Many of my trades come later in the day after, as you say, stocks have gone up 50-300%. You're not wrong for avoiding the initial surge. But there are great strategies for later in the day on those types of stock. The number one thing for you to know as a day trader is that you need to be where the action is. So stocks that have gone up that much in the first part of the day have definitely attracted a crowd and thus are likely decent candidates for a day trade. An example from today is ALBT. It's easy to find these stocks because of course they show up on every list of gainers, or abnormal volume stocks. So you watch it go from 30 cents to a dollar in the first half an hour. Then you watch for chart patterns and breaks from predictive patterns during the rest of the day. The intra day break on ALBT came at 1:54 est. It went for another %100 plus. You need to be a master of emotions and only trade within a strategy you know well and that has a proven success rate. You need to control risk. You need to know when you are wrong and buy a position size that reflects the amount you're willing to lose. MBOT was another buy but it was earlier in the day, during the initial run. For that you need a bit more technology behind you to trade in real time and take advantage of emotion in the market. It's possible. But start with the intra-day pullback breaks.

if ALBT can crack above 3.90 by end of week, I would not be surprised if ran to $4.20ish & then $4.56!
