Gifting at such a young age - very few 18 year olds will make sage decisions when $$ drops in their laps. I'll tell you what I did for both of my girls. Once they had their SS numbers (literally within weeks), I set up a 529 for them. I really could NOT afford much but I did put in $30 for each kid every two weeks (ie, I aligned it to when I got paid). Whenever they got checks from relatives for whatever, I would match that gift and turn them both into the 529. By the time they both graduated from HS, I had close to $40k in both accounts. I know, crazy right? But it was 18 years of EVERY TWO WEEKS putting in that amount. One child is going to college and this is at least helping her, but not giving her a free ride. She has made the (smart) decision to do her first two years in a community college to save $. If she plays her cards right, she will get a good degree and not be encumbered with loads of student debt at graduation. My other daughter has zero interest in college and I'm cool with that - not everyone wants to or needs to go to college. I am able to take $35k of that and put it into a Roth IRA that she set up - and that's going to be there continuing to grow for her. The other $5k that I can't go into the Roth, I had her set up a HYSA to put the $5k in there. This approach allowed me to set myself up for success and protect my future. It also has helped both of my children -- and has not given them so much that they don't understand the value of hard work and earning $. They KNOW this was 18 years of ME saving for them and they don't take it for granted.

There are exactly 2, yes, TWO manufacturers of cameras- you know the security camera that every military, government, building, etc have everywhere- in the USA. One of them is Arecont, I forget the name of the other one. They cannot meet the demand, but you can imagine that with security requirements at secure government facilities alone, there is no way those two companies can handle the demand for everything else (it's why those cameras, which are top notch btw, are so expensive). A TV? HA! Even Samsung, LG, and Sony don't make their own panels anymore, they got pushed out of the "lower end" market by the likes of BOE, etc- and they are ALL made in China. Heck even several of the higher end model panels are also built in China. And the chips for those TV's? You guessed it, Samsung buys the vast majority of those 3rd party. It's just cheaper, even considering they have captive manufacturing of MCU's etc. And where are they manufactured? Taiwan, or... China. The PCB, and all the connectors? China. The plastic and metal frames? Yup, China. Most of them are assembled in Malaysia, but assembly is kinda all over the place. This is where things start getting confusing with tariffs. Playstation 5s for example were incredibly hard to obtain for almost TWO years after their launch. Imagine if we had 2 or 3 times the middle class people who could afford one and want one. What happens then? Does just a small percentage of middle class people get one? Does the scalping get turned up to 11? Or would Sony actually work to produce more? If I remember correctly, one of the reasons why Fed lowered interest rates in September was because at the start of August we got an unemployment rate at 4.3% while the forecast was 4.1% and suddenly everyone started panicking the recession is coming.
