Your read is probably right. The Broadcom earnings story was the surface narrative but this is the deeper rot underneath it. When Kraft, McDonald’s, and Whirlpool all use the same language in the same week, that’s not coincidence β€” that’s a synchronized signal from three completely different consumer sectors all saying the same thing: the American consumer is tapped out. Kraft is staples, McDonald’s is the cheapest restaurant option that exists, Whirlpool is big-ticket household. When McDonald’s is struggling, you’re not in a soft landing anymore. The Iran war connection is the part your system should flag. Whirlpool explicitly naming the Iran war as a sentiment killer ties directly back to your geopolitical thesis. Elevated oil prices from the ongoing conflict are functioning like a hidden tax on every American household β€” they’re spending more on gas and energy, leaving less for everything else. That’s deflationary for consumer discretionary and inflationary for energy simultaneously. What this means for your portfolio specifically: BYND and ADM are exposed here. If consumers are cutting spending, alt-protein premium products get cut first. BYND was already on life support thesis-wise. This doesn’t kill ADM but it’s worth noting. Your water, defense, and AI positions are largely insulated from consumer spending cycles. GRAB and SE are Southeast Asian consumers, not American β€” different dynamic entirely. The Iran thesis just got stronger. Consumer pain from elevated oil = NE and CIBR continue to benefit.

β€’r/wallstreetbetsSee Comment

People aren’t going to read this (It’s WSB) but your thesis is spot on - the war in Iran is the catalyst for an energy bull market. Natural gas sulphur and oil not going through the strait needs to come from somewhere else and even if the strait opens (it’s not) - it will still take at least a year for things to go back to normal assuming countries trust Iran/USA/Israel not to cause more disruptions. Any thoughts on RIG compared to SDRL and NE? It seems to have the most upside out of all of the drilling rig companies

Second-hand, very good friend of mine, but he bought and refinished two rowhomes in NE Philadelphia and got into Section 8. He ended up basically breaking even monetarily after four years, with how much damage the tenants did ("who wants to pay a water bill? Just cut some piping and route the water around the meter!" was my favorite. Another tenant removed and sold his kitchen cabinets). He lost out bigtime when the amount of time he had to spend on paperwork and personal labor to repair the damage (he's a contractor). He's said he would never do it again. After seeing his experience, I stick to normal rentals and haven't had a major issue in 15+ years.

> I laugh when people say the market is forward looking and has priced in this crisis. Neither are true. The market is forward looking. However, the future is always unknown. So the market does it's best to approximate the net present value of future cash flows, but it's not always correct. That's they entire premise of value investment. I'd also argue that the market has not fully priced in the largest supply shock in oil, ever. However, I can also easily make the argument that the crisis will be relatively short. If the conflict resolves soon and we go back to an oil glut next year....how much should energy stocks be up? You claim that energy prices will be high for years to come....why do you think that? >Many energy stocks are *well* off their 52 week highs Important to remember that there are huge variations in how much each energy name will benefit from this. Something like CNQ is sitting pretty. They have fixed cost production, entirely Canada based... basically a royalty name with higher costs. They're slightly off their high a few weeks ago, but still doing well. Or, the more extreme example, PSK.TO is basically right at its 52 week high. However, if you find an energy name with large amounts of middle east production.... probably not doing well. Flip side....I own NE which just set a new 52 week high. Oil services have been doing great recently as the expectation of more drilling gains traction. It's important to remember that most energy analysts thought this type of event would never actually happen. It takes the market awhile to price in the correct magnitude and duration of that black swan event. The beautiful thing about the market is that if you believe the consensus is wrong, you can express that trade. If you're right and they're wrong....you generally do well. Personally, if you look at oil price charts I see an upward trajectory YTD, with a ton of noise caused by a combination of panic and jaw boning along the way. I'd argue that the market is slowly pricing in higher for longer. I actually just listened to some great analysis of this exact topic, link [here](https://open.spotify.com/episode/4HQkrGQjeLyZ3RtUdhVPvA?si=IIJKIhnkQBW3VppOiZOIAw).

I say that is debatable. All of Jet Blue's debt load is where it is at today. Also I feel like a big part of their possible growth was expanding across the country. Spirit gave them that if it went through. There is a lot we can dig into with Jet Blue, but I think their biggest issue is their exposure domestically. Their domestic exposure outside of the NE, FL, and Los Angeles is very limited. I think that is a missed opportunity there.

Real estate is illiquid and comes with a lot of work (maintenance, tenants etc), so it depends on how active you want to be. So OK NE way to interpret this is Trump has become irrelevant to the stock market. He is largely irrelevant to Ukraine. Why? Because people have observed what he says has little connection to what he does. Having said that one would expect a general market correction due to inherent uncertainty. Why that has not happened I don’t know. Unless the market is propped up by a small cadre of investors who have so much control that Trump is irrelevant to them. Massive corruption. I just don’t know.

