I had to use chat to inform me to how they calculate this and what “chained dollars” means: Real GDP, or Real Gross Domestic Product, is a macroeconomic measure of the value of economic output adjusted for price changes (i.e., inflation or deflation). This adjustment transforms the money-value measure, nominal GDP, into an index for quantity comparison. It allows comparison of the quantities of goods and services produced from one year to another, adjusted for changes in price. The Federal Reserve, like other institutions and analysts, uses Real GDP figures primarily sourced from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) in the United States. These figures help in assessing the health and growth rate of the economy, independent of changes in the price level. "Chained dollars" is a method used to calculate Real GDP, officially called "chained-dollar estimate," introduced to provide a more accurate account of economic growth over time. This approach adjusts the GDP numbers for inflation in each year of the series relative to the prices of a base year, which keeps evolving. Since 2017, this method has used 2012 as the reference base year. The chained-dollar method uses current and preceding year prices to make these adjustments, improving accuracy by addressing issues of changing price levels and consumption patterns more dynamically than traditional fixed-base year calculations.
