The free healthcare in Canada isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s free, yes, so if you have cancer and need super expensive chemo and ongoing treatment it’s literally a life saver. However, if you have a chronic non-life-threatening condition you’re fucked. I go to Canada quite often and I have friends there that I’ve waited over a year for an MRI because they can’t walk due to pain. The MRI is free, but you can and will wait a loooong time for it, if your condition doesn’t meet the criteria to be seen quickly. This isn’t just for MRIs. It’s basically true for any non-terminal condition.

"To pretend that mankind is only capable of innovation BECAUSE of capitalism is wildly absurd." I didn't say that. What I'm saying is socialism tends to remove much of the incentive for innovation. Innovation requires risk. Why take massive risk for a far lower reward that socialism offers? "China is NOT a socialist country at all, I think people often confuse socialism with authoritarian dictatorships." That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that it was only when China turned toward capitalism that the quality of life improved. Hundreds of millions lifted out of poverty by giving them the chance to go succeed with fewer barriers. By the way, I live in China (and am Canadian, funny enough). "If you and I need a knee surgery, and you are a multi millionaire and I am broke as a joke, you and I get the same surgery by the same surgeon, at the same hospital." That isn't what happens in practice. In practice, Canada has one of the worst healthcare systems in the world in contrast to what we pay. I'm by no means rich, but just a few years ago when the Canadian healthcare system REFUSED to give me an MRI, I was forced to go to the US and have it done. Guess what? I took that MRI back to Canada to show that I require surgery on my ACL, and was told to get on a 6-12 month waiting list for an MRI. I asked why I need an MRI when I have one in my hand. They said it's protocol. When I asked how long I could expect surgery after the MRI? They said 12-18 months. That's our system. It isn't better, it actually fucking sucks. That's why most Canadians who can afford it end up going to the US for any important healthcare. That's what I did, and I'm by no means wealthy. But to be told to wait the better part of 2-3 years so that I can function properly again is a slap in the face. You have an idea of socialism that you like, but again, in practice it is a terrible system. Every example you have given has IMO been a mark against socialism and for capitalism (or some other hopefully better system). The fact you bring up NASA vs SpaceX, China's rise which correlates with adopting capitalism, and Canada's healthcare system which notoriously drives well-off people to another country for surgeries and the like is quite telling. If you don't mind, why not just mention one socialist country that has succeeded? Why not mention one socialist program that actually performs better than private? It's government led, inefficient, and generally corrupt.

> Yes, which is why the US has the highest infant mortality rate, the lowest life expectancies and the worst health outcomes out of 11 comparable wealthy countries. Wait. Break those stats down by ethnicity. White Americans, when normalized for BMI, have the same outcomes as white Europeans. Europe is a lot more white than America - if that's your argument then sure, yeah, I agree with you. If your argument is instead "Americans are way more fat" then, yeah, I also agree. But somehow I suspect neither is your argument. >All those extra MRI machines are used to rack up bills The average wait time for an MRI in Canada is 4 months, with 10% being more than 8 months. The average wait time for an MRI in the US is 2 weeks. You can get an MRI done for as little as $400 with zero insurance, you literally cannot pay for an MRI in Canada. It's very obvious to me you don't actually know any stats to back up your beliefs. >The SIPP survey suggests people in the United States owe at least $195 billion in medical debt. Approximately 16 million people (6% of adults) in the U.S. owe over $1,000 in medical debt and 3 million people (1% of adults) owe medical debt of more than $10,000. That's...not a lot? $1,000 is less than 2% of the average US household income. Scandinavians have more than **100%** more debt relative to income than Americans. Your article if anything is a huge positive for the American healthcare system. >Sure you can best in the world gold plated service, if you can afford it Most people can afford it, because insurance is a perk given on top of salaries. Only about 7% of the country has no health insurance, and Medicare/Medicaid exists for them. Your worldview is made up of reddit propaganda, none of it is true.

