I own some shares in BJ’s. I have a feeling Costco will buy them out or possibly Walmart. Sam’s is Walmart and Costco has been spanking their ass. Costco members are loyal. Couple years ago Sam’s closed down all their Alaska stores (how you not make money in Alaska is fucking beyond me). Costco moved right in their old locations while maintaining their existing locations and are killing it. Anchorage, AK literally has 2 Costco’s, Business Costco and a Costco Showroom with a population of ~400,000. Given, Anchorage is a primary hub for all surrounding communities.

I have some young relatives who work there, one in middle management and one who is frontline worker and they say they are utterly ruthless with payroll in the stores. Something takes 5 people to do? They allocate 3 and then pull 2 people to work on something else. It's constantly putting out fires and it "works" because expectations are so low. Stores can get away with poor and slow service because they know that customers have nowhere else to go. I feel bad for the young people who work there because they get thrown into the work with minimal training and the staffing is so sparse they don't have an opportunity to receive mentorship. When I was young and had a retail job I was blessed to have the opportunity to work with some mature people who were able to teach me a lot of stuff not just work specific stuff but things like how to be responsible, be operationally sound in general, and how to handle dealing with people and that stuff really laid the foundation for me and has served me well. Another reason they're doing well is that they aren't as competitive on price as they used to be. Costco, BJ's Wholesale Club, Lidl, and Aldi have recently been shown to be significantly cheaper but I reckon that A) Walmarts are a lot more numerous and B) There's a psychological association of cheap prices with Walmart so people don't even bother checking.

You cannot, YET. It's only a matter of time before they can program robots to replace all the work humans can do, and combining it with AI for the critical thinking part (or close enough that people won't care to dispute the result). For example, my local BJ's wholesale already has a robot that drives around and orders all the stock for the entire store. BJ's can now cut their management staff PER STORE and hire a single repairman for an entire region. Even if you go conservative and say a technician can cover maybe 3 stores, that's still a net loss of 2 jobs. A rudimentary example but that idea scales. Name a human task you believe cannot be accomplished by an AI and I bet for more than half we can break it down into simple enough individual tasks that you could program robots to do it. Typically when we automated specific jobs out, people reskilled into more complex labor or knowledge based (ex software development). Now those knowledge based jobs are being threatened. Even if you can't 100% replace all knowledge based jobs, if innovation is able to make them efficient enough to reduce the number needed faster than re-skilling or a declining birth rate can happen, you get unemployment.

You don't understand how the stock market works apparently. You're stuck on the "List stocks by P/E" narrative when that's not how stocks work in today's economy. Costco's P/E is high, yes. It's been high, in the traditional industry sense, for many years now. Yet, people keep buying. Why? Because it's not treated as your traditional retail company. What's the risk of Costco stock dropping? Low. Why? Because their membership numbers dictate the story. People are signing up in record numbers with near record highs in membership retention. What does that tell you? That they continue growing in a very predictable and consistent manner. I never said it wasn't expensive in a traditional sense. A stock could be expensive but you can still make money off of it. Is your measure of a stock being expensive based on P/E? Please explain to me, do you think the largest investors of Costco don't know what you know that the P/E is too high, EPS is too low, etc., for the price Costco is at right now? That takes ten seconds of research to look up. The nuance with Costco stock is simple as fuck: It's seen as a defensive stock with consistent business growth, expanding warehouse stores, a tough barrier-to-entry, strong business model, strong employee retention, strong membership retention (consistent profit), and more profitable every year. Name me a company like that right now that operates in the consumer staples industry.. Their EPS doubled in five years, BTW. Walmart can't sniff that, TGT can't sniff that. I also own BJ's stock as well.
