Yeah i actually really enjoy it, i get to travel all over, get put up in hotels for the majority of the year getting crazy points for marrriot/hilton/IHG etc, get a rental car with gas, per diem, and really good money. I don’t rent anywhere or have a mortgage, don’t own a car or have to pay insurance, and I basically live for free. I also work around 100 hours a week for like 10 months of the year, so I basically have no time to spend any money until I’m off. Then I just hit up SE Asia for a couple/few months and do it all over again. I wouldn’t trade it for a normal career

Yea, I saw that and that's my primary card. I'm fine with the increase because I get so much value out of it. Hell, you get most of that back nearly immediately. The $300 in travel credits is so broadly defined that I have that fully redeemed in the first month without actually having to travel. I save more than $800 a year today in the doordash subscription and credits. It makes doordash actually cost effective to use since 90% of the fees go away with the sub. Hell, with the monthly credits and deals that go along with it, sometimes it's actually CHEAPER for me to get food delivered than it is for me to go and pick it up! It's adding AppleTV/Music, which I'm actually excited about. I've been wanting to subscribe to AppleTV anyway and I want to check out Music to see if it's worth dropping spotify for. I spend well more than $75k/yr on my card so getting $500 in free flights and status along with automatic diamond status at IHG is amazing and the new $250 credit to 'chase shop' just sounds like "get $250 in free shit just because" Yes it's an expensive card, but it **more** than makes up for it.

You don’t have to repeat yourself. You’re using old data. I’m using fresh internal data reported straight from the mouth of our largest hotel operators, including IHG, and some of the largest flagholders in hospitality, paired with near identical results from major attractions. This data you are showing was publicly reported on in late February, and is data from weeks prior to that. That means 30 days give or take from the inauguration. At best, it is a very incomplete picture. My team is among the groups that gather, compile and report up this data. I don’t expect true numbers to be public for another month or two. But, by all means, keep sharing these links. They do point to the tip of the iceberg, even if the conclusion they are rushing towards is already being disproven in real time. The impact of this hasn’t even begun.

There's few companies anymore that offer shareholder benefits. LVMH does offer some. Intercontinental Hotels has a shareholder discount ("As a IHG shareholder am I entitled to discounts at IHG hotels? IHG offers discounted hotel stays (subject to availability) for ordinary shareholders who hold their shares in certified form, in their sole name, with the Companies Registrar. The IHG Shareholder Discount (the 'Discount') is available through a dedicated, controlled access website, details of which are provided in Company mailings direct to Shareholders, usually along with their Dividend Confirmation Statements.") There's not that many things that do and it becomes first, do I want to actually own the company?

Nothing illegal about shareholder "perks"...although most companies don't do it anymore. * **Berkshire Hathaway**: Shareholders receive discounts at several companies, as well as significant price reductions during the weekend of the shareholder meeting in Omaha on merchandise from various outlets. * **Carnival Cruise Lines**: Qualifying shareholders get a free credit of $50 when they sail six days or less in North America, $100 when they sail seven to 13 days, and $250 when they sail 14 days or longer.5 * **Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG)**: Through a dedicated, controlled-access website, registered shareholders of IHG can book hotel stays for discounted prices. * **Royal Caribbean Cruises**: At least 100 shares are required to qualify. The company awards a $50 onboard credit per stateroom for shareholders sailing for five nights or less, $100 for shareholders sailing six to 13 nights, and $250 for shareholders sailing 14 or more nights.7 ## A few notable companies that have discontinued perks: * **The Walt Disney Company**: Shareholder perks for Disney's stockholders used to be enrollment in the Magic Kingdom Club and discounts at all Disney resorts, stores, theme parks, attractions, and events. The company no longer offers any investor incentives. * **Churchill Downs**: Investors with 100 shares or more could participate in the Shareholder Pass Program for free general admission for two at all of the company's racing and off-track betting facilities.

I'm curious why top hotel chains such as Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and IHG don't have any (franchisee) presence in remote areas of Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. I do see that there are a couple of Best Westerns in West Yellowstone, though, but Best Westerns are quite bland. Are those areas not as profitable?

If you want to know about the hotel market why didn’t you just ask the resident hotel guy? As my flair indicates I own 40 uppermidscale hotels exactly like the ones he is talking about. All of my hotels are Marriott, Hilton, IHG and Hyatt located in 6 western states. Basically what he is saying is true. I’ll mention a few headwinds and tail winds. Positives - revenues continue to increase due to our ability to raise rates and the booming travel market - June was my highest single RevPar (revenue per available room) in company history. In my over 3000 rooms we ran 85% occupancy at a 145 dollar rate which is well above anything I have ever seen - new hotels are so expensive to build (I have two under construction) that a lot of places they don’t pencil out so the upcoming pipeline has been cut off and new supply will be muted over the next few years. Cons/headwinds - labor costs and other expenses are up big. So far the increase in rates has offset them but if we were to see a pullback and things slowed causing us to lose pricing power it would be really bad for margins - this is a high debt business. Nearly half a billion in debt just for a little guy like me. My debt has all been on 10 year terms and I still have a few years left before it all starts to need refinanced and I’m gonna pay 200bps over what I am paying now when it does. My average blended rate is currently in the 4s and in 24 months it will prob be 100bps higher - renovation costs are high. I used to do full Reno’s for 25k a door but now it’s closer to 40k. Anyway I think the OP is right. Not a quick play but I think if you have a few year outlook the hotel REITS are a great place to be. My pick in the space would prob INN. They are a solid group I’ve dealt with many times on acquisitions. Stock has been super beat up and trades at a discount in my opinion.

