Also, don’t be surprised if he doesn’t listen to “authorities” as I’ve seen that happen often. If he has a 401k, be careful that he doesn’t withdraw it all early and then him and your mom will get hit with the early withdrawal penalty payment. I’ve seen that happen to victims. There’s also a prosecutor from the West coast who posts a lot of pig butchering content named Erin West. If this is a real pig butchering scam, there are also ways to show their “investment account” on whatever website is not real, or the website is suspicious, or the data shown doesn’t line up with real life, etc. Sadly, I find victims hard to pull out because these scams prey on their emotions. If you can call your local PD and ask if there are any scam victim services in your area, that may also be helpful if not only simply to have a resource you can talk with locally.

I suggest you tell the police and give them the wallet address your money was sent to. If this knowledge gets in the hands of the right officer/detective they may be able to freeze the wallet your money is now in (probably been moved several times but can be traced through the blockchain). You might be able to get all or at least some of the money back but it’s very time sensitive, like report it right now if you haven’t. If your local PD has a contact with USSS they have the best chance of getting your money frozen and hopefully sent back to you, or at least out of the hands of the scammer.

My best friend I grew up with was shot and killed by Phoenix PD a couple years back after stealing from a Circle K. He was unarmed and just ran away. The shot him and took his life. I can't imagine how scared he must have been in those final moments bleeding out. I miss him every single day. His poor family, too. Absolutely. Police can subpoena those records. All carriers will have them for a time period, so don’t waste time. They can see what phone was used, SIM ID, location it was used in, etc. Some phones are burners, just prepaid phones from places like Walmart and those are tougher because they’re not registered to a single user but stores keep purchase record and video usually. Because this is part of a larger group more than likely it’s also likely the FBI already has other cases reported from the group. I wasn't even going to file local PD, but after someone found out what exact exchange it went through (CoinEx) I figured I might as well contact them and they said they cooperate if contacted by authorities.
