In this system, borrowing works by putting Bitcoin that you own up as collateral. Say BTC is worth $100,000. Instead of selling 5 BTC to buy a $500,000 house you would put up 5 BTC as collateral and receive a $500,000 loan. There is very little risk for the lender because they are holding your BTC. If you default they just keep or sell the BTC. This means you have no credit risk which means a lower interest rate for you. The scenario differs if BTC is in a bull market or a bear market. If the value of BTC goes down the lender can raise your interest rate, sell some of your BTC to bring your loan to value ratio down, or, you can put up more BTC as collateral to bring your loan to value ratio down. If BTC increases in value (which it tends to do since it has finite supply and scarcity built in) then the BTC you put up as collateral is now worth more than the amount of the original loan. BTC increasing in value is causing your loan to value ratio to go down. This meas your risky-ness as a borrower is going down and as a result your interest rate goes down. In this scenario, your BTC appreciating means a lower interest rate which means lower monthly payments and more money in your pocket each month. Or, you decide you want to start selling some of the BTC held as collateral. Instead of paying your mortgage for the month you can sell some of your BTC to cover the mortgage for that month, freeing up the money you would have spent on the mortgage to go towards something else. The BTC you put up as collateral is appreciating and working for you, giving you purchasing power and improving your quality of life. In either scenario the lender is making money in the form of interest. If you don't have $500,000 worth of BTC now just keep saving and waiting. BTC will appreciate faster than home prices increase. Once you have enough you can put up the BTC as collateral and buy the house. In CJ's example he sold 100 BTC to buy his house but today he would only be able to get 10 BTC for his house. Priced in terms of BTC housing is getting more affordable as time goes on because BTC is becoming more valuable.

Yes, there are many solutions out there. They all involve moving the bitcoin off-chain so you can transact without a trail on the Bitcoin blockchain. Some offer more privacy than others. It really just depends on what you're trying to achieve. For really strong privacy, a good mix followed by one of the above-mentioned solutions to remove CJ history is really effective. You can experiment with these yourself by following your own transactions on a block explorer. For instance, with Lightning, when you open your channel, view that funding transaction on the explorer. Then, when you swap out to a new address using Boltz, see if you can link that new address to your channel funding address. You won't be able to because the transactions linking the two took place somewhere else, off-chain.

It does not run coinjoin unless you tell it to do that. UTXOs will be uniform size for the most part. If you send them all into one address in HW wallet it will be clear that one is a single owner but not clear which pre CJ coins they were before. Ideally you want to avoid consolidating them. I believe Wasabi works with HW wallets so you can do CJ right in there without moving anything later. Some of the UTXOs will invariably combine when/if you need to pay for something that requires more than what one utxo can cover. RTFM fully to understand the steps and tradeoffs.

This just shows how inadequate some of those detections are. Wasabi coinjoins are 200+ inputs and 200+ outputs. Those are much more suspect. No need to consolidate. Your btc is not flagged as anything. Some block explorer throwing "looks like CJ" on many-to-many transaction is no big whoop. If you are paying someone they won't care.

A transfer of everything would look like multiple combined into 1 address. Transaction history is visible in blockchain explorer. Coinjoin is a mixing action. You do CJ first and end up with one or more UTXOs of same value. Combining them again defeats the purpose of CJ quite a bit. Sending everything from one wallet to address in another wallet will end up with everyone in one UTXO in final address. Test your transactions. Test paying to multiple addresses at once with electrum. Test CJ with wasabiwallet. Test recovering wallets from backup.

Just clarifying, the Supply Chain attack should only apply to users buying from unauthorized retailers. To my knowledge there are zero reports of someone buying from Trezor directly (as you should) and getting a hacked device. On the second, just don't use Coinjoin through Trezor. There is no expectation that you will be censored etc by Trezor, and you can use other CJ operations.

I still don’t understand. Let’s say you have 0.1 btc in a wallet and you CJ those coins, won’t the wallet still show a balance of 0.1 btc but the coins that are in that wallet won’t be able to be easily tracked back to an original true source like a KYC exchange? There are anecdotes here and there but no official announcement anywhere that I can see. One option to "bleach" your CJ is to flush them through LN. You could use that instead of CJ or in conjunction with CJ. Hard to track through LN (by design), so the CJ history is lost as well.

Your transfer coin to an exchange wallet is confirmed by the same network as every other bitcoin blockchain transaction, can you give me examples of "a lot of exchanges won't take"? The only time I can see exchanges denying coin would be tainted coins from stolen sources

But the problem with CJ is that a lot of exchanges won't take coins that have a CJ history. So the fiat off ramp becomes problematic in those cases. I guess I don't understand how/why chain analysis can't mark coins that have been through LN similarly tainted and refuse to accept those also? Also when you say it may not be worth it, LN xns are cheap aren't they?

I've never sold any bitcoin but Cash App threatened to ban me for sending coin I bought there to a coinjoin. It wasn't specifically *for* using a CJ, it was because one of the participants in the CJ was apparently a sanctioned North Korean exchanging and Cash App is monitoring for that. I think they're mainly trying to avoid the appearance of facilitating money laundering. Not exactly the answer you're looking for but hopefully a helpful anecdote

If you're a strong bitcoiner who ultimately believes it will become the global monetary standard, then you probably don't care because you believe all trade will eventually occur using sats directly in exchange for goods and services - in which case there won't be any need for exchanges anyway - no need to sell sats for fiat because all fiat would be dead.

I’ll accept this critique. My whole life is one ditch or the other. I don’t have a lot of moderate views. So when I take in new information, often it makes me flip my opinion completely. I can work on this. I have already tried to soften conviction with anything price related. I always say “I think x will happen in regards to price”. Much to my detriment in the past I was overconfident and I learned that lesson specifically when it comes to predicting price points or timelines. So I will CJ tinue to work on this. SBF stuff is real. When people step back and take in the gravity of what occurred here I won’t look nearly as unhinged… well some of the times anyway. I can try to find a better balance tho for sure. Thanks for the suggestion. But I think with XRP, I did what a lot of people do with me: they read some tweets, memes, posts, etc. that push a view point like XRP Bad and took someone else’s opinion as their own without really having their own experience researching or interacting with. It’s a way of compartmentalizing really. And that’s what I did. My friends didnt like it so I didn’t. It was actually the first altcoin I ever owned and they made me embarrassed to own it. So instead of keeping tabs on the project i went back to those same talking points for years without noticing they all changed. Many anti-XRP people are the same way. Talking points from 2018 that are no longer valid.

CoinJoin is just a way of doing a transaction. You can get a bunch of bitcoiners together and do a CJ on a bench in the park, over email or Discord. Whirlpool, a CJ "service" is really only a decentralised protocol. Wallet software that "speaks" this protocol gets together over the network and executes Whirlpool mixing rounds without an intermediary. TC is open source but the fact that it was deployed as a smart contract means it can be targeted. Sure, you can deploy copies but they will not attract as much liquidity as the "official" one (which is still available, just not over clearnet). TL;DR: Tornado Cash is *nothing like* CoinJoin.

Wasabi wallet uses a controversial coin join implementation. 1.x of their CJ was riddled with so many bugs they just gave up on it. But never acknowledged any of those bugs. Now they work directly with chain analysis (not the proper noun). tl;dr: use Sparrow or Samourai Wallet, not Wasabi.