>meanwhile in the US, Republicans will be trying to convince everyone to start bottling our own farts instead of accepting that renewables and battery storage are the future. Certainly explains Texas leading the way for renewable energy deployment by a long shot..... >As for China, they dominate solar panel and EV production and will simply accelerate electrification and make themselves immune from such shocks in the future This doesn't happen overnight and it won't solve their problems now. It certainly alleviates the pressure. >We consume 50% more than we produce, so it not simply that we don't need that oil, it's that we don't make use of it ourselves, for a variety of reasons. I never said we don't need the oil. Our exports and imports are also geographic factors. Crude oil from West Texas, New Mexico or from the Balken don't go to CA becuase CA policies have limited fossil fuel infrastructure (pipelines from being built and then localities have prohibited crude moving by rail). That's why CA imports 60% of their crude, becuase of policy choices. Same reason why the Jones act waiver alleviates prices for the NE, they have blocked pipelines so they rely on Jones act compliant ships to import fuel. You're right that there is a delta, but it's not insurmountable and compared to other countries we will be fine.

hard to say 'oops our bad' after trying to kill their entire leadership. this is, actually, a shooting war now. Just like WW2 was. Iran ain't no Japan, but they're not a small nation and have two very powerful friends who can help them directly, while Japan was all by its lonesome in the NE corner of the globe, and on less-than-friendly terms with both Moscow and Nanking/Chungking.

In church parking lots on Sunday mornings, schools, businesses, driving through neighborhoods patrolling, pulling people over randomly, speeding down residential streets. Bombshell my ass. This is just another retiring MAGA supporting congressman, Don Bacon (R NE), trying to launder his record on the way out the door. He isn’t retiring because of age or principle. He’s leaving because his district has turned blue and he knows he would lose. After nearly a decade of voting with Trump and MAGA Republicans, now he wants credit for β€œspeaking out.” That’s not courage. That’s damage control. When it mattered, he voted yes. He helped enable Trump, backed MAGA leadership, and supported policies that put Americans’ healthcare at risk. A few late stage quotes do not erase years of complicity. Words are cheap. His votes are the record. And his record is MAGA. Just another rat paddling away from the ship.

POWL has been great, one of those names I brought up here through the years here lol. Also here's so my info about the wait times I was talking about: [https://www.euci.com/grid-operators-across-the-country-facing-multi-year-backlog-in-new-generation-connections/](https://www.euci.com/grid-operators-across-the-country-facing-multi-year-backlog-in-new-generation-connections/) It's insane how long some backlogs are. >The average wait time in the ERCOT queue was 4.5 years. The only grid operator with a shorter queue time was ISO-NE at 3.8 years. ISO-NE also had the smallest 2024 planned capacity, 4 GW. >In NYISO, an β€œextreme backlog” has led to a new process aimed at expediting projects. For the 110 solar, wind, and energy storage projects in the traditional queue, current average wait time is 6.5 years.

CNQ is a beast. Probably not a ton of torque to the upside, but one of the best energy names out there for stability. I also think there are a lot of really interesting oil service names. I own NE for offshore. FTK makes a product that dramatically increases yield from fracking wells. There's a few small Canadian names I can't mention that make software that really help make the E&P field more profitable too.

Ya it's all very regional. I'd suspect that if you peek under the hood in the NE you'd find that it tends to be the wealthier who are buying and that lower/middle income bracket has stalled out. Where I'm at it feels like there's just two worlds - the world where people have money and the world where people just can't afford to live. Even people I know that are making tons of cash, probably in the $150-200k for a DINK household told me they felt like they were struggling.

Quite the opposite actually. Graduated in 2010. Have ridden the housing market, job market, and stock market all the way up perfectly. It allowed me to achieve financial independence last year, which is a nice accomplishment. If another recession were to happen, I would be well-positioned. But having come into the professional world on the tail end of the great recession. Having grown up in the NE, where a lot of people worked in heavily impacted industries (i.e., finance), I've seen the misery these events cause. People think they want it. They really don't. There is a read from the boggleheads forum during this event, its pretty chilling. https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25126

So has NE. I'm up about 40% and I didn't hit the bottom. If the thesis of offshore holds up, yes there is a huge amount of upside left. It might be a year or two to start, but offshore rigs take years to build. If demand rises for them cash flows will explode and stay high for a full cycle.

Prisoner's dilemma, or Game Theory? There are hundreds of different schemes. Rationality leads to the best outcome for most games (NE). Though not for all of them (like prisoners dilemma). This highly depends whether those games are played simultaneously, sequentially, whether there's asymmetry, whether there's (im) perfect information, etc. I actually did study game theory very extensively. Pareto optimum is the best possible outcome, if they could together rationalize, that would lead to the best optimum (Pareto efficient) outcome. However, assuming everyone is rational is only applicable in classical Theory, but Psychological Theory adds the fact that not everyone is rational. And that is unfortunate, which is the reason the crisis happened the way it happened.
