Spain (EWP) Has been run by a competent government recently. Actual population growth in Europe!! Japan (BBJP) General Sell America pickup. Did well enough to keep for diversification purposes. I might sell soon. We'll see if the new LDP leader is a steady hand or starts going wild. Mexico (FLMX) Capable new president. Somehow managing to hold off Trump crisis AND expand trade with everywhere other than the USA at the same time. ASEA (ASEA) General Sell America pickup + part of the Asia-Pac world economic hub. And the biggest part of my portfolio is Korea: EWY. 46% Samsung & SK Hynix and... some other stuff.... Picked it up last year post-coup because of the post-coup dip. Then things got really wild. Its a bit more complicated than that; the "LDP" is very much a (shifting) coalition of multiple parties. And the last time the Democratic Party got into power, they put a guy who proudly referred to himself as a space alien in as PM, who promptly tanked the economy and pissed off allies (namely the US). SiCarrier Founded: 2021 Affiliation: Wholly owned by the Shenzhen Major Industrial Investment Group. Focus: Aims to develop competitive lithography systems. Progress: Has made significant advancements but still lacks fully operational EUV systems. Vision: To achieve self-sufficiency in semiconductor manufacturing and compete globally. Huawei Project: Developing a domestic EUV tool using laser-induced discharge plasma (LDP) technology. Status: Currently testing a prototype, with plans for mass production by 2026. Potential Impact: If successful, this could challenge ASML's monopoly in advanced lithography.

not trying to be all *well akshually* but the gov protects the rice industry largely due to its political importance, not food security. rice consumption has declined for decades while bread consumption has increased, and rice remains heavily subsidized and shielded by import restrictions. the agri sector, especially rice, has long been a key support base for the ruling LDP so upsetting it risks destabilizing the party’s postwar political dominance.

Mentions:#LDP

Here’s the thing: Japan has a history of being fucked over on these trade agreements. We can go all the way back to 1985 with the Plaza Accord which basically helped walk Japan into a recession in the 90s. Now 🥭 wants them to basically give up their domestic rice production so they can buy more American rice (which Japanese people don’t even like anyway) and also I guess give up their domestic auto industry too. The only reason Japan is growing some balls here is because there are elections in July and we have already seen how anti-🥭 sentiment has played out in other countries when it comes to elections. The LDP in Japan have basically ruled almost continuously for 70 years. And they’re at risk of losing everything in July.

The main reason is to have a foothold against China, and potential Russian aggression in the region. You're vastly overstating the influence that the US military has over Korean and Japanese politics in the modern era. Yes, the US helped LDP stay in power, but we're talking about decades ago. Similarly, the US kept Park in power, but that was in the 70s.

Mentions:#LDP
r/stocksSee Comment

I didn't say the U.S. is benevolent. In fact, it's the opposite. Having military and intelligence presence in Japan and Korea gives them the power to influence and potentially change the domestic politics of these countries. Just look into how the LDP originated and how it gained so much power in Japan (spoiler: the CIA installed puppets and eliminated popular opposition leaders). America has a history of individually threatening and blackmailing foreign leaders. In Japan and Korea, this is even more effective due to the military presence. I predict East Asia and Southeast Asia will become the next Middle East.

Mentions:#LDP#CIA
r/stocksSee Comment

U.S. doesn't have to outright use its military force. It has a massive presence in Japan, and it can secretly carry out political assassinations and install puppets. (The whole reason the LDP has been in power for so long is because it was backed by the CIA, which carried out extrajudicial killings of popular opposition leaders.) So, individually threatening leaders to get their way is pretty much what they'll do. Any political leader who truly has their country's best interests at heart wouldn't sign these stupid deals with Trump. So blackmail and threats will work—just like they did recently with El Salvador. I predict East Asia and Southeast Asia will eventually turn into the next Middle East.

The tool is unlikely to be made for lithography. Its properties seem to be made for optical alignment and mask inspection given laser induced discharge plasma (LDP) intrinsic limitations and it’s near identical similarities to the technology incorporated by USHIO technology who have used LDP technology for mask inspection alignment and beam-line applications for close to ten years. [https://www.euvlitho.com/2020/S23.pdf](https://www.euvlitho.com/2020/S23.pdf) [https://wccftech.com/ushios-breakthrough-in-the-niche-extreme-ultraviolet-lithography-market/](https://wccftech.com/ushios-breakthrough-in-the-niche-extreme-ultraviolet-lithography-market/) It’s important to note that laser induced discharge plasma (LDP) light source was researched seventeen years ago by ASML and Xtreme it failed to compare to Laser-Produced Plasma (LPP) technology given its worst levels of debris, lower power conversion and in particular plasma stability and uniformity. [https://www.ushio.co.jp/en/news/1002/2011-2011/101316.html](https://www.ushio.co.jp/en/news/1002/2011-2011/101316.html) Even if they develop a fully integrated prototype it will still at-least a decade to turn it into a machine that is economic competitive to multi patterning DUV. For instance ASML released the alpha functional EUV machine in 2004-2006 that actually used a plasma discharge EUV light source. It still took fifteen years of development to turn it into a machine capable of manufacturing at a high-volume scale ASML 3400c [https://www.asml.com/en/news/press-releases/2006/asml-has-shipped-the-industry-first-euv-tools](https://www.asml.com/en/news/press-releases/2006/asml-has-shipped-the-industry-first-euv-tools)

The TSE website said there was one company with 1,000 share units as of 2018. Japan's pension system is clearly bankrupt and reform is essential. However, populist policies toward the elderly are rampant in Japan due to low voter turnout among young people. An estimate was made once that the average senior citizen would need approximately $30,000 to live on in retirement (it will be $150,000 by my time!).The LDP got away with it by rubbing it out. Excessive self-help is intended to stimulate investment, but this will ultimately lead to widening inequality. The world's most successful communist country is now about to meet the same end as many of its compatriots.

