Good for you, grats. Must be nice to read those NPC replies from back then. I have a similar story, borrowed \~$20k in 2016 and went all-in on BTC. I only divested the majority of my stack last year. And I agree, I wouldn't do it today, I usually recommend nocoiners to add between 1-10% BTC to their savings plan in addition to an index fund, whatever they're comfortable with (and to stay away from shitcoins).

Technically BTC can be also anonymous. If you buy with KYC on exchange you can swap it to monero on some no kyc exchange. And swap it back to btc with same no kyc swap. Ofcourse that address to which you swap btc back cant be compromised and you have to swap it in proper environment. But for random NPC its not viable and maybe only few % know this.

It's pretty easy to dismiss crypto as a scam. A lot of the people engaging in crypto are only interested in quick gains. They listen to influencers for advice when they want to buy the next big token. The current meme token season makes this blindingly obvious. It was a lot less in your face earlier, but token creators have realized you don't have to come up with some selling point that sounds remotely reasonable, if you can just convince people they'll make a lot of money buying your token. The space is basically just glorified gambling. How is the average NPC supposed to know bitcoin is different if they don't want to put time into learning because they just instantly dismissed it when they put it in the same bucket as crypto. The average crypto investor doesn't know they're getting scammed. Time will fix this, but I do think crypto is an attack on bitcoin. I'm sure it's already done a lot of damage. Hopefully as bigger players adopt bitcoin, and none of the scams, it'll become more obvious that the 2 space has nothing in common.
