The tale of your story is, mind your own business. Do I come preaching to you because I’ve made millions in my property and you haven’t? If you haven’t why didn’t you buy a property? Do I tell you to quit your job because hey I did and I made further millions from my business? No kidding again. Why don’t you quit your job, No one gets rich working let me tell you. Nope I don’t tell you either of those things because it’s not my concern you like to go to your job for measly pay (or that your SIL doesn’t want to buy btc)

I agree that neither my FIL or SIL have an understanding of Bitcoin. One takeaway I see is that my FIL could be representative of others his age that have brokerage accounts. He didn't want to "fuddle" around with self custody of Bitcoin. He was all about ease of use with his experience. I'd surmise that many of his generation would do similar with an ETF or Bitcoin mining stocks. My daughter is somewhat understanding of Bitcoin and is open to purchase. Unfortunately her husband (my SIL) has a negative view of it and has heard it is a scam. I'm hoping that in my daughters 401(k) there is a way for her to have some exposure to Bitcoin. That is for her to decide.

Ngl man if he didn’t tell his wife about his crypto he prolly didn’t have much. I told my child’s mother how to access my funds once it hit an important amount. Unless ur SIL thinks he might’ve kept that from her? U should still try to find any funds I guess but if the man’s WIFE didn’t kno about his crypto he might’ve only had like $500 or somethin. Either way, sorry for ur loss and good luck 😊

We have no idea if there's actually any funds, so SIL will most likely not be spending any money on services to try and obtain anything (costs around the funeral and dealing with the rest of the estate are high enough). However, I connected with one of my colleagues that have computer forensics under his belt and they offered to help us out best he can. Thank you for the advice and for the condolences 🙏🏻

Depending on how strict he was with securing his seed phrase, OP’s SIL may find a screenshot of the seed phrase words in his phone’s photos, notes, etc.

There are businesses that specialize in this. If he talked about mining my guess is he at least held a decent amount of his wealth in crypto. If he doesn't have a safety deposit box where he kept his seed phrases or a safe in his home, it's possible it could be lost. If it's an unknown amount of money then my guess is it wasn't important enough for your brother to build in these safeguards. However, if you know a rough dollar value of possible assets, it may make sense to pay someone to do some digging to see if they can locate a seed phrase on an old laptop etc. There are programs and viruses that search for these now to steal funds. It could also be used to recover the phrases and have access to his wallets. I'm sorry for your loss and wish you and your SIL well in recovering the funds.

I'm really sorry for your loss. Losing a brother is difficult. Your SIL should check Metamask on the computer he used. If he saved the passwords sometimes it will automatically log in. Also look for any paper or carved metal that has a long wallet address that is a bunch of #s & letters &/or any list of 12 words (seedphrase). Do NOT under any circumstances tell anyone those 12 words. That's the password to access the wallet.

Thank you, that's very helpful! I've also connected with a colleague that has some computer forensics under his belt so if it comes to the last option I've got someone to help out with that. Putting together an email to my SIL tonight and will definitely include your info there 🙏🏻

Sorry for your loss. 1. Centralized exchanges: reach out to them as you would for a bank. 2. Decentralized wallets: the 12, 24, or 25 words should help. 4. PCs and other hardware: you may find the words here. Looking through your brother stuff may not be on your top priority list, but it may be worth doing. I would not trust anyone other than family with this. You, your SIL, or someone reliable may need to up their IT skills. 3. Hardware wallets (if any): really try to find the backup of the phrase. If everything else fails, there are people that will hack them for you, make sure you are talking with a reputable person. Reminder for everyone with more than $3.50 on crypto: With crypto, you are your own bank, and your bank dies with you. Take care, and prepare.

look at the bookmarks on his computer, if the crypto is sitting on an exchange (binance/coinbase/etc) you could be able to retrieve the funds with a death certificate and proof that SIL/you are the beneficiary

I sold half in Nov due to btc/USD breakdown at $53k and volume drier than the Sahara. I sold the other half a bit later when $44k broke down and again very little volume. These were important areas of support on the 3 day charts. I was also screenshotting the shit out of my balances and spending money like a real asshole. The perfect confluence of technical indicators and emotional indicators. This was also my 3rd cycle so I'd been aware of my mistakes in the past. Externally, the fed announcing the up only asset buying was winding down was a big red flag. The second external big red flag to me was my sister in law buying the absolute top of the housing market despite my pleading with her otherwise. "If we don't buy now, we'll never be able to afford a house," she said. I told my wife this was classic behavior/thoughts of participants in a manic, exhausted market. My SIL is historically allergic to money. I have played a few trades since with a 50/50 win rate. I sold everything a few weeks ago due to upcoming family events and feel like I got decently lucky. I'd buy back lower or if general crypto sentiment improves, but I'm not in a rush tbh. I'm more into capital preservation at the moment. That being said, most people (myself included) shouldn't actively trade in the current market conditions. Either DCA or wait for obvious risk on conditions and hammer the green button. PS, you should also counter trade the shit out of the window lickers that hang out on this sub. It's full of exit liquidity. Stick around only for sentiment spot checks.

In my case with my SIL the guy can be 40 years older if he owns his own tool and die company, has a boat, lakefront property, flies a helicopter, and hangs out with the speaker of the house. My FIL hated me tho for some reason.

Look inward, corrupt King thinks he’s a playboy living in Germany. Thailand has money, temples aren’t cheap and everytime we go my wife seems to drop $100 for a “blessing” and they’re every 2 blocks. It’s not the only way out. My SIL’s learned English, became teachers, married farangs, and now enjoy a good life.

My dad and SIL's grandmother were talking about how they can't turn on a computer or set up a modem even with the cable company's help. Crypto isn't even on the radar 🤣 My brother did tell me however that "crypto will never work because you can't short bitcoin and that is how companies make money" whereas his old argument was "I can hold gold, I can't hold bitcoin" I didn't even counter because, well, there seemed to be no point.