Is it about Japan? It is a little complicated and I recommend that you look it up yourself, but I will explain it to you. Sorry if I mislead you about the names of the political parties, as they are complicated in English. The current ruling party is the Liberal Democratic Party, which can be thought of as aiming to deregulate real estate. For example, it aims to have banks act as intermediaries for real estate investment, deregulate commercial property, and promote real estate investment by foreigners. However, the LDP is the minority ruling party in the Diet, and the opposition parties, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and the People's Democratic Party of Japan, are aiming to strengthen taxes on the wealthy and curb the real estate bubble caused by tower condominium investments, so overall, the trend is toward tighter regulations.  In addition, the Bank of Japan's interest rate hike is likely to deal a strong blow to those who have been taking out variable-rate mortgages, which is a headwind for the real estate industry.

Japan for literal decades was attempting to induce inflation because Japanese people are safe-minded savers who clenched their money with a tight fist post-1991 bubble popping. The LDP for years and years was actually trying to get the yen to 140 per dollar when it was stuck forever between 90-100, which is why Japan's interest rates are rock bottom. Combine that with a shrinking population and you have some of the cheapest mortgages on earth. Japan is in a position like almost no other country to actually benefit from the inflation that is happening everywhere right now. You'll see record adjusted revenues from Japanese companies in the following years thanks to this. tl;dr: Long Sony and other Japanese exporters, Long Japanese banks

Hey, sorry I took so long to respond but I thought I'd still share some more information in case you're interested. The shooter, Tetsuya Yamagami, went out to assassinate the Unification Church's leader Hak Ja Han Moon (the former wife of the Church's founder, Reverend Sun Myung Moon) but she was a no show. Yamagami's disappointment however, was offset by a 'happy' coincidence. The former PM, Shinzo Abe, happened to be giving a public speech on the street in front of the train station. So, he was a target of opportunity. Abe's grandfather helped the South Korean Unification Church spread into Japan as a conservative counterweight to Soviet-sponsored communist groups and many of his party members have enjoyed favourable relations with them as Abe's Liberal Democrat Party (LDP) overlooked the cult-like practices of the Unification Church. In return, the Church helped to mobilise volunteers and voters by campaigning on some of the same issues as the LDP; namely, family values and fears over population demographics. Groups associated with the Church often require a written policy pledge before offering endorsement of politicians. Abe himself wasn't actually a member of the Unification Church but had sent a congratulatory video message to a Church affiliate in 2021. In the video, Abe praised the Church for its commitment to traditional family values but that pretty much something up his 'personal' connection to the group. Some opposition MPs also received campaign assistance from the Church's volunteers. The shooter claims his mother donated a lot of money to the church and this ruined his life. The Unification Church found fertile ground in Japan; praying upon the national guilt over warcrimes committed by Japanese forces in Korea during World War 2 and offering a path to 'salvation'. It has a habit of accepting large donations from its supporters; a practice that has left many people poor.

To learn more about Abe He was a Japanese Neoconservative. Don't think of this using Western liberal and conservative labels. The neocons are socially conservative, pro-classical economics, technocratic, pro-democracy, pro-government, anti-immigrant, and wary of China. In terms of foreign policy, they desire to reassert Japanese influence over the Asia Pacific through stronger international alliances, expansion of Japanese corporate interests, expansion of the military. They've gotten more anti-China over the years in response to the CCP's own anti-Japanese rhetoric - you can see this in action in the 2021 white paper over the defence of Taiwan, which expanded their concept of self defense to include a Chinese attack on Taiwan as being an existential threat to Japan. This has materialised in the form of missile installations on Ishigaki Island, just 300km off the eastern flank of Taiwan. Generally speaking, the Neocons embody the prevailing attitude of status quo and adequately represent the average Japanese voter. They're the largest faction within the LDP, who have consistently won almost every election. Not because of flawed democratic processes - their democratic institutions are rated 96/100 by Freedom House, on par with Western/Central/Northern Europe - but because they have the mandate of the people. The more extreme side of the Neocons have some WW2 war crime denial, but the majority acknowledge the crimes but don't embrace their culpability to the extent that say, Germany does. Abe himself was on the more extreme end - he expressed war crime denial as a personal opinion and was accused of insincerity and whitewashing in some of his state apologies. After Abe stepped down from representing Japan on the international stage, he still remained a powerful force in Japanese politics. He was the leader of Seiwa even after his retirement and was a mentor to both Suga and Kishida, the next two prime ministers after him. After leaving office, he went a bit 'mask off' and became one of the most vocal supporters of Taiwan and warned constantly of the threat of the CCP. Some theorise that it was a political move to allow for an unbound anti-China voice in Japanese politics - Abe would be expressing his personal opinion, not the view of the state. Regardless, he was the longest serving prime minister of Japan and generally regarded positively because of the fact he pursued the status quo. I hesitate to use another Germany comparison, but I would probably compare him to Angela Merkel in terms of political prominence/tenure, and the way he had to dance around an economically important but borderline hostile neighbouring power.