>That's because Americans have far more healthcare per capita than every other country. Yes, which is why the US has the highest infant mortality rate, the lowest life expectancies and the [worst health outcomes out of 11 comparable wealthy countries](https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/fund-reports/2021/aug/mirror-mirror-2021-reflecting-poorly). Wait. It is not even close, the US is terribly performing compared to peers. All those extra MRI machines are used to rack up bills, not improve outcomes. It is hugely inefficient to have more than you need. >People going into crippling medical debt is very rare, but people on this site spread the myth that it happens frequently. You realism that there are actual statistics on this? [We find that 23 million people (nearly 1 in 10 adults) owe significant medical debt.](https://www.healthsystemtracker.org/brief/the-burden-of-medical-debt-in-the-united-states) The SIPP survey suggests people in the United States owe at least $195 billion in medical debt. Approximately 16 million people (6% of adults) in the U.S. owe over $1,000 in medical debt and 3 million people (1% of adults) owe medical debt of more than $10,000. I swear people in the US have Stockholm syndrome regarding their health care system. Sure you can best in the world gold plated service, if you can afford it, on all other metrics you are vastly worse than any other peer country. Thousands of Americans even live with treatable blindness. Hell [more than half of sightless children in the United States did not have to lose their vision, according to a new study](https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2022-10-05/half-of-cases-of-childhood-blindness-in-u-s-didnt-have-to-happen). >Yes, which results in many Americans having out of pocket costs because in an emergency you dont get to pick where you go A lot of states have provisions protecting you there, actually. In emergency scenarios out-of-pocket expenses typically have to be covered. Not the law in every state, but it's something fixable. >Some one getring cancer then work "letting them go" is a classic. Sure, but then you can just purchase insurance the normal way (including using COBRA to extend your existing insurance). >Hell people get injured Every insurance plan has sudden injury insurance, either baked in or addable for a nominal charge (we're talking maybe $10/month). >The US pays twice as much per person as peer healthcare systems That's because Americans have far more healthcare per capita than every other country. There are 4x MRI devices per capita in the US compared to Canada. 3x as many hospital beds per capita than the UK. Around 2x doctors per capita compared to other Western nations. People going into crippling medical debt is very rare, but people on this site spread the myth that it happens frequently.

Magnetic resonance, the technology, was invented long before the use we call MRI became a thing. Isn’t this similar. Satoshi I figured out a novel use by combining several technologies that existed already. His claim to fame, I believe, is having the vision to put them all together

Well explain it to me then. Insulin tests, cholesterol tests, t-cell tests for people with immune problems, thyroid tests, liver and kidney function tests, leaps and bounds in the last 20 years in all these areas. Still no seratonin tests after well over 20 years of Prozac marketing. It’s a Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor. But there’s no test before or after to determine if the levels changed or were affected at all. It’s “how do you feel it’s working?” And if you’re still sad they just up the dose. Still not working? Let’s mix in this other drug that we “think” might help. Lol. No blood tests except for Lithium and that’s even a maybe. No MRI’s, no PET scans, no blood work. 5 smiley faces to describe your mood today. 😂 But they collect payment at the psychiatrist for medication management AND at the therapy office weekly, biweekly, or monthly. It’s a genius business model. If only the tarot card readers could have gotten prescription privileges. Cuz that’s what it is. My brother was in the ER a few times in the past couple of years and the wait times were hours. If your referring to wait times for urgent cases…my mum waited 5 weeks (which was a cancellation) for a mastectomy and trying to get a brain MRI…well that’s another story. But on the flip side my father had extremely quick and excellent care at Stoke for heart valve replacement. But I do think the NHS is an incredible service with extremely dedicated staff…no doubt about that. If I had to choose between the two…probably would choose the UKs system if it could be perfected some what.

We will just sit at home, like many do now, play video games, order food delivery, and expect the government to take care of us with fake money.

My wife get's a yearly MRI and it's free. And we can get it in a day or two at worst. And it's always a top of the line machine.

We don't have to pay thousands just to get a freaking ambulance ride? I got an MRI today for 30 euros. Yeah I had to wait like 5 months to get my place in line but still. The paid option if you want to go asap is about 350. I'm not even going to look up the US prices but I can imagine a few zeros in the mix already. And healthcare is just one of the things. How about education? Insane college fees that you pay off half your life is crazy, yet most of you put up with all of this. I mean you don't have a choice aprat from some /r/COMPLETEANARCHY revolution so I don't blame yall at all, it just sucks.

Yeah... Instantaneous information transfer is where it's at, lol. All that time waiting for remote radiologist to interpret and send in MRI results would be cut dramatically!

You seem to fundamentally misunderstand economics. Yes, it would all be happy if we would live in small communities taking care of ourselves, having a goat and a small potato farm. Maybe an uncle with a shotgun for security. This is all very nice and romantic. However, you won't have access to infrastructure and technology that can not be maintained in a small society. Who is building your cars? Who is making the MRI scanner you occasionally need? Who is building airplanes? Where does your iPhone come from? So,... we need bigger organizations. Because nobody agrees on what is their fair share to contribute, we chose some wise people to decide what everybody should contribute and what would be fair. Admittedly, in the mean time, the wise people stay away from politics. A small society works to divide labor in one department, or to decide what's for dinner tonight, but it won't work to decide which kind of rare disease should be the next one to investigate and develop a treatment for. It won't work to maintain and develop infrastructure that guarantees internet access, it won't be able to put satellite's to space etc... you're living in a utopia. I know you're going to keep telling me I'm wrong, I know you're going to keep disagreeing. Reason and logic is not what brought you to your point of view, so you won't listen to it either way. I hope you can be happy, and by all means, start your small community, you will be less angry and happier.

The charts have been amazing for my birthday today haha I’m so happy, off to the bar now to get so hammered I rip my other ear off with a crowbar and do a repeat of my 21st last year 😂. Waking up in an MRI machine getting 16 stitches is not fun hehe.
