.. if we have an election. Yes, yes, I know, they are controlled by the state and this will NEVER happen. I don't need a bot auto response. We also thought election fraud could never happen in this country, but he destroyed the concept of democracy by casting doubt on the election process, ensuring future elections are also looked at with skepticism. We also never could have imagined the executive branch building his own private army that only he controls, isn't bound to the constitution like all other armed forces, and has total immunity from the law. We also never could have imagined Trump removing the system of checks and balances that have existed for hundreds of years in order to enrich himself and his family, unilaterally declare war and invade other countries without congressional approval. After all this, is it really that big of a stretch to imagine that Trump WANTS martial law so he can remain in power? He could easily cancel elections if we are in a state of emergency, and all those MAGA fans that originally said, "he can't do that, it's controlled by the states, and if he did, I would be upset," will cheer as he wipes his ass with the constitution once again.

Anecdotally, my wife & I - still employed thankfully - are getting creamed everywhere we look. Power bill was $800 this month (NYC). Grocery bill is eye popping. Daycare...forget about it. Somehow my car insurance (Progressive) went down lol but I drive on purpose a beat up RAV4 that's paid off. Jitters about the economy are itself an issue since people pull back spending which is obviously massively important such a consumer spending based economy. SCOTUS should man the fk up and firmly declare tarriffs are the purview of Congress per the U.S. Constitution. Coupled with a check on Trump come November, that might be enough to stabilize this wobbly economy. I get some on the Left want to see MAGA crash & burn and it might be coming regardless, but deep recessions/borderline depression - which we have not had in over 15 years and we've had a *absurd* bull market to boot - is nasty nasty stuff. Ignoring sunk costs, maintaining the constellation requires the continuous replacement of satellites—on the order of 1,000–2,000 satellite launches per year. No terrestrial ISP operates under anything remotely comparable. Once Starlink is spun out from SpaceX, those launches would, in principle, need to be purchased at market rates, further increasing the cost base. That leaves two viable customer groups: remote users and governments. The former is a small, price-sensitive market. The latter is constrained by geopolitics—few foreign governments are eager to make critical communications infrastructure dependent on a single U.S.-controlled private company (MAGA, America First, America Only, ...).

But in the end, we should really thank Trump and MAGA Republicans for showing us Canadiens that we've become too comfortable in our relationship with America. That's probably why we're all feeling quite positive about new trade deals with Europe and Asia and other countries that are not, you know, the United States.
You can inch around it however you want. But the thing is, China is an authoritarian society. The people don't have freedom of speech, they can be disappeared for speaking out against their government. They aren't a democracy (you can't call something elections if there's only one party to vote for). And their leader is a dictator who has appointed himself chairman for life.
