I am not bullish on software companies as an investor. Very few people realize it took from 2000 to 2016 or 16 years of patient waiting to get to a point of POSITIVE GAIN not stagnant. You look at Adobe. It tried to get into cloud storage and right now I am not sure why it tanked so much. Software companies does not make anything. Hardware chip, server, cloud services I can understand. I own MSFT from 2 accounts. Cost basis was $46 from a larger balance. The other account cost basis is $346 much smaller. I will not be surprised it will be under water from #2.

Except not for positions held. So, the deal is here you'd be able to take a short term cap gains LOSS, while adding to the profits of (ostensibly) a long term capital GAIN. A wash sale tolls the long term capital gain, and disallows harvesting the loss to offset short term gains which are taxed at a higher rate.

Couple things! Finviz as my resource to start my research, they have a great news watch lists. From there, start looking into the sector that it applies to, GPT works great here. Ask about the changes that have been occurring in the industry (any new laws, any big swings in major players, etc). From there, I use the RSI of SPY for that week (since I rarely have the time to stare at the screen every minute observing the changes). If the RSI is below 40, call, above 65, put. Most importantly, ALWAYS TAKE THE 20% GAIN. Sure you miss out on some meat, but Id rather be well fed on a 1 day gamble than roast myself later. Rinse and repeat

Two things. Number one is historical trends and understanding why a stock dips or rises. Second is, as many others have pointed out. "Vibes". When people panic, just hold, it will be okay. When people are buying, set a peak and stick to it. A gain is a gain. If you missed out on "THE BIG GAIN", that's okay. There will be more chances in the future, and the gain can be re-invested for additional growth. Dunno, works for me. My stocks are not part of my budget; it's not part of my future plans. I will never be at a point where I NEED it, that's what my ETFs are for, so I'm not scared to hold for a company I believe in.

If you had put in any money at the trough of liberation day, you are now up around 35% since that time. We could have a 50% drop, and you’d still only be down -15% with then a much better time on the upswing getting back to green. That appreciation to the bond market would have offset a lot of the equities losses. A 20/80 portfolio had the potential to actually GAIN money on Friday, while equities dropped. Being cash is even more shortsighted assuming you are 40 or younger. You should look at graphs of what happens if you only invest with a blue presidency or a red one. Contrast that not investing during both and you see how massive the losses are for being cash for the durations versus just being a long term holder. Theres even data showing that buying at an all time high actually outperforms DCAing over a longer period. The common theme is long term holding, and I’ve got time to wait. It’s entirely why I made a section about age and circumstance equally being as important to deciding how risk adverse to be in portfolio construction.

There is no free money if thats what you are asking. Eventually when the position gets closed you will be facing a realized GAIN on the final contract, you could defer that to be a bit later or sooner by rolling, but you want to keep in mind that if you hop across tax years and have bunch of losses in one year you cant use, but have gains in the next year from essentially the same position this wont benefit you, quite the opposite (although you should check with a tax advisor for your actual tax situation).

I started running numbers on this, but I have a question. Your GAIN is $48k but your total proceeds must be way higher. What are you doing with the rest of the sale proceeds? There could be lots of reasons - you are going to have to research yourself. But some reasons could be a convertible arbitrage opportunity - I think GAIN is BDC so maybe there are convertibles out there. GAIN also as a BDC - are they over exposed to interest rate risk? Perhaps their dividend is at risk because of bad investments. Check their Net Investment Income trends. BDC's are analyzed for valuation differently than a product/service company so you have to take that into account as well.

If it goes up, and you don't sell, you indeed haven't gained any money. What your shares are "worth" is meaningless if you aren't selling them and literally changes moment to moment. That's why it's called an UNREALIZED GAIN. It's not real money until it's in your bank account. It's stupid to agonize over the potential value of stocks that you haven't sold, and have no intention of selling. (\* Leaving aside more complicated things like borrowing against shares etc... Housing inventory in my area is at an all time high. We've got people with their housing on the market for 2 months. Houses are dropping like +10% to try and get sold but none are moving. There is a 2M house being sold for 1.35M I'm looking at, and it's been on the market 2 months. Several houses I was watching that were sold are now back on the market, the descriptions include along the lines of "BUYERS LOSS YOUR GAIN - Buyer could not go through due to job situation". I live in a tech heavy port. It's not looking good if this continues.

Wage growth was 3.5% in 2019, and now it's .8% with a huge price hike on the horizon....and you're acting like we're supposed to be thankful with seeing a .8% wage gain, which was a ~78% YOY reduction from before the pandemic? Yeah, let's try to paint 3.5% wage growth to .8% wage growth (before tariffs even hit lol) as a good thing that we should be thankful for. Have you even said thank you once for your .8% wage gain?
