I road VALU up to $90, before getting frustrated with management because they wouldn't even hold earnings calls. They owned +90% of shares, and did pay themselves a nice dividend on top.

Of course it was leverage, it always is. But saying that a negative beta stock can offset the risk fo a volatile market move is just wrong. LTCM had bond positions in different markets like argetinia, russia, the us, germany, uk and euity positions as well in those countries. The theory was that bonds and their arbitrage spread would narrow and that the correlation between the equities and bonds were not correlated. That was wrong. in the panic that was 1998 spreads widened and stocks dropped. The correlation was suddenly 1. One has to realize why it has negative beta and if there is something to it or if it just random noise. Stocks are all correlated to eachother. There must be a good reason for the market to not correct those negative beta stocks. (VALU has a negative beta, but still dropped on all the big market drawdowns).
