The Ivy League investors don't know everything, they can't, there are only so many of them and they only have so much time. They are also, and this is the big thing, they are not that smart really, like they aren't superhuman, these are perfectly fallible people. They have risk managers telling them to structure their portfolio in a certain way, they have managers around them that they don't want to look stupid in front of and they need very good reasons to push back on them. Some of these institutional investors are almost on autopilot, trading within very strict boundaries and guidelines. Retail doesn't have any of that, and they can have an edge if they know enough but most people underestimate the level of research and due diligence that is required. Like, I know someone who works as an analyst for a company that sells soda streams, distributes soft drinks to hospitality businesses and bottles and manufactures other soft drinks. He has made a killing specifically on the stocks of hospitality and soft drinks companies.  He just knows more about specific niches of that industry than perhaps anyone else in the country. No institutional investment company would ever take him on, he didn't go to the right schools and has the complete wrong CV for it, but they are not beating him on trading in that sector.
