The common thread last time was that AMTD was the underwriter for the stocks which exploded. Many of the same stocks are/were going crazy today. However today is different in that the movement hasn’t happened to AMTD or HKD, as well as how insane the price rises have been.

Neither. You get margin called when the amount of buying power your position is using up is greater than the total amount of buying power your account has. (BTW, this discussion is theoretical because you can't have only $200 in a margin account. You're required to keep your account equity at $2000 or more in a margin account.) When this happens depends on your brokerage's margin calculations. For example, my brokerage, TD Ameritrade, publishes a [margin handbook](https://www.tdameritrade.com/retail-en_us/resources/pdf/AMTD086.pdf) which shows (page 15) that an uncovered put requires the greatest of: a) 20% of the underlying stock less the out-of-the-money amount, if any, plus 100% of the current market value of the option(s) b) For calls, 10% of the market value of the underlying stock PLUS the premium value. For puts, 10% of the exercise value of the underlying stock PLUS the premium value. or c) $50 per contract plus 100% of the premium. So it would depend in part on both the spot price of the underlying stock and the current market value of the option. In your example, as soon as any one of the three above formulas resulted in a value of more than $200, you would get margin called.

I don't know who your brokerage is, but they probably make this information available somewhere. For example, TD Ameritrade publishes a [margin handbook](https://www.tdameritrade.com/retail-en_us/resources/pdf/AMTD086.pdf) where you can look up the formulas they use. Futures and futures options use a different kind of margin, SPAN margin, which I admit I don't understand the intricacies of.

Here is TDA's margin handbook, which is easily found by googling "TDA margin handbook." E\*Trade must have something similar, which I couldn't find, but I'm sure their customer service could point you it. What you're describing is a calendar spread. If the short leg is nearer-dated than the long, it's a net credit position and will take up margin buying power.

This isn't a theory, this is a fact. The company in question is AMTD, they're also related to HKD and MEGL. HKD is by far their most successful attempt and was probably their first try at... whatever it is that they done. The previous run from them was the most interesting due to how many stocks were increasing alongside them. There was at least 10 that I was aware of (maybe more, memory is hazy). The media was really quick to blame retail for these stocks because they started trending really well online however it's literally my job to track retail traders, and we were as caught out as everyone else. However, onto your point about TCJH. It might blow up, and I'd love that for you, however I wouldn't bank on it. I don't know that we're seeing the same kinds of patterns that we previously have, though that could be because they've changed the mechanism they're using. Worth watching for sure, especially as TOP is allowed to trade again tomorrow, but I'd be careful.

What about this part? >on the Options Trading line, click on About My Level. When you do that, under "You're approved for:," is one of the entries "Uncovered calls and puts?" If so, you can sell puts without having the full cash for assignment available. You can create an order in Thinkorswim (which is what you should be using, NOT the TD Ameritrade mobile app,) and when you go to review the order, before sending (by clicking Confirm & Send on the desktop platform, or Review in ToS Mobile,) it will show you the buying power reduction for the trade. Note that this is only the initial margin. The amount of margin the position uses up will fluctuate dynamically and is calculated based on the value of the underlying, the value of the option, and how far OTM it is. What doesn’t make sense is the float is 35m and trading was 34m. Some low floats trade 20x the float in a day and don’t run more than 200%. For this to go up yes it was 3000% is really strange. Spreads require margin accounts. I belive the Options Clearing Corporation requires this of brokers. Options are not marginable, in the sense that you generally cannot borrow cash based on option value, as distinct from shares margin borrowing. Margin in options is cash collateral that you provide to hold a trade. There are several option trading levels at most brokers. Inquire at your broker. Opps. I didn't mean to imply that a long box spread is related to T-bills. They are not related. A long box spread is an interest arbitrage strategy that should capture about 50 or more bps than a t-bill. It's like an ironbox but the p/l is squared off. It's commonly described as a bull call spread with a bear put spread where both vertical spread strikes are the same. You would use a european contract with liquidity such as SPX and can hold till expiration. I only mentioned long box spreads because you mentioned you are trading options. Most platforms like ToS require that you construct it manually so you have to be familiar with constructing 4 legged spreads and using the correct underlying because you MUST use european options or you have early exercise risk. That said - do you have a reg-t or pm margin account? I just modeled the trade in ToS papertrading and long box spreads do not appear to be margin efficient in a reg-t account which I suppose makes sense. ​ >I would not be writing contracts in BIL, purely holding “shares” for the daily interest. Yes - I understand what you are trying to say. If you are primarily capturing theta, and you are holding cash as your collateral for your short options, you can hold a fixed income asset instead. I do not know how mmf's are treated in a reg-t account. I call TDA every once in a while to ask if they can have their margin risk team review the requirements on money market funds since the short duration treasury ETF margin requirements are lower. If you decide to use a mmf - bear in mind it is non-marginable for 30 days. But as I mentioned - if you write options in an IRA cash account in Schwab/TDA and similar brokers, mmf's like SWTXX is a cash equivalent. My guess is institutions or a few hedge funds created a play that looked like an easy 'lull in dumb money to go long before unlocking period dilution' and dump the price. When really what may have happened is they lured in other HFs/Institutions to go short against "dumb money", whereby they trapped them into an unlocking period where insiders never intended to sell/dilute. Maybe they're intending to loan out their unlocked shares though.

HKD/AMTD is registered in Hong Kong. As far as I know, there has been no regulatory crackdown on it. So the pump&dump will continue. My initial theory was that the pump & dumpers suck money from bag holders and siphon the money into their pockets. So at the end of the day, the nationality doesn't matter. Just in this case, it's a Chinese stock and the profits go to them.
