I grew up in former Eastern Bloc countries (USSR & GDR). If you read a decent history book, you would know that communist confiscated land, real estate, factories, machinery aso. from the owners without compensation simply by order of a dictator or dictator collective (non elected). Owners who protested were threatened, thrown into jail or had to flee the country. Communists are known as the worst state criminals in history (Stalin, Mao just as a few examples). Private property at scale (more than a home or than a very small business) was illegal. A proper redistribution would be by law through taxes created by an elected legislation based on constitution, which wasn't the case in those countries.

I got both GDR and DDR Deutschmarks that used to be worth something. Someday the Euro will be worth nothing, along with every other fiat currency.

>Nato has broken an agreement To be fair this is a complicated topic and Putin is trying hard to make a case about it to justify the war but more for the inner political narrative. If you're interested I've translated the main part were the confusion / problem and the propaganda stems from (from German to English) >The Kremlin sees the clearest and propaganda most powerful piece of evidence for the alleged breach of promise in the talks between the American Secretary of State James Baker and Gorbachev on February 9, 1990. In the event of a reunification of Germany and its continued membership in NATO, Baker is quoted as saying, the NATO extended "not an inch to the east". However, "East" meant the territory of the GDR. >This limitation did not apply to the Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, Hans-Dietrich Genscher. According to a memorandum from the Federal Foreign Office on February 10, 1990, he told his Soviet counterpart Eduard Shevardnadze that the membership of a united Germany in NATO raised complicated questions. For his government, however, it is clear that NATO "will not expand to the east". From the document it is clear that Genscher – contrary to Baker – was referring to the expansion of NATO across Eastern Europe. >In his memoirs, however, Genscher makes a clarification that is important for assessing the question of NATO enlargement. The talks were not about any kind of guarantees for the Soviet Union, but about a "scan" in the run-up to actual negotiations. A memorandum from the British National Archives, which media such as Der Spiegel cited a few days ago as evidence that Putin was right, does not change that. Neither Jürgen Chrobog, who was quoted there as head of Genscher's office, nor Genscher himself could speak on behalf of NATO. >Baker's personal notes also show that the American President at the time, George HW Bush, did not believe in such soundings by the Germans. He called on Chancellor Helmut Kohl to refrain from discussing a hypothetical NATO expansion beyond the GDR. >For years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev continued to promote the "guarantee" narrative. In October 2014 he finally admitted the historical truth to the Russian newspaper Kommersant: “The topic of NATO expansion was not discussed at all and it was not raised in those years [1990/91]. Not a single Eastern European country has raised this issue. Nor have Western leaders upset them. I hope this clears up how Putins propaganda is working.

tldr; The Central Bank of Russia once again suspended trading on the nation's leading Moscow Stock Exchange (MOEX) on Wednesday, and will not open the exchange on Thursday. Trading on the MOEX has been halted since February 25, after Russia launched its ongoing military occupation of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Russia GDR Index, which tracks the value of Russian stocks listed on the London Stock Exchange, has lost 93% *This summary is auto generated by a bot and not meant to replace reading the original article. I don't disagree. I just see it play out more in favor of crypto. Asian exporters to Russia will gladly accept crypto payments, which will be tolerated inofficially by the government out of necessity. I don't see them carrying around suitcases full of USD/€ when crypto is an option now that 70% of russian banks are banned from swift. Yes officially crypto remains evil and under threat of prison or worse. That won't stop the inofficial shadow economy. Young Russians will adapt. Seed phrases can be transported and secured way better than physical cash. Precautions are also straight forward: VPN, buy BTC on NYC exchange, use mixer, send to fresh anonymous wallet. There have been complicated barter systems in the GDR in order to get a pair of bluejeans. People are crafty and many Russians will figure crypto out. The main motivation will be that they will need it for imported/smuggled goods.

But will they need to cash out their crypto? Imo the Russian economy will split three ways: 1) Rubel (for goods provided from the state, taxes, wages), 2) hard foreign currency and 3) barter (for anything else). The GDR worked like that and Cuba does to this day. A-tier cryptos are well suited for such a split economy. Getting rubel when you have hard currency/crypto/goods will never be a problem. Finding someone who is willing to sell you something for rubel will be. There is even room for a new escrow-crypto to reduce trust-dependency (issue on-chain-payment as soon as delivery has been confirmed).

To be fair from all I hear the 1970ies were a pretty decent time to live in (in many countries at least). Admittedly I would live in a socialist dictatorship but at least my dad says things were better in the GDR.

Correct. They're omnipresent in Germany, at least in the "former GDR" where I live. Yeah, big. And they have many oldtimers as customers who might be persuaded that, if the Sparkasse is doing it, it can't be too shady. Doesn't mean they're gonna buy, but it gives crypto a touch of trustworthiness in their eyes. My guess.
