LVHI, dropped only 8% during 2022 bear market vs S&P 28% & actually gained for the first half of it.

I'd look at foreign etfs / Closed end funds since the dollar is quite weak and a lot of foreign blue chip companies yeild more. Moreover if you have a lot of US exposure, then it's a good idea to get more exposure here anyway.  My personal fave is LVHI.

Surprisingly, my intl large cap value (LVHI) & intl corporate bond (IBND) etfs are green today, probably due to declining DXY. Gold miner (GDX & GDXU) etfs were red today but they've been REALLY green for the past week & due for a pullback. Unsurprisingly, 3xshorts (SOXS, SQQQ & SPXS) were very green today & for the past 2 weeks.

I do a multi-factor portfolio with a mix of momentum, quality, tech and size/value. SPHQ, SPMO, XMMO, IDMO, IGV, SMH, AVMV, AVUV, AVDV, LVHI, even split between funds. 20% quality, 30% size/value, 20% tech, 30% momentum. 70% US 30% international. 60% large cap, 20% mid cap, 20% small cap.

I've been doing this strategy for about 2 years 70% TECL 30% low volatility ETFs; SVOL, DXJ, LVHI. With the goal of if the market does crash the low volatility stocks shouldn't crash much or at least 3x less than TECL. This allowed me to sell most of my low volatility ETFs and buy TECL at the super low $42 ! I've since sold some TECL and I'm at an 80/20 mix. If I never sell/convert into other ETFs I won't have any money to buy the next dip lol

5 year horizon till retirement but also a long retirement, so lets take a long term view. You should buy the whole US market at least, SCHB or VTI or whatever. Its recommended to hold 20-30% international equities. Im not saying VXUS since its not my favorite. I prefer VEU (intl large and mid caps) + AVDV and AVES/DGS, some dude a few days ago likes LVHI for its lower vol large cap value approach. Whatever you choose, *long term*, international diversification makes the portfolio more robust, hedges country and currency idiosyncracies, and is one of the only free lunches in investing. 10-30% of your portfolio should be long treasury bonds. This will hedge your fear of a market correction or recession. When stocks crash fast, flight to safety assets like long treasury bonds spike up. Historically this method of holding 10-30% long T bonds like ZROZ along with equities like VTI or VT outperforms 100% equities by a lot, with far smaller drawdowns.

I think it unlikely you can spot a pattern in time. I also think it is wise to own some international and owing it is not betting against America. It's diversifying your portfolio. One thing I am still pondering is if active managed funds might be worth considering for international. An example is GQFPX (U.S. and non-us) vs. LVHI (international, but also hedged a bit) vs. DIVI
