You’re leaving ~17% on the table. 5% was good when inflation was ~2%, but as the other person pointed out the S&P has been chugging along just over 20%. I can’t even fathom the difference with compounding over a long period of time. PSA - always research the returns against index performance. Your fund manager is charging fees, which is artificially lowering your % return that is more or less hidden (it’s disclosed, but not sure if we all read this stuff). So in reality if you did the same things on your own, or invested directly into an index fund, not only would you have exponentially increased your return over time, you also would reap exponential increases from the fees you no longer pay over time. When comparing fees across plans, it may not look like much. 0.2 vs 0.02. Don’t get lulled in here. That is an order of magnitude (10x) times more money you are losing to fees, annually. Money managers don’t beat the market. If they claim - as them to show their historical homework.

I like VNQ but I would consider just looking at its largest holdings and buy some of them. I own AMT, O, DLR, PSA and STAG. I leave the dividends on Drip while I am still working and have these in tax deferred accounts because of the generous dividend yield.
This is a good PSA to get kids investing as early as possible. The S&P has been a wealth generator for almost every 5+ year investment window ever. The upside is tremendous. But if your first experience is to put your money in and see it drop, then you will be skeptical. Get them in early and let them see some wins. Let them see how it snaps back after it falls. Good luck with your wife. She should know that the S&P could fall off a cliff the day after you get in, but you just have to ride it out. You only lose money if you sell. Most years the market is at all time highs, so don't be afraid to buy today at all time highs. I tell people that the stock market is like a casino, except that you are the house. You can lose in the short term, but over time you're going to rake it in as long as you dont sell. It's one of the only investments where you can buy the exact same things as the billionaires.

PSA: EBITDA is just an easy proxy to calculate that gives you CFOps, but removes interest expense and taxes to make it agnostic against capital structure and tax regime.
