Yeah I should’ve played DG after seeing DLTR loss

Mentions:#DG#DLTR

They have problems for sure. Hit the Naked $175 Calls today because that earnings report was awful and so was DLTR. That being said stocks at multi year lows are great for Naked Calls. If it had bounced just buy shares and let them get called away. A lot of the risk has been taken out of these lately. Value stocks starting to get a better Risk/Reward skew. If I wasn’t an options trader I would say use the “ 3 Day Rule “ don’t touch it for 3 days after earnings and let it flush out then start a DCA pyramid with shares. 15,30,55 at support levels under wherever it bottoms for a scale in long.

Ha FIVE after DLTR and DG that’s a twist

Mentions:#DLTR#DG

Bought $FIVE puts at close because $DG and $DLTR missed… Idk how Ill financially recover from this…

Mentions:#DG#DLTR

It does, yet DG and DLTR both had rough quarters. I would have thought FIVE would fair the same.

Mentions:#DG#DLTR

Both DG and DLTR reported slowing consumer spending. They are two of the bigger dollar stores, so I think k a smaller company like FIVE will suffer badly. If my puts print I will flip them into long shares of DG which I plan to hold forever. They got hit hard but are a fundamentally sound company and are rapidly growing their business. My company does a ton of work for them.

Mentions:#DG#DLTR

Puts on FIVE. DG and DLTR both missed earnings. 6/9/23 puts.

Mentions:#DG#DLTR

Yes and no. DLTR did the same thing on a miss a little over a year ago. The dollar stores tend to crazy drop when they miss and it'll stay down for a bit then rise back when it's clear that it's an overreaction

Mentions:#DLTR

DLTR missed. DG missed. FIVE after hours today, I wonder what will happen with them 🤔

Mentions:#DLTR#DG

Lol right, DLTR too 😂

Tomorrow? Hope $CORN tanks and set up for Thursday... DG = puts. *DLTR tanks cause well the poors got no monies. DG poots for the pin action.* LULU calls cause....well nice asses always stylin..

I was using finviz, which puts them in the consumer defensive sector, and discount stores industry. Personally, I think they trend more to the discretionary side of that industry than other names. Walmart has much more defensive value than target because of their grocery dominance. WMT is possibly the ultimate defensive retailer (other than pure play grocers). So yeah, I'm looking for more merchandise comps than just the sector. BJs has grocery too, but is more dependant on other items. That's why I think DLTR and BJs are better comps. I'd also consider other discretionary names as possible comps. FL and ASO have been down a lot. WSM had pretty flat earnings too, but it's so cheap the stock didn't fall much. So yeah, it's hard to find an exact comp. I think they tend towards discretionary, but find a nice middle. That's why I like the BJs/Costco comps. Sam's club is probably good too, but it's buried in the Walmart earnings and I'm not ambitious enough to break it out right now.

Which sector do you put Target in? It's silly to think this negative PR Target is going through hasn't impacted their stock performance past macro. DG is down 5% the past month. DLTR is down because of expected slowdown. BJ's is down but Sam's Club and Costco are outperforming in the membership club stores. Target didn't change their guidance for the full year. For a company offering 3% dividends, a 13% drop in just ten days is significant. Usually the dividends is what causes people to NOT sell the stock. Without the dividends, we might be seeing a 20% decline. Again, I'd like to know which sector you put Target in. DLTR and DG aren't their direct competitors. The closest resemblance is Walmart.

The sector as a whole had a bad week. That means money is flowing out of a troubled sector and into a hot one (probably tech). That doesn't mean that every stock adjusted to a new, perfect number. The market is imprecise. All the data so far has backed up that the drop started and then continued because target and other similar companies had bad earnings prompting money to go elsewhere. Again, look at DG, DLTR, BJ for other names in the sector getting pummeled in a similar fashion despite no controversy.

Mentions:#DG#DLTR#BJ

I'm not a holder. I do think there are much better places for my cash right now, but I thought that a long time ago, the last week has actually made it more appealing, though I like BJ if I was going to invest in a name in the sector (insert bj joke here.....). WMT is also down this week, about 5%. So is DLTR, DG, and OLLI (all 10%+ down). Those are all "conservative" names. AMZN is more a tech trade, imo, so not a great comp. BUD is about 15% off it's ATH for comparison.

We are in a recession and we are not in a recession? The economy seems to perform in a K shaped curve, where the well-to-do are thriving on the up part of the K, and the failures and poor are in decline in the down part of the K. Overall, it seems there is no recession because unemployment is low, earnings are holding up, consumer spending is holding up, GDP is still growing and home sales haven't gone off a cliff even though mortgage rates have doubled. Yet, there are homeless people everywhere and some of the companies such as DLTR or BIG that are for the low income have declined.

