single transaction depending upon demand and scarcity. Instead of using a blockchain, CEX hold massive reserves that customers can draw their funds from similar to a bank and a teller. This type of transaction of sending crypto to coinbase, or pulling it off of coinbase utilizes the blockchain (interacting with the bank teller). But when you do business on their exchange (buy/sell/hold) the entire transaction is carried out in house and doesn't involve the blockchain. Coinbase holds custody of the BTC whether its balance is in my account or yours. This means coinbase generates no gas fee as its not using the blockchain for the transaction, and thus the transaction fee charged by coinbase is pure in house labor/profit. Its common for many users to leave their crypto in the CEXs custody. More advanced users hold their own cryptocurrencies in their own privately held wallets, different blockchains all have their own wallets. Ill drop a couple example scenarios that might illustrate it better than I explained it above: I have 10 bitcoin, I want to sell it but hold it in my own wallet (Wallet address rage14BTC1). I send the bitcoin to my coinbase account, to do this I initiate a transaction on the blockchain sending 10 bitcoin held in rage14BTC1 to CoinbaseBTCWallet, I pay a gas fee of 0.1 bitcoin (think of it like postage) for the transaction and it is thus recorded on the blockchain that wallet rage14BTC1 is now -10.1 btc (10 sent & 0.1 gas fee), and CoinbaseBTCWallet is now +10 btc. This is a completed transaction send + receive. However, its important to note that CoinbaseBTCWallet is not my coinbase account, its a master wallet that the coinbase corporation uses to hold some of their assets. What happens is they make a note on my account that I'm now credited with 10btc on my coinbase account, even though coinbase technically holds control of it (custody). Now I can list that 10btc for sale on the coinbase exchange for $185,000 for all 10 btc. It turns out you want to buy 10btc for $185,000 so coinbase processes our deal. You pay coinbase a 0.2% fee in $USD$ as well as $185,000, totaling $185,370, in return coinbase credits your internal account with 10 btc. Coinbase then removes my account credit on their internal system for the 10btc and replace it with $185,000 minus the 0.1% fee I paid them, so my account is now -10btc and +$184,815. Coinbase has profited $555 and technically nothing has happened on the blockchain. It's possible that both of us walk away at this point leaving the accounts to sit idle, mine with cash and yours with BTC. Nothing has happened on the blockchain since coinbase received the BTC from rage14btc1. You may then sell your 10btc to someone else on coinbase, maybe you list all 10 for $750,000 and it sells in august of 2024. And then that buyer sells all 10 for $350,000 in January of 2025 to a 4th party. Even though the 10btc changed hands among 4 different people/accounts on coinbase, it has not moved on the blockchain since I sent it to coinbase before I sold it to you. All the transactions have been carried out in house on coinbase, the CEX. The 4th person in our sales chain coincidentally sells all 10btc back to me for $1,240,000 in May of 2025 and then I initiate the transfer of the 10btc from coinbase to rage14btc1, my personal BTC wallet, that is the moment when the movement of 10 BTC is once again recorded on the blockchain and gas is paid. CEX are the most common entry point to change fiat like USD/Euro/RMB etc. into crypto currencies, but they hold custody of your asset like a broker with stocks, meaning the CEX owns your crypto as long as they hold onto it, and if they bankrupt you are more or less fucked, just like with a brokerage. More advanced users use DEX (Decentralized exchanges) which do not hold custody of your funds in the case of simple buy/sell exchanges. Advanced users tend to stay away from transactions that involve surrendering custody as much as possible. Hopefully that helps clear it up a little bit.

When you invest in COIN. You are not investing in crypto, but the sentiment of crypto. The stock does not reflect how well the crypto market is doing, it merely reflex the public sentiment/perception of the market. So it will probably hit ATH again, when the bull market comes back to crypto because that is all you can speculate on as an investor that can/wont/not willing to actually be involve in the space. This whole FTX disaster is the great decoupling of the crypto market to traditional market that everyone has been talking about. Not the decoupling everyone hope for but it decouple none the less. We just witness an unprecedanted massive bank run on all these CEX, if you check the onchain data. There has been a massive increase in self custody and a flight of capital to completely onchain DEX. If this continue until the next bull cycle in crypto (whenever that may be) we could see a general decline of usage with CEX. By next cycle we could be working with many fiat portal that offer direct on ramp to self custody wallet (see Apple's foray in to payment with USDC, Moonpay for credit card purchase directly into own wallet) The case for what happen with FTX just further strengthen the need for defi development. Every crypto native knows this, but this distinction is probably not clear to the general public. I think people outside this space that want to invest this space without directly touching it will continue to monitor the wrong stats (aka CEX usage). Institute that want to invest hold off until there is regulation that allow them to skip the middle man and go directly on chain. Perhaps the golden age of crypto speculation by people outside of the space is coming to an end.

Loopring is a Decentralized Exchange (DEX) with layer 2 eth capability. I'm sure there are others but I'm pretty excited to have the security of eth and cheap fees on L2. They use guardians for recovery, pretty interesting. True offramp is needed still. As long as Eth is alive my assets are safe. Without centralization and regulation you are the most important link to your own security though. The first to solve this could win the DEX battle.

This is a really good point. FTX.US was offering 8% yields up until everything blew up. It's not as absurd as 20%, but it's still incredibly high especially given the market as a whole. It was enough to lift an eyebrow from me and yet it wasn't enough to stop me completely from trying out their platform! I have about 4% of my portfolio in crypto and plan to DCA that up over time and am overall bullish and optimistic on blockchain, "defi," but I still see events like these as being an unfortunate but necessary evil in order for the crypto markets as a whole to mature. The average trader needs to be aware of the difference between a DEX and a CEX, and they need to understand how to protect themselves if the core value-prop of crypto -- "be your own bank" -- is ever actually going to pan out. Crypto.com CEO tweets out a screenshot of their holdings. Coinbase (my preferred CEX) sends an email infoming customers about their security measures. These are incredibly small steps that will hopefully lead to larger steps toward a mort trustful relationship between crtypto traders and crypto exchanges.

Well for starters NFTs are recorded on a blockchain. Which is the future of ownership. Lets ignore that part. GME specifically benefits from the % they receive for each sale made on their platform. When future games start to make skins, maps, dlc, ect on a blockchain. Its proof of ownership. Allows the holder full control over their digital product.
