Whenever I hear of 0DTE i think of SPX and XSP. I trade mainly trade SPX ODTE credit spreads with 50 delta to minimize risk and directionally. I use a strategy using RSI, BB and VWAP (using SPY as the benchmark for VWAP) and then I would either take a Put Credit Spread or a Call Credit Spread. I manage my risk by attaching a stop loss of 30% above my premium i receive. I only open a position once a day and I open into a position between 10:30am - 12PM. I typically do 1 to 5 contracts (depending on major catalysts). If I win, I close out my position. If I lose I close out my position. I am a beginner at this and have been trading options since last November. I experienced and learned a lot these past few months. I was doing 80 to 90 delta OTM credit spreads in January - Mid March and I was banking almost $2K - $5K a week. Like others have stated, 1 - 2 bad days in March wiped out my gains from the beginning of the year. Learned from that and never doing that again. I still do lose but i only lose a days worth of gains - when I lose, though, I feel like crap - no matter the $ amount. I don't gamble in the sense of going to a casino, but if anyone says they're not a gambler because of x, y and z, guess what? It's still gambling. To me, this is all gambling, but it's calculated. \*As I am typing this, I am wondering if I should do debit spreads instead of credit spreads using the same methodology? It's still a directional play. Any thoughts on this?

I get that you need to, at a minimum, cover your costs, otherwise why bother. But on the flip side, your customers need to determine likely profit/loss. Let's take your hypothetical 100 entrant example. If you are paying out 33% to first place, that only leaves 67% for the other 59 paid out spots (assuming you payout 60%). If every one really starts out 3-10% in the hole from your hosting fee....I don't see how the percentage of players making any money would be much different from real life day trading. Seems to me that either the first place payout needs to come down, or your % of players paid needs to come down, or both. Whats the point, I'd rather flip a coin on ODTE options than invest time just trying to make my money back, or maybe be that 1 out of 100 guy that makes anything. So how does the payout break down beyond first place?

Sure, but selling weeklies far OTM will likely yield more premium than any single day gain. Further, if a company jumps past your strike, close the option at a loss and you won't get assigned early if done in the same trading day. If someone trades away all of their extrinsic value to exercise early, you probably either missed a detail like an ex-dividend date. Otherwise, early exercise is welcomebecause the option buyer takes the entire risk of the stock falling, while you got paid for potential upside. You could get unlucky and lose upside potential. Missing out on the next big one is my specialty. Still, volatility generally works both ways. A stock that can climb 10% can probably fall as much or more. If you sell a CC, and the underlying goes down 10%, you'll still collect option premium whereas other investors holding the stock felt the full loss. If the stock rebounds, repeat as open as desired. Lastly, don't set strike prices that you can't stomach getting shares called away at. If you sell below market but still profit, you have some just fine. Chasing premiums and holding to expiration are common traps to avoid. Sell delta in a low range even if the premium feels trivial. If you think the stock is going up, buy calls or at least shares. I've had a CC close 1 cent below my strike, which was several steps OTM at the time. When you see both the underlying stock and the option move favorably to you, it feels pretty awesome. Could you miss the next Nvidia? Possibly. I did. However, I sold at a profit and at the time, no one knew the top was a long ways up. Having shares called away just above strike is a perfectly fine way to take profit. CC's aren't as foolish as you might think. I don't want to sell QQQ, but the premiums are no joke. I know the ETF is likely to give a couple ticks against that days direction. While tiny in real dollars, this makes a fairly safe $10 to $100 plus with ODTE's. That adds up, and a CSP will offer a premium to buy your shares back. No risk of unwanted assignments when truly day trading. I'm saying it's the be all end all. You'll never get rich. It beats SPY by about 3% - 4%. Time value of money makes that type of trading offers a fairly safe income stream in exchange for max potential growth.
