Vanguard has a hedge fund: Vanguard market neutral fund (VMNFX). Historical returns don't look great though.
The SEC includes stuff in the expense ratio that most reasonable people don't think should be included. For example Vanguard's Market Neutral fund incurs a lot of fees for borrowing and dividend expenses on short sales. Thus the expense ratio is quoted as 1.31%. However Vanguard only takes .2% out to cover fund expenses. Thus the "real" expense ratio, what people think of when they think of an expense ratio, is 20 basis points. BTW the ticker is VMNFX if you want to use this example to try and see the distinction.
VMNFX is a rlly cool vanguard fund considering it is one of the few long short funds available to individual investors. Though historically it has underperformed, in recent history it has done great due to market conditions.
