LOCL-Local Bounti. They do indoor vertical growing of produce. Are actively selling their products in the western us. Risk is they aren’t yet profitable and they might never be. Reward is if they solve profitability they could soar legitimately, as they have a significantly less water intrusive method and of growing food stuffs. I am long on them, have a few hundred shares. Trading at 1.69 today, got down to about 1.20 recently.

> If it's possible to make 300k for doing almost nothing in a LCOL, in your opinion, why aren't people in that LCOL leaping into tech? This isn't tricky. Go read some of the articles I've mentioned. The folks I'm talking about are 'tech talent' with experience mostly in dev, but also in devops, product management, etc. They got hired into do-nothing jobs because there was an expectation that talent would become even harder to come by. They ended up doing no work, didn't complain about it - sat around doing nothing and are *now* complaining. Are you suggesting that blue collar folis in LOCL areas now gain several years experience in tech, and then apply to jobs that are no longer in existence?

You live in a LOCL area, have cheap rent, no debt presumably, and at an advantageous tax bracket. Odds are, you won't get a $250k job in that area. When you're in the $250k, you're taxed in some states where the salaries ARE that high, close to 45% of your pay check, then you have much higher rent and expenses peculiar to that area.

Mentions:#LOCL
r/investingSee Comment

That's correct and would be the main issue. If moving to a LOCL area that doesn't have a steeply inflated housing market, you can make out like a bandit. Some people have done this while keeping their same job (and income) through remote work.

Mentions:#LOCL
r/wallstreetbetsSee Comment

There are no more desirable LOCL areas. Here in Salt Lake City housing prices have doubled in the last 2.5 years. Pretty much no local job will allow you to buy a house now. You need to work remotely for Google or Facebook or GTFO.

The only thing we could see imo is some markets going to shit because of local issues. Say hypothetically Silicon Valley falling as the high income tech workers which have kept that market going continue wfh in LOCL areas and we see a mass dump of business estate sending the market to a shit spiral (hypothetical!! I will wet Willy you in your dreams and burn your Funko pops if you try to debate the hypotheticals probability of happening)

Here's some others: AGFY, UGRO, AGRI. There must be other companies too, This is a potentially excellent business but in the very earliest stages of development. There are many potential efficiencies from CEA (Controlled Environment Agriculture). As you mentioned using the vertical increases the yield per unit area. This increase could be multiplied by the number of harvests per year over outdoor ag. Water use can be reduced as well, both through more efficient irrigation and reduced evap loss. Whatever the case water not taken up by the crops can be recovered, potentially leading to very high efficiency in water use. Chemical for fertilizer can also be optimized better in a controlled environment, and material not consumed by the crops may be recoverable. Ideally pesticides can be eliminated. It's not obvious how total energy use would shake out: less energy would be used to apply chemicals etc, but more energy will be required for temperature control and lighting. Local growing could reduce transport energy and cost. Looks like there are really three different types of businesses emerging around CEA: 1) Growers / Farmers (LOCL, APPH) 2) Equipment / Supply distributors (GRWG, HYFM) 3) Equipment / Systems manufacturers / Distributors (HYFM, AGFY, AGRI, UGRO) AGFY is for the moment dedicated to cannabis systems, but it seems obvious that cannabis and other types of CEA systems will converge if they're not pretty similar already. There is \*potential\* for strong growth, and some companies have already seen some of that. But it's early in the game. Profitability isn't a big concern at the moment. There is lots of evolution to come in this industry if/when it scales up. It's like the software industry in 1977: no telling which companies will succeed or fail; or which will emerge as leaders or be gobbled up by others. Generally though I'd be more likely to bet on (3) than on (1). The actual farming is a marginal business.

I think its possible that these are the same forces at play now. I read an academic paper that argued the main catalyst to the 2008 crash wasnt the bad loans. Those loans didnt exist in other parts of the world that also saw a crash. For example Spain saw a crash even though they required at least 20% down and dont have forclosures. The main issues was speculation by incompetent investors especially from HCOL areas like California investing in LOCL areas (Phoenix, Las Vegas, etc ) that caused the bubble. We are seeing a lot of that now and in the same areas too. I think the NINJA loans and ARMs made things worse. We had a more severe crash than Spain but there's data showing speculation was the main issue.

