I can still remember the various commands that was needed or could be used to take advantage of MMX or even later SSE instructions. Then GPU mining hit, another game changer. One could easily make several BTC a week and or even sometimes get rewarded for a full block during that time if mining for a time. When the difficulty increased was time to stop mining as it was too costly. One could transfer them to Mtgox via Dwolla or do meetup via Localbitcoins for gain.
