If you want to bet on short term rates then bet on short term rates. Use TUA which is 5x levered 2 year's instead of TLT. Long term bonds have more oomph but depending on why short term rates are going down long term rates could go down, go down a lot less (bull steepener), or even go up (steepener twist). In two of those three conditions you would do better with TUA. When you're making a macro bet bet on the actual thing you're betting on.

I'm in cash except for a small position in TUA and daytrading right now. 42 Macro and Hedgeye think that the all-clear on getting back in will be in Q4 when the Fed should start cutting rates. Today was a great trading day on the fake news of the 90-day delay of the tariffs. Ride it up and get out at the first sign of it turning. Futures are up about 1.5% this evening so tomorrow should be interesting too.
Learn how IEF, TLT, TUA, IVOL, etc work and go from there.
As for bonds, EDV is good because of it's low fees and high duration. Shorter duration, I don't know. I personally like TUA but that's a managed 2-year futures fund. Not what he would probably like. A vanilla IEF isn't bad either.

We are going to pay for the aggressive front-loaded rate cuts now through higher inflation and long term rates at the back end, which would kill long term bonds. If I were betting on a more aggressive rate cutting schedule than currently priced in the market, I would go long TUA, which is leveraged on the 2-year.

Fed controls the overnight rate. So you want the shortest duration, preferably levered up. TUA is 2 years levered 5x. You want this not a 10y or longer. Long duration is not guaranteed to go up just because they cut. Long end responds more to long term growth and inflation expectations. If they cut when inflation is beat then they will move together. If they cut while inflation is still high (ie prioritizing growth or "insurance cuts") the long end will tank because it's a signal they've "given up" on 2% inflation targeting.
SOFR futures are the literal trade for this. Shorting TUA (levered 2's) is the closest ETF proxy I know of. The further you get from those the less precise the bet is to short term rates.
I donβt trade futures. I have this trade on in much smaller size using ETFs TUA and TYA. But if the spec size is 2X larger in the 2Y position doesnβt that mean itβs more like 4.65 to 1?
TUA is a very different product. Idk why you linked it. He's not using t-bills as collateral at all and his leverage is much higher.
TUA and TUA doing the same trade as you. They buy the 2Y & 10Y futures contract and use t-bills as the collateral.
TUA for 5X levered 2Y futures and TYA for 3X levered 10Y futures. Size appropriately given the leverage.
FYI for anyone who wants to do this trade in ETF form there is TUA (5X levered 2Y futures) and TYA (3X levered 10Y futures.) Not investment advice.

Rising: TMV 3x short long bonds PFIX has puts on long bonds which will do better in a panic due to the vol component. Short TUA if you want to bet on the short end rising instead of long (hawkish fed). Falling: TUA or any long duration bond fund.
If you want the torque from higher duration, but you want to bet on a Fed cutting cycle. Then may I suggest the ETF $TUA. Uses the 2Y - a purer play on the Fed funds rate - but buys futures contracts to achieve the duration risk of the 10Y. So if the 2Y goes from 5% to 3%, you'll get the same price appreciation as if it was the 10Y going from 5% to 3%.

One can lever up 2 years with TUA now. It's levered to give similar beta to a 7-10y bond fund but follows the movement of the 2 year tenor. I prefer this to the long end which probably has more likelihood to catch up with the 2's vs JPow cranking the short end to the moon again from here.
IVOL holds TIPS with a convex 2-10 steepener using swaptions. Today is a good example of the underlying TIPS down but the fund is up due to the steepener. If I recall from their presentation it does better when the 2s side is volatile (more of a bull steepener situation). You could also construct your own trade with long TUA for a levered exposure to the 2s side and short the long end with any long end inverse fund or PFIX interest rate hedge.

TLT has an effective duration of 17.17 yrs, so if 20-30yr yields fell 2%, it would gain a bit less than 34%, not 50%. It is possible for a fund to have that much duration in 2yr notes by using futures. TUA holds 2yr futures with a target duration of 10yr bonds. If you don't need specific meeting precision and don't understand futures you can trade leveraged 2y treasury with the TUA ETF. 2y treasuries are basically a strip of 8 SOFR's. It is less pure but if you think a point in the curve is 500bps too hot or cold most of the rest of the curve will probably move as well.

There are other two special purpose ETFs - TUA and TYA - if you want to bet on short end of the rate curve coming down. The former holds 2yr treasury futures, equivalent to holding 2yr but with the duration sensitivity of 6 year. You still get paid a decent interestnto hold. TYA is the same but levering long on intermediate duration.