If you are building a solid diversified portfolio in equities only, you should own some income stocks as well. Their dividends give you exposure to payments similar to holding a bond that pays a coupon payment on certain dates until maturity. An income stock does not have the direct current market value if you need to sell in reverse (negative correlation) to interest rate movements/levels. The 60/40 equity/bond build is back in favor since the QE mania from The Fed has ended which only goosed up the equity returns over the past 13 years. A 2-year treasury bond gives you a 4.8% yield right now until maturity, with zero risk. The Rule of thumb is the older you get, and having less working/income earnings year left until retirement, the heavier you weigh on the bond side. Bonds have much less risk, especially Treasuries. One portfolio I built had tech (MSFT - small dividend), banks (JP morgan - smal dividend), retail (DLTR - retail), defense (LMT - small dividend), energy (XOM - 8% dividend) and consumer products (MO - 8% dividend) in the mix. Built that one in the fall of 2020 and has worked quite well. Well diversified. Your portfolio gets an income payment every quarter from dividends with which you can use to reinvest and buy a few more shares of the stock. Some stocks went up, some went down. Overall, the SP500 is down, and that portfolio is up. Here is one of the better links I found on sector rotation. [https://school.stockcharts.com/doku.php?id=market\_analysis:sector\_rotation\_analysis](https://school.stockcharts.com/doku.php?id=market_analysis:sector_rotation_analysis) Notice the 6 stocks I put in that portfolio fall in different sectors on the rotation map, which further diversifies your portfolio and also against market fluctuations. To size balance to start, you can use $s into each stock and not the nominal stock prices. That portfolio got a little lucky as I picked DLTR in the fall of 2020 after the March covid blip down and then popped back up as I expected coming inflation with The Fed buying over $4T in bonds. Then, after Joe won, I figured DC spending was going to ramp up. It did not hurt that the war propped up LMT and energy prices as well. Best of luck. going forward long term, I really like cyber security stocks.

Just my 2 cents, as someone who made a lot of money during the March - May 2020 fiasco. Nobody, and I repeat nobody knows what will come tomorrow or next year. Everyone says recession, some say there will be no recession. The best way to make money in the stock market is to literally live by the saying less is more. Just dollar cost average into the market, whether that be every pay period or every month is up to you. When the market goes down 10%, 20%, etc feel free to increase your contributions for that timeframe until the market recovers. This is what I did in March - May 2020, I went from contributing $1,200 a month into my brokerage account to buy VOO, and I went into overdrive and threw $3k a month (which is 70% of my take-home pay) into QQQ, and I bought a handful of stocks that I was near certain were going to do well: Wayfair and Amazon due to the start of the pandemic and the lockdowns. I sold my Wayfair in August 2020 just before it peaked. I still hold my Amazon stock today and probably will for a lifetime. I remember the months leading up to and during the pandemic there was a lot of overtime available at work and I remember working 8 double shifts in a row - that cash came in handy. **Right now if we apply the same logic as March - May 2020 to today (yeah, I know they are not the same thing) we can decipher it would be best to do the following: Begin to go into overdrive either now or soon. Buy VOO, QQQ, and pick a few stocks that you feel are going to go up over the next few months (which stocks do best during a recession: Dollar Tree (the analysts agree:** [**https://finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=DLTR&p=d**](https://finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=DLTR&p=d)**) and also McDonald's (the analysis agree:** [**https://finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=MCD&p=d**](https://finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=MCD&p=d)**).**

I completely missed ten years of tech stock "Who cares about valuation?" party, but also didn't own any of them when they finally got crushed. I briefly held FB but sold it at a small loss, deciding I didn't understand it. I now own an oil and gas ETF called FILL, Canadian dividend paying pipelines like ENB and TRP, an oil tanker firm EURN, and CROX, a value play after the market hated their Heydude acquisition. So I am up materially from November. FILL has a lot of refiners/integrateds in it, so it's not a great tracker of the commodities, but it gives me energy exposure without Canadian political risk. I am holding bags on other names: LUV, with the giant rebound in air travel demand not yet reflected in the stock due to summer logistical nightmares at airports and now recession fears. This will work, eventually. DLTR, which should be OK in a recession and was recommended by Meryl Witmer, who always makes me money, but DLTR has been slow to turn around its Family Dollar division, which was her thesis. This one, like LUV, will take more time. I own a couple of Canadian banks, which have been great historically and not great lately. I've missed lots of upside by having no exposure to Canadian oil and gas stocks because moronic PM Justin Trudeau wants to destroy the industry, which provides Canada's number one export by value. He'll probably impose a windfall tax, cheered on by fellow dipstick Juggy Singh. I managed to sell LMT right before Putin invaded Ukraine and am the only person in the world to have lost money on Apple stock, so do not follow my example on anything.

r/stocksSee Comment

LUV and DLTR LUV has the best balance sheet in the industry but their recovery from pandemic was slow and now there's recession fear. DLTR is slower than expected turning around its Family Dollar chain. It should be a great play for recession, but earnings have been disappointing.

