I think there is a lot happening here that the Western world is failing to comprehend. I'm very bullish on the Nikkei for a few reasons. The BOJ will raise interest rates in the next 12 months. Interest rates have been zero (ZIRP) for a decade as Japan was extremely deflationary. This recently changed and that's a very good thing as there are numerous signs of sustainable inflation and wage growth occurring and this is a big deal for the Nikkei. When interest rates rise, the yen carry trade will fail to make sense and more Japanese money will repatriate their money. With the Japanese bubble crash, the Japanese became notorious savers and had a deep mistrust of the Nikkei. But with the oldest population in the world, a lot of wealth is in cash and being passed on, it's truly a generational transfer of affluence. Japan recognizes they have an opportunity to bring money home, so they've introduced  Nippon Individual Savings Account (NISA) program, with the primary purpose of encouraging domestic investment. The new NISA program allows Japanese (and foreign residents) to invest significantly more money into the Nikkei. Add that to a younger generation who is cognizant of what's transpiring in the United States and that will provide run for the Nikkei. Finally, middle class Chinese are moving here in droves. It's astounding really and not spoken about outside of Japan all that often. Many of these Chinese expats intend to stay in Japan, speak Japanese, essentially embrace and become Japanese. Obviously, a big reason for this is because they can also patriate their income in Japan. It will take a bit of time, especially with the global financial backdrop, but again, I am very bullish on Japan. Obviously, everything hinges on the interest rate hike and with the global financial backdrop, that could end up being a long ways away. But I think a Japanese value ETF like EWJV would be a great investment for many people. It's astounding how many incredibly well run businesses are in that index and how undervalued they are.

If you buy in a taxable they will be labeled ADR’s and you claim foreign tax credit when doing your taxes, some give dividends some don’t. If you like certain companies go ahead and buy stock in it, like Mitsubishi heavy like you mentioned or Nintendo or Toyota or other various Japanese companies. I don’t hold any in taxable but hold EWJ, EWJV and DXJ in my IRA.

**Mid 20's with $67K laying around - portfolio advice and what to do?** I'm very new to investing and I admit, I did get into it a little late since I've been working for a few years already. Better late than never though, so I'd appreciate any and all advice you have! **Background:** * Unemployed (laid off in March 2025) * Previous salary \~$78K USD * Planning to move to England so will need some money easily on hand * Will attempt to find work, but likely will have to take a pay cut **HYSA:** \~$67K with 3.8% APY **401K:** \~$24.5K with Fidelity Freedom Index 2060 **Roth IRA:** \~$15.2K with dividends auto-reinvested and the following approx breakdown: * EWJV: 23% * QQQM: 23% * SPYI: 15% * VOO: 39% I've been told to open an HSA if I can, so I'm planning to set aside that \~$4.1K to max it out for this year. I haven't opened a brokerage account though, so I was wondering: * **How much should I set aside in the brokerage account vs HYSA?** * **Should my investments in my brokerage account be similar to my Roth IRA, or different?** * **Do I just "leave it and forget it" like I do with my retirement accounts?** * **Should I slowly be buying stocks overtime, or buy them all at once when I have funds?** I've always set money into my retirement accounts but didn't know I needed to invest them until earlier this year - combined with the recent layoff, I'm a little nervous and feel behind on my money management. Thank you all for your help in advance!

Loving my EWJV

That would definitely be better. I have DFIV (basically S&P 500 but for non US stocks) and EWJV (Japanese top 100) and both are weighted to have a P/E as low as possible while still reflecting the market. I know they exist for the S&P 500 but I just want a small tweak. I thoroughly enjoy both DFIV and EWJV and I enjoy owning VOO for it's own merits. It would be cool to own an index without overly relying on a stock I wouldn't purchase independently of the ETF. I was thinking about this question for a while after I saw EWY (Korean top 100) with 22% Samsung. I like Samsung I'm just not thrilled it has 22% in the ETF and would like to not be so reliant on over weight companies.

CNBC has Blackstone's COO on, and he mentioned how their firm is looking at Japan. I agree with him since I got into EWJV recently. I had DXJ for a while, made a good run, but sold it in February when it flatline and uncertainty picked up. I am taking a chance on WJRYY, Japan West Railway, an OTC since it's a foreign company. Japanese companies and ETFs have seen less downturn during the volatility, and I feel like they will stay under the radar to an extent with the tariff and political nonsense. Let alone how they have a global expo in Osaka where Japan West Railway operates, and to me it's a country that could see a good breakout. Long term the population is a problem, but they have plenty of great global companies and appeal abroad.

Where I am buying, or looking at are foreign stocks or ETFs. SPY is down about 5% YTD. EWJV, a Japan ETF, up about 6% YTD. FXI, large cap China ETF, up 17%. EUAD, Euro Defense, up 38% YTD. To me it says things might be more stable overseas, and bigger money is leaving the US or not going into the US right now like the past. Also, to an extent less volatile. Some saw a notable drop during a big sell off, but recovered quickly.

I think your current plan is good. You have a large cash position to buy as the market drives prices down. I like EWJV personally. Japanese Value ETF

Still more interested in international equities. Just added GSIB, GREK, EWJV to my EU, CN and emerging market holdings. I have started to DCA a *little bit* of US like SONY, COMP, LTH, BRK-B, INOD, INTC, UBER.

I own EWJV (Japan Value ETF). It is beating the S&P YTD (over 17%). Holdings-10% is Toyota, others are Mitsubishi, Honda, etc.

EWJV - Japan Value from iShares. Has like a 57% overlap with EWJ but value tilt. I am not making a killing on it or anything, but fits the diversification box. I think there are some currency hedged Japan ETFs too.

not all active I guess, but heres a few value names I like that definitely provide a different sort of risk profile (both foreign and domestic): SLYV, EFV, EWJV, GVAL, AVDV, AVES, EYLD. Those final 4 are more exotic. I really like the all the Cambria offerings. I have a fair bit of EYLD. They also have another which is VERY similar but it has slightly different criteria for how they select.

What is the difference between the few EWJ stocks? Like EWJV or EWJE?
