> As for #2, it is naive to think Apple isn’t investing in AI. It just won’t be in the form of a standalone product. Rather it will be integrated into currently existing products/services such as Siri, Home, Spotlight, Apple TV, Maps, Camera/Photos, etc, in a way that simply makes them easier or more useful, but without most people even realizing AI is being used. Applied AI essentially. LOL, what the heck do you think has been powering your Google searches for like a decade? There is a reason that the PageRank algorithm has been de-prioritizing backlinks in their SEO tabulation, and it isn't for their health. The Google Spider is essentially a human at this stage. It can read any unstructured piece of information on the WWW and connect it across many different dimensions to respond to a user's query. Hell, their TPUs are now on version 5. Those chips are what have been driving Google searches for a long time now. Meanwhile, Microsoft announces their first version and everyone goes apeshit? Not to put too fine a point on it, but Google has been mopping the floor with the competition in AI research and publishing since Sam Altman was burning tens of millions at Loopt.

>Bitcoin is not crypto. I didn't say it was. > Fiat currency is still far more useful for fraud than bitcoin. Besides my point. What I'm concerned about is the non-fraud uses, which is where Bitcoin and other crypto falls short. > Oh but you can. You can use it to purchase from any store very easily. In fact, even services like PayPal have bitcoin integrated for easy transactions anywhere Paypal is accepted. Not in the US. I can't use crypto at Target or Walmart or the grocery or even Amazon. > Segwit is low in fees and nearly instantaneous. Strike is also focused on fast tracking lightning network development. I don't know what these are and I don't want to need to know to make simple transactions. TradFi just works. > Losing your keys is not "easy to do" History and the amount of locked addresses disagrees with you. > The internet was absolutely not easy to use immediately I didn't say it was "easy" I said it was useful. WWW was developed before internet was even publicly available through ISPs and was immediately useful. e-commerce began just a few years after the internet was available to consumers through ISPs. Amazon, Google, Yahoo, Ebay, and many others were all operating useful products in less than a decade after the internet became available to consumers. Smartphones went from 0 to near 100% market saturation in developed countries within 10 years. Crypto adoption is glacial in comparison. If it was actually useful for something people would be using it by now.

I was convinced that the internet with WWW was going to turn the world on its head. The second prediction is closer to the mark. We have had chatbots since Weizenbaum's Eliza around 1965. It came up in an e-mail; I thought about it seriously as I do make a living as a web developer and systems administrator. I read the e-mail on Wix, and thought about conversations I have had with colleagues about content management system (CMS) managed websites. In those conversations, nobody mentions Wix, Webflow or Weebly (also known as "WWW" which is ironically an antithesis of "world wide web" based on WWW co's terrible performance lol) Heck, hardly any mention of Squarespace - they seem to be doing well. Everyone mentions WordPress as the be-all, end-all CMS for web development.

> Ngl I think you have a misunderstanding on how these monopolistic companies actually extract value I am old and been involved with the Internet since 1986. So think I am pretty familiar with how it works. I do NOT think you get why browsers are so valuable. You are looking at things way too simply. Browsers are all about protecting the things accessed through browsers. That is why they are so valuable and why Google winning the browser space was so important to them. They wanted a level playing field. > Microsoft makes money on licensing the operating system on computer that run on an architecture called x86. This is a really bizarre statement. First, Windows is NOT limited to X86. It also runs on ARM and there was even implementations on MIPS. But the architecture makes ZERO difference. It could run on the architecture the architect grew up on, VAX, and it would make no different for this conversation. So why even include? > That protocol is call RISC a Jimmy Crickets! RISC is NOT a protocol. It is a type of architecture. It is where instructions are fixed length so it is a lot easier to design pipelines such that you execute multiple instructions in parallel. But it is also an architecture that has been mostly adopted by Intel for X86 with a layer put on top of microcode that ties the reduced set of instructions together. But against this has NOTHING to do with the discussion at hand. This entire post is kind of bizarre. > You think google makes money on chrome? Google makes a fortune because of Chrome. It was so smart on them to do it. I loved it. Because at the time NOBODY thought there was an opportunity for a new browser. I am old. I built a white hardware Next machine just so I could use WorldWideWeb (WWW). Used Lynx on my Vax station as could not run Next. I know this is going to be very confusing to you. Because of the name of the first browser overlapping with what the web was called. I then moved to NCSA when it was in beta. Then Netscape, .... > No, they actually make the vast majority of revenue from from online advertising infrastructure. Google would have far greater expensive if they did not have Chrome. So yes Chrome makes them money. A lot of money. As does Android. > Therefore enabling all kinds of self dealing and anti-competitive practices. We finally got to something in your post that gets to the issue at hand. Please name these "anti-competitive practices"? You do realize the biggest source of income from Google they do NOT set the price or have anything to do with the price paid for the ad? Maybe this will help with your education. https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6366577?hl=en So if there were 10 providers of search and they all used an auction then it would be the same price.