I like the following: TXRH- Their menu isn't much more than cooking the food yourself. ORLY and AZO- eye watering prices but more tailwinds than just about anything else: electric cars, constrained new car supply, people still gotta get to work, more people wrench themselves. Even if the recession is shallow and quick, I still REALLY like these stocks. The key isn't slowing spending but where to invest strategically on what you think will persist. TGT, WMT, BJ, COST, DG, DLTR, are all too obvious and high, but FDO for example may not be, as such, an ETF may not be weighted properly for what you want to play.

There were quite a few major earnings moves from retail stocks this quarter. I took some time to look through them and these are my plays for this week: Long DLTR Long FIVE Revenue side: Discretionary spending for the lowest income showed an improvement from first half of 2022, probably due to easing commodities inflation. There was also higher demand from higher end consumers trading down. TGT and disc section of WMT and AMZN missed as a result. Discount apparel retailers ROST posted a massive beat and TJX just hit an ATH. The bar to a beat is also lowered when FIVE and DLTR cut revenue guidance in August while inflationary pressures were higher. Cost side: This is the big one. Logistics is a huge cost driver for discount stores, and shipping and trucking have been absolutely tanking this quarter. I played DLTR last year on the short side when shipping costs were at their peak and made like 300% on puts. Not sure how much costs can actually be reduced this quarter because of fixed contracts but I expect decent enough guidance. Risks: 1. Labour costs are up and may offset the drop in shipping. 2. DLTR is already at ATH and may have already priced in good earnings. But of course it can also pull a TJX.

r/wallstreetbetsSee Comment

yup! agreed, I probably will buy puts just to inverse the majority of WSB users who say DLTR calls. Not eeally sure why most say calls? Since they don't offer any deals and just the same $1.25 items compared to discount stores. It also looks overinflated and may collpase at any moment as its at the previous ATH in June

It's very hard to beat the broad market or stocks with the strongest momentum over long term. A few metrics: over past 10 years * QQQ 6x * AAPL Apple 10x * HD Home Depot 5x * DLTR Dollar Tree 6x * ORLY O'Reilly Auto Parts 5x * XLP Consumer Staples 2x You could download full history from Yahoo Finance and study for yourself. Some stocks go back decades before any ETFs, cryptocurrencies even existed. Another metric is the Price/Earning ratio, I think averagely it hovers around 16 for American stocks. Today HD is 16, DLTR 20, AAPL 25, TSLA 100. When there's much enthusiasm for a stock, they push up the P/E ratio, that's when the valuation becomes rich relative to the business fundamentals. At the beginning of the century, AAPL stock price was still repressed, later on they released iPod, iPhone, etc so it's fundamentally about the products, market share, innovation and profitability. I run the newsletter "tsterm" on Substack (for Time Series Terminal) if you are interested. At the core it's about analysis of information (what's driving what) rather than directly offering any investment advice.

Have you looked into Exxon or the water bond ETF? Try natural resource stocks. If you like AMZN, try higher risk like Datadog, Snowflake, Duolingo, etc.! Duolingo is more consumer discretionary as well. $DLTR is Consumer Staple, if you want that.

DLTR rebound on Monday?

DLTR reducing 2022 eps guidance by 10 percent was priced in the day they announced it, yesterday. Today, DLTR collapsed further, pricing in further macro pessimism, or animal spirits. What definitely isn't priced in: Meryl Witmer's $15 eps target for 2024 and $200 to $300 price target for 2024. The turnaround of Family Dollar implicit therein is also not yet in evidence, so isn't priced in and shouldn't be.

STOP! Forget options. You will lose your ass. Stop believing the YOLO bullshit if you really want to work for yourself. What I see on your chart is you had a pretty bad couple of days a few weeks ago. Imagine that times 3, and you're broke. It can and WILL happen. It happened to me. Lost 75% before I stopped, most of it in about 3 different days this spring. Buy dips on strong companies when they have earnings dumps. DLTR and NVDA the last 2 days can make you $10 a share without costing you anything. 100 shares of each at the dip, make $2k in a day. I did with DLTR and DG today, and with NVDA overnight. $300 on NVDA and DG and $700 on DLTR. I was done for the day by 9am. Tonight I am going to watch Affirm, Workday, and Ulta earnings. Buy the earnings dump either tonight or tomorrow. If nothing drops, oh well. If something drops I buy. Last thing... FORGET OPTIONS!

With $122k you can buy earnings drops and make $10k a week easy. Today DLTR dropped 12% and rebounded about 5%. Catch the bottom and ride the wave up. Easy $5k. Nvidia dropped 7% after earnings and rebounded from $166 pre market to $177. Buy 500, make $5k in a couple hours. Stop believing that what a handful of lucky people did on here will happen to you chasing options.
