What happens to gold stocks after we find gold missing after the Fort Knox audit? Calls on USGO?
I use FDLXX at Fidelity. It’s a Treasury Only Money market, and 90%+ of dividends were state tax exempt in 2022. 2023 figures aren’t available yet. It has a higher expense ratio than VUSXX but I like the advantages of holding a Fidelity MM fund at Fidelity. Also, the percentage of distributions that was USGO is probably still the ceiling for the state tax exemption. However, some states have rules that reduce it to zero sometimes.
Yeah. I believe CA, CT, and NY require a fund to ha e at least 50% of holdings at each quarter end to be in US Government obligations to be eligible for any state tax exemption. The Vanguard USGO document should indicate if a fund met the requirement for that year. For example, a fund holding 90% Berkshire Hathaway (that doesn’t distribute dividends) and 10% Treasury bills might have close to 100% of its distributions as government obligations, but the distributions would not be state tax exempt in those states. More concretely, I think VUSXX was only about 60% USGO as of June 30, 2023. If it had fallen below 50% on that date, it would have lost its state tax exemption completely in those states.
