Good question Merged mining solves network security problem. The same hardware mining Litecoin can simultaneously, with 0 extra electricity or hardware, secure any number of smaller chains on the same algorithm (Scrypt). This isn't theoretical, the AuxPoW protocol has supported it since 2011(?) (Namecoin has been merge-mining with Bitcoin ever since, with no changes to BTC's code), and today on Scrypt, LTC + DOGE + BELLS + PEP all do it at once. So: Bitcoin was technically capable of this from the start, all the merge-mining logic lives on the auxiliary chain's side, not the parent chain's. And yes, in theory you could merge-mine a "ton of tokens" at once, the protocol allows it. In practice, the bottleneck isn't cryptography, it's pool software (has to handle x different chains) and economics (each additional token is marginal benefit for the miner). But here's also a part merged mining doesn't solve: it secures the network against attacks, but says nothing about how fairly the coin launched.... Creator can premine or instamine, meaning allocate themselves a big chunk of supply before or right after launch, and then still plug in merge mining later to look "secure" and legitimate. Hashrate defends against rewriting block history, not against dishonest distribution at launch. Those are two completely separate things, and both need to be checked independently. That's why, for any merge mined coin, I look at two things: who's securing the network, and who actually holds the coins. Pepecoin checks both boxes: 100% of supply mined publicly from block one, no premine, no ICO, and merge mining was added only after the fair launch, not as a way to disguise one.
Litecoin is an altcoin, and if there’s one thing I think is worth watching long-term, it’s merge mining. If you’re mining LTC, you can also mine DOGE using the same Scrypt work — and that’s not where it ends. There are more blockchains in the ecosystem, like PEP, BELLS, etc. You’re not using extra electricity or hardware to secure them; the same hashpower can secure multiple chains. So, I might be wrong here, but there’s even a project called Scrypt Strategy that’s building a treasury around these Scrypt coins No idea where this whole thing will be in a few years, but it’s definitely something I’ll be watching.