Some people didn’t believe that so one of the mods reached out and asked if I would be willing to prove it then people would stop asking. I don't stay at IHG's frequently, not 100% sure of their prices. Usually, Marriott or Hilton are my go-to. For 1 night at an IHG, yes that might be a little high. But at a Marriott, Hilton, Four Seasons, etc. $670 per night isn't unusual. That's not even close to the best room in the hotel. Especially if at a downtown location in mid - large city.

Interestingly, Kimpton is scaled differently in the US to the rest of the world. It was acquired as a more upscale brand but as IHG have signed new deals around the world they’ve scaled it as luxury. I’m from the UK and the two in England are very nice. You’re right, IHG really need to break the luxury market in N Amer. If they can revitalise Regent, open some of their Six Senses pipeline, and introduce Vignette (their luxury conversion brand) there then it’s possible, but Marriott and Hilton are so strong in that market. The rebranding to IHG Hotels and Resorts should help put the master brand out there more because most people don’t know IHG and who can blame them, they sound like an investment banking firm.

Yes you are 100% correct my friend. My experience with IHG brand is strictly North America. Canada & USA. I have heard from others aswell that the IHG properties are far nicer overseas than what they offer in N.A. But I have no experience with it myself. Outside of North America it sounds almost like a different brand entirely. Maybe next time I travel across the water I'll give one a try. There's nothing wrong with budget friendly hotels, or someone choosing to stay at one. Just that my preference would be the more upscale option, if it's there. That will be interesting to see. If they can compete with Marriotts program and add some luxury options to their North American brands then they could really dominate the industry over here. For most people I know that travel for business in North America, IHG is their last option.

Mentions:#IHG

IHG is very midscale heavy in the US. They have a higher weighting of luxury, particularly of their newer brands, in the rest of the world. That’s why you know them as budget friendly. They’ve recently rebranded and have a huge focus on luxury and lifestyle brands, with big attention on voco, Vignette and Six Senses. You’re right that IHG dominate in the budget friendly area. Holiday Inn Express is the big earner for them, but they’re catching up in other scales. They have also just rebranded their loyalty scheme and the last I saw public opinion was that it will challenge Marriott and Hilton.

You are correct. When I travel business. I don't check prices. I just book. If IHG has a hotel with presidential suite or niche "boutique hotel" that I can book and save a few hundred to a thousand $ for owning 1 measly IHG share. Of course I'll go there. In the USA, IHG is great. They're everywhere and sometimes the only option in smaller towns. Globally, meh. Not the best option or hotel chain. Marriott properties are typically nicer with more amenities, and a better loyalty program Basically, if the product (hotel/room) is better than what nearest Marriot/Hilton offers. I'll take up IHG and go there, save 15%. Not a big deal. If it's just a standard room/nothing special at the IHG. Then you can find me at the nearest Marriott. Not worth it.

Mentions:#IHG
r/stocksSee Comment

That assumes that the contribution margin from shareholders who are travelers choosing to stay at IHG (because of this discount) over a Marriott is greater than the loss in contribution margin by offering 15% off to all shareholders who likely would still stay at IHG without the 15% discount. I’ve never talked to someone who does business travel who closely looks at whether they spend $100 or $125 per night (numbers were pulled out of thin air and rounded to quarter for my mental health) to dictate where they stay. It’s predominantly loyalty based. My guess (lacks hard data) is that this benefit isn’t widely used by IHG. There’s a reason the biggest hotel brands in the world don’t do something similar. It’s unlikely this helps the bottom line. If I can go buy a share of IHG and then start getting 15% off all stays then that’s an arbitrage opportunity.

The next 6 months are going to be the best months to get a Credit Card for a Major hotel chain. They're already pretty great like you can get yearly free nights, but they go absolutely insane during Recessions because hotel rooms cost almost the exact same whether they are full or empty. So you get a sorts of credits to get you to stick with one chain. Like right now you can get an IHG, Hyatt, Marriott, and Hilton card that gives you high status plus high rewards points and one free night at a 200-300$ a night hotel. For only a 100$ a year. Really no downsides unless you have a credit card addiction or you literally never leave your house for any reason. This shits only going to get better.

