Yeah this hits on something real, the liquidity trap is the part most people don't think about until they're already in it. A coin being "abandonded" and a coin being "acquirable" are almost mutually exclusive because once the devs leave, exchanges follow and you're left holding something you literally cannot sell. The more realistic version of what you're describing is getting in early on a fresh launch where supply distribution is still open, like the TKS presale on tokenkickstarter where you can pick up tokens before exchange listing and actually have meaningful position size without moving the market on yourself.
yeah that survivorship bias point is exactly it, the moment a project is liquid enough to actually buy it means someone still cares enough to keep it alive, and that someone usually holds a ton of it. I went the same route honestly, used tokenkickstarter to pick up some TKS during presale since the multi-chain deployment stuff at least shows there's active dev happening. way less headache than trying to dig through coinmarketcap graveyards looking for something that won't rug or just stop processing withdrawals entirely.
Yeah this is a rabbit hole I've gone down too, the survivorship bias thing is real. Projects that are truly dead enough to have no controlling stakeholder also tend to be dead enough that no exchange will touch them anymore, which kills the whole premise. The ones that stay liquid almost always have some whale or foundation quietly sitting on a chunk. Honestly for anyone wanting early exposure to something with actual development still happening, I grabbed some TKS tokens from tokenkickstarter during presale since it's multi-chain and still actively building, which is basically the opposite of what you described but felt safer than hunting ghost chains.
Yeah, sorry for that. I post my comments on a free WhatsApp group, and it's the only way to get everyone's attention to the importance of the message. TKS BTW...;-)

Me trying to buy before a pump:
  Ready to invest

Last year this time I had money...
I got in crypto in September 2017. I felt really euphoric and put all the money I had at that time. I was up 50% and was looking forward to 10x. Start relocating my portfolio to small caps. Guess what, after crash my portfolio was down 85% in one point. It was heartbreaking to even look at it. All I did is just left everything in BTC and stopped following crypto completely. After years, BTC recovered and my bloody 85% loss went up to 20% gain. But it took 3 years for that and most of the small coins were completely dead (NULS,GTO,LRC,TKS,SUB,EDO,QSP)
