>Not sure what Mosley is on. Facts, logic, and a sober reading of the requirements of the Act. An emergency isn't enough. It has to be a national emergency that threatens the national security of Canada and cannot be dealt with under existing legal tools. This was none of those things. The national elements, the border blockades, were either already dealt with or in the process of being dealt with by local police using existing tools at the time the Act was invoked; rather than being national in scope, the emergency was effectively localized to Ottawa. The national security of Canada was not threatened in the way that term is defined in the Act. There was no reason to believe existing legal tools, if applied, were insufficient to deal with the convoy. >The province officials and police department completely failed in mounting a response, so the feds stepped in. The government was advised that the RCMP, OPP, and OPS had devised a coordinated response to the situation in Ottawa the day before the Act was invoked. They were quite literally in the process of mounting a response when the feds stepped in. There was no need for their intervention at that point at all.

Yep. I'm super curious on how they're going to resolve this: raise fees or other. Many networks have similar issues with fee schedules where transactions could be abused. I was taking a look at early Bitcoin forums on adding secret messages in OPS_Return transactions. So many of those posts got negative community feedback because they didn't like storage bloat.

> You know that no arrested canadian was charged with anything. Perhaps reconsider your sources of information. They’re letting it go to see where it ends up. Everyone that was in the area was photographed. That area has the most surveillance in the country. OPS stated they will be tracking people for several months.

The chain of events in (lack of) enforcement that led to the crackdown by the federal government is totally a local issue. Trucks - not protesters- should have been out of the streets within 24-48 hours. If OPS had done their job, the protesters might still be in front of parliament and it surely wouldn’t be international news. By the way, Centretown and Downtown Ottawa is a picture of disparity and houses some of the most vulnerable people in our community. They, like all of us, have not had a normal life for the past two years. In return, what they got is a pure living hell for three weeks. I hope they don’t have to go through that again anytime soon. Daft indeed.

Ottawa Police did nothing for weeks yet they had never allowed vehicles or structures (tents et al) to block the streets of Ottawa for a whole day before in a protest. Oh wait, I’m wrong about that. Yellow Vests had that privilege a couple of years back. Certainly BLM and other groups who have protested in Ottawa didn’t get that ‘courtesy’. Somehow the protesters managed to honk horns for days on end which had no effect on the government’s business but clearly affected local residents health and well-being, not to mention being harassed by protesters for wearing a mask while walking to get groceries in their own neighborhoods. That being said, the Freedom Convoy could still be protesting today without government intervention if they did it like everybody else, taking the streets on foot. You are all thinking that this is a national story but in fact, it’s a very local story about OPS not getting it done. Between bad management at the top and insubordination in the ranks, herein lies a story yet to be told.

Without getting into the politics of it, I will speak as to why demonstrator actions were probably deemed illegal rather than fair and free protest. First of all , the trucks. Dozens of transport trucks were driven and parked in the downtown core around parliament. That has never been allowed before. Protests that have involved farmers with tractors or other truck convoys (Yellow Vest protest a couple of years ago) were a one-day affair that was tolerated if there was tacit agreement with Ottawa Police (OPS) of a set timeline. Second is infrastructure. Putting up tents or building shelter and storage is a no-no and has always been. Anyone who saw the treatment that Tamil protesters received years ago in Ottawa will tell you that OPS doesn’t mess around with either vehicles or infrastructure when it comes to protest. The notable exception has been a small shelter for an Indigenous elder across from Parliament. Shelters have also been allowed on Parliament Hill but that is under the federal jurisdiction of the RCMP and doesn’t involve any decision-making by OPS. The massive construction and renovation project restricts access to most of the grounds of parliament now. Note: Parliament Hill and much of the land around it is still considered unceded by Indigenous groups so, technically, they are home. If the current protests were held daily or even kept running 24hrs/day without shelter or trucks, I don’t see how any of this enforcement would be allowed or legitimate. Of course, pulling that off would be difficult and take its toll on protesters. As a totally personal note and from witnessing many events of this kind in Ottawa, I don’t see how this situation could have lasted more than a couple of days if the protesters had been BIPOC. Finally, even far-right zealots have a right to protest and do so on the regular and surely more than anybody in Ottawa. But if you allow a Nazi or Confederate flag in your midst without trying to rip it down, you will rightfully be painted as a fascist.

Ah yeah let me just shoot up an office building and claim my right to protest when I’m arrested. Knowing the OPS they will let me go in a jiffy, as long as I’m wearing a maga or something symbolically republican.

Mentions:#OPS

I agree with that. They let these pieces of shit go unchecked for way too long. OPS, the Mayor and Trudeau handled this poorly. But ultimately the blames lies on these protestors and the organizers who are trying to push their alt right agenda to “overthrown the government”. This is the right response by the Feds, if a bit late.

> -1 for suggesting that GDP is the "amount of income the US makes per year Granted, that’s a rough analogy and national annual production isn’t exactly corporate income, but I feel like it’s effectiveness enough and a comparison that’s accurate enough to educate many of those here who think OPS argument is sound. > It should be noted that debt-to-GDP ratios across the world are at unprecedented levels. This is not just a US issue. No one knows for sure how that will play out. It’s good to note this, but we’re not talking about an astronomical amount here which is going to result in the breakdown of the global economy (I mean, not yet anyway). And we should also note *why* the ratios are so high: because neoliberalism reduced public expenditure on public health and created a supply chain issue in a global economy that pushed speculation and risk to astronomical levels.