These guys are not going to revolutionize the hospitality industry. They're in a few major cities total. Seriously like 20. Globally. I've been following them for 4-5 years from when they were tiny-er. I wanted to believe in them but their progress, or lack thereof disappointed me heavily. The problem is they have a long ramp and high capital cost; mostly full building acquisitions in expensive, downtown areas of major cities. Great in normal times for the business traveler who doesn't want a shitty hotel, but still overall small impact in the industry. Their model doesn't scale. Pretty god awful when all business travel and those expense accounts dry up. Business travel will lurch and stumble back to life in the next year but Sonder is such a drop in the goddamn ocean it's incredible. They are a great speculateive acquisition buy. One of the stupid, uncreative hotel companies will buy them. I'd guess IHG or Hilton as they have no creativity of their own. Buy Vacasa (TPGS) instead. They have crushed it the last few years and are now the largest vacation rental management company and partner at the hip with AirBnB. Vacasa is the future of vacation stays, and regardless of whether there is never another corporate business conference that is attended, humans will always want to vacation.

Discounted room rates. The amount of discount depends on room type and availability. The biggest discount I have seen when looking for rooms was the Intercontinental in Kansas City. The presidential suite was $1,100 a night checking through the IHG app it was $2,500. Way more then I would ever spend but it was greater than 50% off. Now if I had some friend that where willing to split the bill that would be a different story. The worst discount I ever saw was at a Candlewood Suites in Houston Texas for $25 off a 2 week stay. Not really a discount but the stay was not that much either. I only use the discount when traveling with my wife and kids. Otherwise my company can foot the bill so I can rack up the points.

AI driving is more of the problem. Hotels are expensive to run and margins are like 5%. What you're going to see is people just sitting in their cars and going straight to the destination cities. Now, a lot of hotels are actually highway locations on the outskirts of destination cities. Those hotels will fall and failing hotels brings the brand down. Watch all the big brands like IHG. They're all releasing new brands. IHG has Avid coming out that they've been trying to squeeze into new builds. Hilton is coming out with their Tru line, Choice has Ascend. Why are they diluting their brands like Holiday Inn or Comfort Inn that already has tons of recognition? Because those brands *could* be in jeopardy of hotels along the highway start failing because people don't feel the need to stop. The hotel industry probably won't fail, but it'll be pushed to destination cities and the big brands are already preparing for that possibility when they have to abandon their Holiday Inn linr.

Re: business travel It's the curse of micromanagement. The larger a corporation gets, the more micromanagers float to the top. They don't have the time to travel, so they farm it out to their VPs, directors, and regionals. COVID cost a lot of companies a lot of money (Amazon comes to mind, wonder what the price tag was for their in house weekly testing for a million employees) and there are a lot of changes they'll need to implement to return to "normal" and balance those costs in 2021. Changes which come with more audits which mean more travel. Business travel for face to face with your subordinates is also "tradition" or whatever they've started calling it since the latest version of LEAN; they've been doing it for the entirety of their 20-40 year careers and one year of zoom calls won't break that habit so easily. You also have professional sectors with their own conferences at about every level you can think of, plus certifications that allow you to satisfy continuing education requirements by attending/speaking at conferences. Academic segments made good headway at making this adaptation. I participated in the Archaeogaming conference last August, which was literally hundreds of anthropologists on a discord server discussing their research while taking turns streaming games. But nearly no other portions of the professional conference market were able to adapt so well--yes, they had their zoom conferences, but do you really think that'll stick in comparison to cracking a cold one with the boys with a lanyard hanging around your neck? As a side note, I'll add that the Archaeogaming conference did have an additional, important catalyst in the dozens of sexual assault cases that brought down multiple long-standing conferences and institutions in the anthropology segment between 2019 and 2020. The racism and sexism of the old guard has alienated anyone under 40 and it drove some big change. As another example, the Massachusetts Archaeological Society lost half its membership back in 2019 after the president of the museum they're based out of made some revealing remarks involving extremely dated, racist terms for Native Americans, and faced no accountability. The dichotomy between the older academics entrenched in that mindset, and the younger academics who won't stand for it, drove that change and did so quickly. But business management, as much as it likes to pretend it's an academic pursuit and is trying to be progressive, is not; it's a cult of conservatism (as in conservation of tradition, not political conservatism, though there is overlap). It's why we have an economy propped up by bullshit jobs (if you haven't read the book Bullshit Jobs, I recommend it. Fantastic study by a well respected anthropologist) and it's why nobody has enough fingers and toes to count the toxic leaders they've worked with/for. As soon as they can return to business travel, they will. Some have already started, and some others never stopped. I'll pause and take a knee here to drink some water and say, dear reader, that if you're a business leader and you were offended by that last paragraph, congratulations that paragraph was about you. It's not all business leaders, but it is the overwhelming majority of those who are successful. It's not a judgment, just a statement of fact. I have a strong feeling that while leisure travel won't come back right away, business and professional travel will. Business travel will come fastest, and professional will follow, with leisure bringing up the rear. If I had to pick one stock for this, I'd invest in IHG since they host a lot of the smaller regional conferences that will come back before the national and international ones, which will take longer to coordinate due to sheer size. That's just my gut feeling based on what I've summed up here. I could write a book on this and very nearly have; my college thesis was 300 pages on government mismanagement of the Cold War and how it led to rapid technological advances at the cost of massive waste and the explosion of toxic leadership. Studying history will rarely give us solutions to modern issues, but it will inform us of what questions to ask and what trends will repeat. Business travel is a repetitive trend and will absolutely come back. I've searched my feelings and I know it to be true.
