I had to fact check you. First exchange was NLS in October 2009. I also recall people talking about it being slightly above market value. Sadly I can't find the original thread on Bitcointalk.org

Bitcoin exchanges have existed since 2009: > The first known Bitcoin price, or exchange rate, recorded on 5 October 2009 was published on what was the world’s first Bitcoin exchange site, New Liberty Standard (NLS), a site which offered a service to buy and sell Bitcoins in exchange for US dollars using PayPal. The site was operated by “NewLibertyStandard”, who was a frequent contributor to the early Bitcoin forum Bitcointalk.org... > The very first Bitcoin / USD exchange rate published on the New Liberty Standard site on 5 on October 2009 was USD $1.00 = 1,309.03 BTC, which equated to an incredible $0.00764 per Bitcoin, or in other words 7.6 US cents per 100 Bitcoins. The transaction funding NLS, was from Sirius for 5500 BTC, follow that and the other address likely used by NLS, looks like a bunch of loops. Like something sold and taken back shortly there after. I discovered NLS in its very infancy, there my sound money research leading up to the GFC. I have nothing to show for 1000+ bitcoin for a dollar, but have done much searching to see what others experienced in the pre- pizza, pre- Mt Gox. days. Did they lose their faith by the inherent vulnerabilities' with early bitcoin storage? as it appears the original wave of bitcoiners is not heard from only those from subsequent waves.

New Liberty Standard was one of the first bitcoin exchanges, operating from 2009-2011. It allowed buying bitcoin through PayPal and sent purchased bitcoin to buyers via email or forum messaging. As bitcoin was very new then, storage options were limited. Some likely just kept the bitcoin in the original wallet files sent by NLS. Many early adopters likely lost bitcoin due to lack of secure storage options, forgotten wallets, discarded drives, etc. Specific details on NLS storage guidance are unclear. But the early days of bitcoin saw more basic security than today, leading to easier loss of wallets and keys. Learning from this early history emphasizes the need for proper crypto storage and security to prevent loss.
