Honestly, let's not disparage the 16-bt graphic card of the SNES. Zelda: A Link to the Past was a beautiful game with vibrance and complexities despite the limitations of the processing. The cybertruck is just really shitty polygons, and in no way do I wish to diminish polygons.

Mentions:#SNES

That sir is slander! The N64 could render far more polygons than the cybertruck. The cybertruck is more like when they attempted 3D graphics on the SNES.

Where were you buying SNES games in the 90s? I paid $30 tops, $20 or less for NES in the late 80s when that was new and sometimes $10 per cart on the old Atari mid-80s. Now 80s arcade was the real money suck when you are a broke kid whose mom thinks video games are the devil and won't give you quarters.

AI is in its nascency. What we want and will end up with vs what we have now is not even comparable. Look at NES video games vs where we are at now with PS5 Pro. We are at the NES/SNES stage. To get to PS5 level and beyond in the next 10 years will require an enormous amount of experimentation and compute. Deepseek may "reset" the cost baseline a bit in terms of cost (doubtful for many reasons) but it's the end result everyone is seeking. Far from it.

In yesterday's lounge post I mentioned SenesTech ($SNES), a company producing birth control for rats as a new way to keep rat population in check. I find the whole idea amusing. Here's what I learnt so far. \* The motivation behind this is to prevent accidental poisoning of other animals like dogs, cats, some other domestic animals, or even little kids. There was an infamous accident with with NYC's Central Park owl called Flaco (a rat poison was found in its blood system after its untimely death). Contrapest, a SenesTech solution, curbs birth rate in several generations of rats (males and females). \* New York City Council passed a bill for rat contraception pilot program that has to be deployed within 180 days. Initially I thought there's competition but apparently there's none. Contrapest is unique. However, I'm not sure if this could be a catalyst because it's not the first time Contrapest was attempted in American cities (2020 in Washington DC, 2022 in Seattle, also I found mentions of Ferndale, Michigan and Ottawa), the results were not 100% conclusive. For example, some city authorities were saying that complaints about rats were even higher. In my opinion it's a dubious metric because there could be numerous reasons why complaints' count increased. If you look up laboratory-based experiments, Contrapest works and works well. \* I think the main catalyst is reducing the production cost of ContraPest. One of the ingredients is triptolide, a substance extracted from Thunder God Vine, a Chinese Plant. Very expensive, 15 times expensive than gold of the same weight. Some other guys (TriptoBio) found a way to produce it synthetically. Once approved by the EPA, it could dramatically reduce expenses. SenesTech's CEO, Fruendt says, "From our perspective, biosynthetic triptolide brings two very distinct advantages to ContraPest. One, biosynthetic production is typically more consistent in its quality and availability, compared with botanically derived triptolide from China, our current source. Two, biosynthetic production is typically much less expensive than botanical purification, allowing us to lower the price of ContraPest and greatly expand our market domestically and internationally." \* By SEC filings, it seems that revenue and gross profit are steadily growing year by year, which indicates that interest in the product is awakening. \* The last news is SenesTech's another product Evolve (soft baits; a much simpler thing, just Cottonseed oil and other organic stuff) is registered in Hong Kong and is going to be distributed by Fruit Tree Lmt and its subsidiaries. Kinda bummer that's not ContraPest, their flagship product, but expansion is a good thing anyway. My positions: 200 shares, I'm buying another 200 shares before earning in Nov 12. I'm gonna hold anyway for a couple of years, maybe the company finally takes off.

Guys, what do you think about SNES (SenesTech), a company making rat contraceptives as pest control? NY City Council passed a bill for rat contraception pilot program that has to be deployed within 180 days. I think SenesTech could be chosen, but not sure competition and how the price improves in the event of SenesTech being chosen.

Nintendo has a massive captured market with their IP. Beyond new release next gen titles, the subscriptions for NES, SNES, Gamboy titles etc is a significant pull for older gamer/market with $$$ Playing the old titles on the switch while stuck on plane, airport, while waiting for dinner etc, the casual gamer, reaches more people than steam decks. Agreed. Companies need to rethink the life cycle of technology. Phones are lasting longer and upgrades are nearly as enticing. The same goes for consoles. People are still buying Switches. The reason is that most people are buying consoles for the content and not the console, itself. It takes a few years to generate that content. We're no longer in the days of NES->SNES->N64 where each generation absolutely changed how games were played.

I’ve owned almost every major console since SNES. I currently own a PS5, Series X, Switch and built a high end gaming rig. I don’t know why you’re pretending like the current generation has the same level of original games as previous generations. It’s obviously not true, and anyone who’s been gaming long enough knows that. To take my favorite studio as an example: Naughty Dog made 3 original PS4 games, plus a sizable DLC in Left Behind. They’ve yet to release an original PS5 game, just remakes and remasters, and they haven’t even announced a PS5 game yet. They’re unlikely to release anything before 2026. They’re a bit of an extreme example, but it’s a dynamic repeating all over the industry. AAA titles are taking significantly longer to release, and consoles have far fewer indie games available than PC.

The counter argument to your view of "momentum" to buy the next Switch 2 console is the lack of incentives. Switch 2 is likely to be a marginal upgrade to have better hardware to be closer to PS5 and XBOX (what ever goofy number they are using now) so ported games will have comparable graphics. Meanwhile I'm content playing the latest releases of Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon to not have a desire to buy Switch 2. I usually need the wow factor to justify a new gaming system. To me that usually means skipping a generation in consoles, or embracing that unique gaming experience that was drinking beer and Wii bowling at home! I am one of those loyal but casual Nintendo players. I owned Nintendo, SNES, Wii and Switch.

Out of curiosity, what to you is the “glory days of NES”? Their current system is their best selling system and is on track to become the greatest selling system *in history*. They constantly put out great games, and the Switch has better 3rd party support than any other of their consoles since the SNES. I’m not really sure what you even mean by “become open source” either. This sounds like a boomer take. A “back in my day” kinda take.

SNES wasn’t on the market as long as the NES, which came out in ‘83 in Japan and ‘85 in the U.S. and the SNES coming along in ‘90 and ‘91 respectively. SNES had a solid 5 years or so before the industry largely moved onto the 3D systems rather quickly (not to mention having an actual competitor with Sega).

Mentions:#SNES
r/stocksSee Comment

Why don’t you mention that N64 only sold 33 million then? Compared to 103 million for the PS1? That's a valley. The SNES sold 49 million, compared to 31 million for the Sega Genesis. That's a peak. You obviously don't know much about video games or Nintendo's strategy, because VR is not at the point where they would use it as the base for a console. Their strategy centers around non-cutting edge technology and not competing on things like hardware, graphics, and performance: Gameboy, Wii, Switch. This would go against that philosophy
