Indeed. Brand ethos matters and whether you agree with DEI or not, it certainly mattered to its shoppers. Target's main demographic is professional suburbanites. You pay a little more than Walmart for a nicer looking store with better optics (progressive corporate policy, no slave wages, etc.) and a built in Starbucks. Truly makes me wonder if these companies know who shops at their stores before they make these decisions.

It goes beyond “politics”. For example, once they ditched their policy they started carrying black rifle coffee, which is arguably garbage coffee and only exists to appeal to gun loving magas. There’s no reason to offer it in your stores because it doesn’t appeal to your customer base AND it’s not good coffee. Target used to celebrate black business owners and artists. It used untouched model photos and diverse model groups. It wasn’t about being “woke” it was just a general ethos of being a good company and having a stance and accepting some People will go to Walmart instead. They did a 180 with Trump and undid so much of what they built. Meanwhile, Costco said we love our DEI policy and so do our customers and is currently suing the Trump admin for tariff costs. It’s not about republicans or left vs right, it’s about your company ethos and the customer base you cater to (vs just catering towards profit no matter what).
After Trump won the election they canceled all their DEI programs preemptively to please the administration. This was shortly after they walked back having a "pride" section in their clothing department every June.

Regardless of what your stance is on ESG or DEI initiatives, putting this up for a vote from shareholders helps Microsoft make this important choice democratically. After all, shareholders have rights. This is pretty easy to defend against future regulatory changes in the future, "the shareholders voted in it, we are representing their best interests" If you want a perspective on the other side of the coin, look into the Costco vite earlier this year, where shareholders overwhelmingly voted no on an anti DEI initiative.

We used to spend 200-500 a month at target. We haven’t gone since they got rid of DEI, and won’t be back until they reverse course. I know many others in my area that are the same. I’m in a suburb of a mid size city, that is very mixed politically.

Target rode on their image of being "the cooler, cleaner version of Walmart" without actually improving the shopping experience at all. And I mean this before all the DEI back and forth. Walmart has been busting ass to provide a better shopping experience ever since COVID while Target did nothing but create a membership that doesn't actually provide any benefits. Then you factor in the back and forth DEI/LGBTQ+ stuff. It's a textbook example of why smart businesses just stay out of the political arenas entirely. Then finally, the logistics side of actually putting product on shelves. I feel like this needs no explanation. The value prop of spending 2-5% more on the exact same products at Target over Walmart is just non-existent anymore.

Everyone is a potential target. My former company very publicly announced ending their DEI programs, and while they were not an obvious target they have a lot of government contracts. Target doesn’t but can still be threatened.
The only way that they'll right the ship is a MONSTROUS mea culpa. Public reversal of their DEI rollback, engaging POC creators, a fat check to charities, a regime change at the top, and a lot of groveling. Until then my entire family will continue to boycott. I'm from Minneapolis originally, and grew up with Target. I live in the south now and even though I am pretty much forced to shop at Walmart or Dollar General. I was happy to give my nearest Target (about 40 miles away) my business any chance I got. The moment they announced their stance on DEI I instantly refused to shop there ever again. Never understood the business model where insulting and excluding any demographic that wants to give you money is a great plan. But I do know about these complicated financial things. Just now I'll give my money to the Salvation Army bell ringer outside Walmart before Target ever sees it.

It’s not just the Pride stuff. When Dem’s were in office they boasted about their DEI practices. When Trump took office, they very vocally announced that they were halting such practices. I bought them back in 2020 as my family did a lot of shopping there during the pandemic and the stores were always packed. Absolutely terrible decision on my part and I finally sold my shares at a significant loss back in 2023. Thank god I did, its been nothing but unforced errors ever since. They marketed themselves as "woke" upscale Walmart and then ended their DEI efforts and LGBT friendly brands to cater to Walmart shoppers after Trump won in 2024, which led to a massive backlash they haven't recovered from from their core customers all to cater to people who... shop at Walmart. How their C-suite still have jobs is the biggest mystery to me
Target’s fundamentals are from the Stone Age. They could’ve been the first to take in AI and it wouldn’t have made a difference. I honestly don’t even think their DEI and pride stuff really made a difference. They’re brick and mortar retail. Walmart has the majority of sales because they’re actually priced lower and Amazon sells the same Chinese crap but to your door. The death knell of Target started ringing 10 years ago tbh. If they wanted market share they should’ve been doing home sales back in 2013 instead they were fine with making money off suburban moms.
You know that DEI isn't a strict "we need to hire more XYZ people to fill our quota". It's a commitment to hiring a diverse background of people and making sure they feel equal and included.

I could see Tesla faltering further as they continue to bleed people and not introduce new product beyond stripped down designs from 2019. While they continue to promise things they still haven't delivered and may never be able to, they do have guberment contracts to help them out though. They seem to be able to convince government to give them millions on his other projects to build tunnels to nowhere to "alleviate" traffic. I can't see Google going anywhere. The current administration is very friendly to them and the rest of the tech companies. Many of the anti trust investigations against them were dropped with the right amount of donations to the administration. The EU's investigations will not be enough to force them to do anything substantial. Target isn't a crazy thing to suggest. Department stores aren't a good investment when going up against services like Amazon or Walmart. Target did completely mess up their expansion into Canada buying another failing department store chain and then thinking they could replace the supply chain overnight with theirs. While it was 10 years ago now, they did lose 5.4 billion on that BS. That was a big fuck up. So how much are they losing on the domestic side of things with using the same decision making skills that got them into that mess is what I would look into. The optics on their decision to reverse DEI measures hasn't played out well for their stock price either. They are lucky the real estate market isn't as strong these days, or Private Equity could have come in to try and Red Lobster their properties against them.

Over the past few weeks, despite my creating Record Achievements for our Country including, a Total and Complete Victory on the Shutdown, Closed Borders, Low Taxes, No Men in Women’s Sports or Transgender for Everyone, ending DEI, stopping Biden’s Record Setting Inflation, Biggest Regulation Cuts in History, stopping EIGHT WARS, rebuilding our Military, being RESPECTED by every Country in the World (as opposed to being the laughingstock that we were just 12 months ago!), having Trillions of Dollars (Record Setting!) INVESTED in the U.S.A., and having created the “HOTTEST” Country anywhere in the World from being a DEAD Country just 12 months ago (and so much more!), all I see “Wacky” Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN! It seemed to all begin when I sent her a Poll stating that she should not run for Senator, or Governor, she was at 12%, and didn’t have a chance (unless, of course, she had my Endorsement — which she wasn’t about to get!). Relatively speaking, Target is one of the good guys and always has been. Their public stance changes on DEI and LGBT were pure survival in light of the current administration, and very little else changed, including all their actual internal policies related to practices around DEI and LGBT. In contrast, Walmart always played catch up around those categories, but they still lag behind Target. By your logic, Walmart has always been the nail that sticks up furthest, but then again they weren't the target of a pride campaign because they fell from grace for a while because of Target's messaging adjustments. As I result, I do think that very few organizations will have pro-DEI / LGBT stances in the foreseeable future. There will be a few that will make that a differentiator, but otherwise public messaging around these topics is going to be severely muted because they now know that if they ever have to batten down the hatches for a while from a messaging standpoint, the pride and other communities will shit all over them forevermore because they ever dared to be less than perfect. Yeah, so now no one wins.. except Trump. He wins. Yay team.