I am among the least cool people ever (software engineers), but what's so cool about coming late to a speculative asset? The internet exploded in popularity after the WWW was introduced. It changed almost everything about society and the economy. Bitcoin has made some early adopters and whales very rich. Since then it has been used for scams, buying OxyContin and paying ransom. It's been 14 years. That's an *eternity* in technology. What action is left in crypto/Web3 is mostly centered on Ethereum and other newer chains. Bitcoin is outdated and slow. I took about 2 days of time to rebalance and reset my portfolio by hand picking and creating two stock baskets. One replicates a blue chip ETF which have typically returned 14-17% CAGR over the past 10 years. The other is a mid cap to smaller large cap company basket with 39 hand picked stocks which averaged 13-15% CAGR over the past 10 years. I sold two of my allocations KO, and Danahar and traded them out for some more experimental and riskier stocks BBAR and WWW which is a different type of investing that takes more effort. Thanks tho

> once something like ChatGPT becomes even more mainstream in a few years, "mainstream" for what? Do you know what problem ChatGPT solves? Have you bothered solving complex task of any sort on it? Not high school/college assignments, *real* world problems? What is so special about it that somehow it cripples one of the cornerstones of modern WWW, biggest Data Science enterprise in human history, a company that is at the foundation of APIs necessary in advertising, geolocation, data mining, and the most commonly used OS in mobile and platforms beyond PC? Just because you can have a coherent chat with a glorified data aggregator, does not mean it is an "existential threat" to a company that basically paved the way for all this before you even learnt how to use the potty. > Currently, costs for an AI such as GPT-3 are so low that high usage would still only cost a few dollars a month for a single user. *what usage?* What exactly did your brilliant "I-am-another-Burry" autism discover that no one else did? Give Page and Brin a call, they might happily through a few millions worth of change if they lazily shake their pockets. > AIs make finding answers to questions way more efficient. ...do you know what you're talking about? So for people who are too lazy to read Wikipedia articles, they can just go to ChatGPT, write a poorly formed question with their clumsy, cheeto-crusted fingers, and get a generic answer with standard disclaimer of, "there is still lot of research to be done in this particular field." If you had really bothered to spend some time with ChatGPT, it is just a highly complex probability machine, predicting the most likely next word after a series of words have been created in a sentence. There are standard RNNs for that, but they have not sampled the millions of texts that ChatGPT did and then have the interface to be fed a prompt. If you think this barebones infrastructure is somehow "challenging" any industry, then you're no better than those "End is Nigh" junkies running around at Times Square. This isn't some "earth shattering" "A" or even and "I". It's a very fast implementation of standard statistical learning methods. It's really great that it can be done, this was an incremental step in interface design. But if you think that this somehow constitutes an "existential" threat to a behemoth of data science, internet and technology like Alphabet/Google, you really don't know much about tech - just another schmuck who watched way too many movies and now thinks every miniscule increment in technology is, "OH MY GAAWWWWD, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING" scene from a movie. > These costs are likely to diminish even further as the technology improves and becomes more popular. Uh huh, and through what magic spell does that happen? When [Moore's Law is gradually dying it's slow death](https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/09/do-expensive-nvidia-graphics-cards-foretell-the-death-of-moores-law/), [cost of SRAM increasing](https://www.techspot.com/news/97000-cpu-gpu-sram-caches-not-shrinking-which-could.html), and the [already performance challenges of reaching few-nm node processes](https://www.utmel.com/blog/categories/integrated%20circuit/is-there-a-limit-to-the-chip-process-node), there is no easy scaling happening, "any time in the future" -- it's interesting how it is always something relegated down to that elusive "future", where all problems will magically resolve themselves. > I can go on and on, but essentially I believe that these AIs are still in their hype phase and as they become more mainstream, Google Search will no longer be as popular. You really didn't go on at all, just rubbed two brain cells and blurted out that as a "thought". > However, almost 60% of Alphabet's revenue comes from Google Search. While Alphabet was previously a money printer of a company, this threat makes it no longer one of the safest blue-chip bets. The only reason Alphabet, and every other company, is going to suffer is because of rising interest rates and increasing costs of servicing debt, which will force all companies to mass layoffs and scaling back investments in R&D. Congrats, you just managed to spot the obvious happening for months, but then conveniently managed to miss the mark. The stupidity of people here is really something to wonder. Like monkeys in a zoo, thumping their chest every other second thinking they are the alphas, while still sitting in a cage, screeching and hurling feces.

