Crypto has become the second stock market, the same rules apply. I've invested in both (but really new to crypto). So-called "shitcoins" are like the pharma-biotech stocks...risky as hell...but can offer good returns. In my stock investing, I have done really well by planning long-term, one to three years out. Short term, buying into the hype, not so well. "Buy the rumor sell the news" is a thing because the big players pump stuff up, and sell off pretty quick. EVERYTIME, I invested in a pharma I lost money, pre-covid. After covid...I was so gun shy I didn't invest in any pharma, but I made a bundle off of covid hit industries, that I knew would recover. CZR, ALK, and the like. With crypto, I am trying to apply the same lessons I learned from the stock market. Keep my "shitcoin" investments to a minimum. Stake whatever you can. Look a little long-term. I currently like Etherum based platforms/coins...not really sure what to call them. I think they show promise. But honestly, I have no clue...I read articles daily about crypto and it is like a different language to me. So my investments are minimal. Bottom line, you are absolutely correct, if you do not understand the tech/business, etc and are buying because of news or company releases, be prepared to be disappointed.
