Need help with 401k - Why am I allowed to choose investments

So this is a really complicated way to build a simple portfolio. The percentages are all fine, but the only reason he has so many categories is to make it seem difficult to justify his commission. You could make a portfolio with 3-5 holdings that tracks almost exactly the same, and saves you a ton of fees. It’s pretty common for fees (expense ratio plus advisor fees) to come in around 1.5%. It might not seem like a lot, but assuming 6% returns, that’s 25% of our profit. 7.5% returns, it’s still 20% of our profit. You could just invest in VTI for your domestic stock, VXUS for your international stock, and a total bond fund like FXNAX (and FBIIX if you want international bonds). I’m not sure why he put you so heavily in municipal bonds - assuming these holdings are in a taxable account, so you could use something like FTABX to cover the municipal bonds. So set to round numbers (because all the tiny percentage differences essentially account for a rounding error and none of us really know what is going to perform the best for a given year), something like this. VTI - 50% VXUS - 25% FTABX - 15% FXNAX - 5% FBIIX - 5%

im definitely learning the 60/40 rule is probably not my friend at my age, so i was figuring 80/20 is probably a better choice. im thinking in might go with a 32% - FTIHX 48% - FXAIX 10% - FBIIX 10% - VXUS 15% - REIT (IRM). but im still trying to read about all this stuff, honestly i think thats why so few people actually invest or pay attention to thier retirements, theres just too much to have to learn and pay attention to

I am more or less split even on these: FTBFX - Fidelity Total bond FXNAX - Fidelity US Total Bond FIPDX - Fidelity Inflation-protected Bond FBIIX - Fidelity International bond fund PULS - Pgim Ultra Short Bond ETF USIG - iShares Broad USD Investment Grade Corporate Bond And slowly loading into: NATO or EUAD - European Defense Fund ETFs These are getting hot so it's a bit dangerous. I've been badly burned with sector funds before, but this one is a lock. It's a total lock, boss. 100% guarantee /s If the US stock market gives, everything across the board will go red everywhere, so I am very cautious with ANY equity until that happens.

If you want to stick with Fidelity funds, there are Fidelity U.S. Bond Index (FXNAX) and Fidelity International Bond Index (FBIIX)

It’s not hard at all to do everything. I’m pretty sure you can set up recurring contributions into the funds since they are mutual funds. At least that’s what I see everyone mentioning here. I don’t do recurring just because my circumstances are a bit different but it’s still easy. So I looked at it and it looks like FXNAX is just US bonds but FBIIX is both US and International. I think most target date funds have both so I’d probably use FBIIX personally, but I doubt the difference would be huge.

It’s extremely easy to open an account at Fidelity. Any IRA you open there would be eligible to invest in the zero fee funds. I’m not aware of a .35% fee that you reference. Fidelity doesn’t charge any fees except if you open a Fidelity Go account which is where a roboadvisor invests for you. Fidelity has a great sub that they actively monitor so it’s a great place for questions or to research things. I’ve sent them mod mail a couple times and got same day answers. And good catch about the bond fund. FBIIX is actually their international bond fund and would probably be a better core holding than just US bonds. The link below is Fidelity’s cheapest funds which I reference quite a bit. [Fidelity funds](https://www.fidelity.com/mutual-funds/investing-ideas/index-funds)

What's the expense ratio on FTIBX? I'm seeing 1.79% on a quick search. You could get a low-cost global bond fund through [BNDW](https://investor.vanguard.com/etf/profile/BNDW), with an expense ratio of 0.06%. With Fidelity funds you would have to invest in FXNAX + FBIIX.
