Hey Geo, I don't disagree with your points here. I think Congress in general (irrespective of party with majority) has been largely inefficient in acting on moving this industry forward. That being said, it took someone as sleazy as Trump to become the saviour for the industry. In addition it's not all done yet, I have a feeling there's a curve somewhere in here with hemp regulations and that'll likely hit the industry the wrong way at some point. With all that being said, I would still applaud Trump for pushing this through (whatever be his motivation) wherein he could've easily sat on it if he wanted to. I am pretty sure there's big money pushing for this to happen and he cared more for it and wanted to get this done in a way that benefits the big boys as opposed to what Dems would have done (introduced some DEI bits). Either way, progress is good and hopefully the industry gets some much needed attention or otherwise these stocks would be on a back burner till 2028 (a lot of them would have gone bankrupt by then). Honestly, I think that's DEI done right. It's one consideration out of many on whose right for the job, just like seniority, performance, technical vs soft skills are all considerations. I agree that Costco never went out of their way, but I think it's bc they never needed to. DEI is part of their business model, not just lip service. It's hard to source local merchandise or understand your shopper demographic if you only hire white dudes, for example. The diversity of products actually comes from a very diverse workforce. It's a positive feedback loop.

Your pretty spot on on everything when it comes to Costco, except for the DEI. Costco is pretty diverse but they don’t go out of their way to make it happen, at least at the warehouse levels. I cannot vouch for what goes on at the corporate levels. Costco strives for seniority and merit based promotions, so it kind of levels the playing field for all for all the employees. I will at least say, that every Costco location does have to have at least one female AGM.

While they are factually accurate in saying that there is nothing out there that meets the current criteria, but they fail to explicitly mention state approved MSO carve out and the proposed DEA application and approval process. It also excludes the a major boost that this provides (280e elimination at least for medical) but instead solely focusses on DEI and equity bits as a major impact (which I get equally important but they've alsoebbeen the reasons why there's no movement whatsoever in this space).

My favorite is ELF. They are a cruelty free low budget makeup company. They are fair trade and have good employee reviews. They are pro DEI and have one of the most diverse boards. The only minor flaws I found are that they had a commercial where they used an influencer that turned out to be a bigot. And there was an issue with them misrepresenting their financials once. No company is 100% perfect. They are also still relatively new compared to other makeup companies so they have room to grow. You need a company that is both good and able to expand for stock growth. Much of their product comes from China, so tarriffs are a concern. But they are working on expressing both to diversify their sources and to sell to more countries. Of all the companies I've looked into, they are the most ethical that is also publicly traded. Unfortunately most ethical companies are private. That's not a coincidence. Going public incentivizes companies to cut corners for profit.

The difference is, all the things you described weren't culture war issues other than DEI. Nobody is mad at any company for sourcing locally or hiring disabled people. Target publicly dug their heels in on overt, hot button political and social controversies. Costco never brought politics into their stores or corporate PR mouthpieces, they played it safe from an optics standpoint. It's the very key lesson to be learned here, because as you pointed out, everybody still loves Costco and nobody even noticed they didn't stick their neck out on flavor the month progressive virtue signaling like Target did.

Things could certainly change, no doubt about it. But I’m still on the side that it’s more likely US continues its dominance. China just does not appeal to non Chinese people as an authoritarian state. I don’t see how it’ll ever attract global talent like US or Europe. And Asian countries are just too insular in general to the outside world. Even Japan or Korea, first world democracies, really cant attract any global talent. Japanese/Chinese culture are just too difficult with very rigid social norms. I am certainly cheering on Europe as it’s good for everyone for Europe to be more innovative. But my sense is Europeans don’t want at all to be more like America. They will fight tooth and nail for their high taxes and welfare and 35 hour work weeks. I understand why they do that, as why would the average person want to reshape their society to make it easier for the 1%? But as long as America rewards the 1% disproportionately more, they’re going to flock to America. The only real factor here is whether Trump destabilizes the country enough in the next 3 years so that the damage is deep and irreversible. 3 years is a long time but so far I don’t think we’re really there. Businesses are still chugging along fine. There are some fights over university funding cause of DEI but honestly the DEI stuff is not at all popular with Americans in the first place, and the schools themselves have gone way too far.