LOCL (mentioned in the article as a successful SPAC) has a current bid/ask spread of $5.60 to $9.43. Considering it’s 52 week high/low is $4.40 to $12.87, I don’t even know what to make of this one

Mentions:#LOCL

I think vertical farming will remain a niche part of agriculture's future for quite awhile, and that's after doing a lot of research over the last year after being intrigued by companies like AppHarvest, Aerofarms, and Infarm. As someone mentioned, APPH is $3 and missed earnings big time last year. The Aerofarms SPAC deal was called off. Infarm was a SPAC rumor that never materialized. Local Bounti (LOCL) also went SPAC route and is down to 4.89 (which isn't actually as low as I would have thought). There are hundreds of vertical farming companies competing for market share and margins are very low. There are still a few companies I'm interested in - Infarm is pretty cool in that it builds grow pods that are installed in supermarkets. Plenty just had a huge $400M funding round with Walmart leading. Bowery Farms also had a huge recent funding round of $300M. A good resource for ag-tech news is agfundernews.

I've rode out the storm relatively well (so far), so I'll share some tips with you - feel free to use or discard them as you see fit: 1) Stay out of China. Between the escalating geopolitical tensions, the fact that a stock in BABA is just the holding company, rather than BABA itself, the corruption and inflated figures... it's a mess over there. No matter what potential it might have, hard pass, stick with US and its allies, or at least neutral countries/areas (like India, Brazil, rest of South America, etc.) 2) Take all stock tips with a grain of salt, and do your own research. Finviz has been extremely helpful in this regard, I will routinely update my portfolio 1x or 2x a week (because I'm a nerd, and it fascinates me to see the market move, plus it keeps me abreast of any changes I should know about). Evaluate a stock as a whole, rather than keying in on one specific number like P/E, PEG, EPS Growth, P/FCF, etc. Ask yourself "if things go south in the market, is this stock able to ride down with it and survive" as well as "if things keep going great, does this stock have enough potential to keep pace with other, possibly better choices". 3) Diversify, diversify, diversify, diversify. If you're owning more than 5% of an individual stock, no matter how good it looks like it could be, rebalance that portfolio. You might be right, YOLO it, and score a massive windfall if you go all in on a company. Or you may end up going down with the ship. If you spread your investments out across separate firms, in separate sectors (20% max per sector in my approach), preferably with a mix of foreign/domestic and variable cap sizes, you're going to have a more "average" portfolio but one that resists days like today. 4) If this sounds like more work than what you want to do, seriously consider putting your funds into an ETF. Individual stocks are win big, lose big depending on forces outside of your control, and I only pick individual stocks because I have the time and interest in doing it. If you don't have either of these to do proper research, hit that ETF button and fast forward. 5) If you do stick with stock picking, learn from your mistakes, and consider your losses to be lessons in your education as an investor. I started small ($200 to be precise), and put my money into far more speculative and risky stocks than I thought they were, and got bopped on the nose by a few of them (looking at you LOCL and PLUG, I don't forget you two!). But after reviewing their performance, realizing I wasn't in a great situation, I took the hit, adapted, and learned from it. Now that I'm tossing more substantial money around, that education has paid dividends. Hope this is helpful to you, at least somewhat, or maybe it helps someone else out. Regardless, best of luck and good hunting.

Exactly. Alternative methods that use less space and less water are potentially important for the future, especially as we're accidentally making traditional crops fail with the climate issues. I have 2 or 3 shares in LOCL for fun.

In short, yes. Potentially short on farmland and currently short on freshwater (see: western US/Mexico). And the world is experiencing increasing populations and a growing middle class. Which means we’ll have to become more efficient at growing foods in the next 10-30 years. APPH and LOCL are two companies in this space.

Understandable perspective, but I do think this stems from recency bias as the vast majority have done much better than that. LOCL's 1.7M float wasn't really enough by itself to send it to the moon, as I mention in the post. ESSC I have no idea what happened and am crying about it, but hopefully that one's not done considering the gamma squeeze possibility. Ultimately, I think when you have the trifecta of drivers (brand awareness, financial fundamentals, and low float similar to [RDBX](https://www.reddit.com/r/SPACs/comments/qfbvda/rdbx_a_strong_value_play_with_a_forward_pe_of_23/)), a stronger squeeze will happen, but yeah, it'll most likely come down too.
