Let me tell you a story about GameStop. When you buy a stock you aren't really buying a stock, you are buying an 'IOU' for a stock share. The actual shares are in a safe at the DTCC. You are buying a digital IOU. Because it's a digital IOU, they aren't tagged with any specific serial number. So I could hypothetically sell you infinite IOU's right now. Collecting your money, blowing your money on hookers and blow, and until the SEC/DTCC _settles_ my account and investigates the amount of shares, I can keep going. But let's say I get audited or I am about to be. So now I call up my best bud, and ask him to sell me Options IOU's for my shares. That's right, I pay 5% for an option to buy 100 shares. that gives me _coverage_ for 100 shares. But what if I also create an option for 100 shares and sell that to my best bud, creating an infinite loop? He has 500 options from me, I have 500 options from him, we both cancel out our 5%'s owed and now we have effectively created infinite uncovered shares that don't exist. The DTCC says well they are covered by options. They really just don't exist at all. This is what happened to GameStop. So then they did a stock count. Someone somewhere lied. It happens all the time the way Moody's said Sub-prime mortgages were really A-prime mortgages. They lied. But now there is an issue. There is too many options out there for say, GameStop and they have expiration dates in which you have to buy to cover all those shares, and then resell all those shares back out for book-keeping. Well did you know there are these things called LEAPS in which you can borrow shares for 3 years that don't exist, and pay interest on those fake shares, and then every 3 years you have to give those shares back? You can leap ahead 3 years. So really the greatest con is the market can create infinite fake shares and everyone can cover their own tracks. That's how short selling works. You get so sell shares that don't even exist, with the belief that 'sometime in the future' you will rebuy them. Or you get leaps. We lost the moment we got a 401k. We lost the moment we gave up our pensions for 401k's. We lost the moment we put money in banks. We lost every time we pay a 3% bank surcharge for using our ATM Debit card. If you spend $50 20 times using your debit, the value gets reduced to like $5 because the bank takes 3% every time. Your value of that $50 becomes worthless because it's not cash. That's the greatest CON. Our market has to implode because of all the fake shares out there. All those leaps have to be covered. The only way the market can correct it's own fraud is to buy back those phony shares it's been selling the last 20 years. Excuse me, it's not fraud when they rewrite the laws so they can sell infinite shares. It's just "Good Business" to short sell stocks with infinite shares.