Yeah, don’t get too hung up on the shitcoins. Web 3 is supposed to be decentralized…as WWW was. Today all of the data is in the hands of a few and look how well that’s going./s

Web 3 literally means the third evolution of the internet. So…you’re saying the internet isn’t going to catch on. Got it. Jokes aside, I agree that the nascent developments were seeing that call themselves Web 3 won’t likely succeed. Neither did those avatar chat rooms when WWW first came out. The internet will 100% evolve into something better than it is today. Let’s just agree on that. Call it Web3 or whatever you like.

The most common way to dismiss the internet in the 90’s was to claim that no one would use it. As Nobel prize winner Paul Krugman famously said: “most people have nothing to say to each other!” Secondary claim was that the tools were too difficult to use. IP protocols were invented in the 60s and TCP/IP protocol in the 70s. LANs in the 80s and WWW in the 90s. The internet evolved over nearly 40 years. Protocols like Bitcoin are also evolving—with no central authority or government sponsorship—and arguably much faster than the internet.

If you think the entirety of that $1.2 trillion market is just BTC token, then arguing with you is like debating the merits of Web 2.0 (the foundation of current iteration of WWW, btw) with someone who still uses Windows 95 to log on to HTTP websites. [No matter in what detail it is explained to you](https://old.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/ysy8ha/bloodbath_in_%C3%A7rypto_a_good_sign_for_the_equity/iw1x2oq/), you'll refuse to learn. That's fine too, people were crying about internet being, "just a fad" back in 90s too.

Zuck is betting big on all things Metaverse, and at the end of the day, has almost total control over META. I'd consider being long META essentially being long Metaverse/Zuck. Metaverses (metaversae? ii?) may be a paradigm shift like WWW was the internet (Not too many people know about Gopher or the other protocols that were semi popular prior to the modern web). They may be a short-lived fad like Second-Life/Habbo Hotel. I wouldnt touch META unless you're okay with that gamble. Zuck and some other big names are betting the house on it, but it wouldnt be the first time a rich guy's ego and dreams get in the way of reality.

You know you can make your own dumb web page and say whatever the fuck you want on it and host it on your air fryer from your house, right? It's very simple to set up a web server and start talking shit. The whole point of the WWW was decentralization and you dweebs that never learned how it worked all gravitated towards the walled gardens and then clutch pearls when a business that needs to sell ads to KO can't risk having those beverage banners appearing on the @killAllTheJews feed.

That's the wrong way to look at it. Selling headsets is just a minor part of it. The true value comes from controlling the main medium for human communication. To get an accurate picture of what Facebook wants, go back 40 years in time, imagine that Facebook already exists and they get to choose how HTTP works, how browsers will be build, how content is displayed, because how the WWW works. Fast forward 40 years and imagine that Facebook got a good portion of all revenue generated by anything related to the web. That's what they are going for. Same impact the internet had in human society, but with Facebook at the center. I truly hope they fail spectacularly, because this sounds terrible for anyone besides Zuck, but implying they are aiming to recover losses by selling headsets is simply wrong.
