Good question. Maybe ones that hold tons of bagholders that will never get their money back. One example is COCP, they have no means of income and are about to get dropped from Nasdaq. The new one is AVYA, its being pumped by its owner but it went from $22 to .60 cents in less than 1 year.

COCP chart looking primed to run, especially with positive news coming out yesterday that the share price didn't really respond much to. In for an overnight position.
Basically some companies are getting pumped either the week/day of an offering which dilutes (adds) shares and makes your shares worth less. Then after said pump, the market will short the thing to the ground. Check out COCP for an example. Ran to $2-3 and then the offering shot it down to the 1.10s. It can be a momentum play but when something smells fishy, it’s best to get out same day.

The market is highly volatile right now. Any stock can go down without warning. For example, people were jumping into COCP. Then a couple hours after the market closed, there was an offering. It dropped 25% in after hours and another 10% the next day. Stocks are not stable.

Yeah, chasing can do that to your account. My advice is to learn about support/resistance levels and to try practicing trades where you buy *as* a stock is taking a dive. I'm not even kidding. This is why 90%+ traders actually don't do well - because they chase green instead of red. Like for COCP today I literally bought shares as *soon* as I saw that after hours dive and made 3% and just sold in like 5 minutes. Buy in the middle of people's fears and despairs. Sell in the middle of their hopes and dreams. And just practice doing that over and over until it becomes 2nd nature to buy as close to the bottom as possible.

To someone else's point, the stock was up \~170%. This is considered over-extended, but could have kept going with the right conditions. To see this in action, watch pre-market runners to see the highs and lows that news can bring. Then watch them into market open to see how the mass of traders/investors react to the news. When you're considering penny stocks in the .0001 - $1 range, yes these can fly on speculation. But when you're considering an nyse ticker like $COCP, this brings in a different caliber of traders, algos, etc. The PR headline and content for news are particularly worded to garner a certain reaction by traders. Sometimes a stock doesn't run on news because its already been priced in, or its recycled news, or fluff to raise the stock price to then dilute. In terms of stop-losses, there is actually debate, but try it for yourself (paper trade) and see what happens when you set your stop-loss. Is it near where many others set theirs? Good chance the algos will capitalize on that. Keep learning something everyday, from different people and you'll slowly start to understand. Many professional traders have years (5-25+) of experience and have blown up accounts and it took them time to consistently make money.
COCP isn't even at all time high. It was slightly higher than this in Dec 2020, and Feb 2021. People started selling on no news. It's not like it wasn't on anyone's radar. You mean how do you know when to buy just before they announce good news? Good luck with that.

Penny stocks are more subject to volatility due to low market cap. Although it looks like COCP climbed from last night's close of 1.20 all the way up to it's all time peak of 3.40 before coming down some. That much gain in a day isn't likely to hold. It's currently at 2.33, so your stop loss did exactly what it's supposed to do and saved you from loosing more money.
