PG&E filed for bankruptcy due to wildfire liabilities. I’m not sure how you’re twisting that into a right vs left comparison. Even if the PG&E assets were publicly owned or owned through a co-op the utility would still be liable. However I do agree that utilities should be owned by the citizens. I’m supportive of large co-ops but not as much so with publicly/municipally owned systems. Those often (with exception) become politicized and underfunded over time.

Sorry. Can’t meet you here. The people companies harm aren’t always their customers. Sometimes it’s the communities they reside in. And if those people are low income, it can take years or even decades for the wheels of justice to turn. Think DuPont. Or PG&E. They were both fully aware of the damage they were causing and lined up their legal strategy in advance. Meanwhile, their customers bought their products for years none the wiser. I’ve walked the road of purist libertarianism for a long time and I get it completely. What pulled me away (and pulls most people away) is when they themselves finally become victims of spreadsheet driven suits working for the bottom line at all costs. Companies, especially large ones, don’t generally work to maintain safety standards. They work to not get caught.
I moved two S19s into my house and have only turned the heat on this winter for a few hours when we had visitors over late. Both have made more USD than they cost in electricity and at 6am when we come downstairs it’s 84’F. The upstairs stays a toasty 74’F all day. Free heat plus profits. Respectfully, “wasting power” is a broad stroke argument that ignores details. Go ahead and ban mining in NE USA where the grid is antiquated or could blackout like in 2003, or in CA where politics has screwed PG&E because of wildfires and poor policy, but not where stranded energy exists or excess capacity from nuclear power plants that can’t shut off and they dump electricity in the Earth. May as well use a SW desert mentality and claim “wasting water” for areas in Appalachia.
