Yes, sort of. The very first machines were imprint-based and you'd run a slide over the card to "imprint" using carbon paper. These were sometimes referred to as "knuckle busters". The first magnetic stripe solution was created by an IBM engineer in the early 1970s. The Verifone ZON terminal is one of the most popular ones that people remember. It used PSTN, or POTS (plain old telephone server) for connectivity in many cases. Some of the newer ones use GPRS today, which doesn't require a phone line or Internet, though many of them have that capability as well, either as primary or backup. Bitcoin or Lightning-based POS terminals should probably look at GPRS in addition to Internet as a potential solution, too.
He's not articulating it very well but I'm doing this just with extra steps - I bought a used Tesla with a BTC loan. I then turo out the Tesla and my income goes towards the BTC loan. Once the loan is paid off, free car. Saylor's model is similar because he's banking on the BTC always increasing in value in some way... And honestly it sounds like a POS or POTS (XCH) coin would be more likely to generate revenue in this way than a POW-based coin, because it just sits there and answers challenges.
Might want to look at Klever (KLV). I can see it doing a 10x this year. Also, Moonpots (POTS) is at a good price and has potential over the next year. You don't need to buy POTS, you can earn it by putting your coins in their vaults. They have stablecoin vaults on BNB and FTM if you're risk averse and don't want to deal with volatile assets. Also, won't hurt to pick up a piece of Beefy (BIFI) and put it to work earning in a Beefy Boost vault to earn a native token on whichever chain you choose (I chose METIS and FUSE). These are some of the things I'm currently doing.

I was a product manager during the early days of Voice Over IP. From the start, every aspect of the emerging technology made perfect sense. VOIP was obviously the path to a future with smartphones, pockets full of music, virtual meetings, and PayPal. New protocols were developed like H.323 and SIP. It was all soooo obvious. Your phone was going to become your wallet. Your wallet would become your identity. Your identity would become a currency in its own right. But the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) took almost 100 years to develop the myriad of complex switching and regulatory features we all took for granted. Replacing a century of ingenious solutions based on switches and twisted-pair wiring with OBVIOUS improvements was far from trivial. The regulatory challenges alone (especially across international boundaries) were daunting. Today’s Crypto machinations are surprisingly similar to those that embroiled VOIP between, say, 1995-2000. These puzzles WILL be solved. It is all going to happen. It will take longer and be more painful than many think, but you folks reading these threads right now are the ones who will drive it. We’re at a place now that will be laughably different in five years and utterly unrecognizable in ten.
GMR, PDX, CRO, and POTS. GMR is my biggest win so far, but I'm expecting PDX to overtake those gains by a country mile in the next 6 months as the devs build it out to become a premier BSC utility.
