Depends on the kind of encryption. If it’s a simple ROT, then he can store it in his head. It can also be a long key that is easy to remember (e.g the lyrics of a song). If it’s something like an 256 AES key, then this could be put on a zip file on a pen drive, encrypted with a strong but memorable password (like correcthorsebatterystaple)

Is seems my friend, that you have a case of the ROT. Result Oriented Thinking. We all do it, it is very human, but being aware of it will help you. Many people think along the lines of: Coin goes up: should have known, and invested more! Coin goes down: should have known, been more careful, waited for this dip! The truth is: we do not know what is going to happen, but we are fairly sure that the low risk coins (BTC and ETH) will trend up with time. Do your research, know you risk tolerance, and invest accordingly. When coin goed up: be happy! When coin goes down: know better times are ahead. These are the struggles of the HODLer. Do not look at what the result could have been, but look if you picked the best strategy for you with the info you had at the time. This is difficult, but doable. When it comes to money: always rationalise.

The message is encrypted with whatever the sender decides to use. The coinbase field is a random bunch of bytes. There are examples of using ROT13 encryption which is hilariously easy to decrypt.
Corollary to those first three: _don't_ put your recovery seed on an encrypted thumb drive with a new password that's only in your head. Or split the passphrase in 8 pieces and store each one in a horcrux. Or store it ROT-13 in an encrypted file on an encrypted partition on a drive buried under your house. I read something a while back by a guy who helped people trying to recover wallets. He said that _by far_ the most lost wallets were due to people who got too fancy with their recovery keys, acting like they had the CIA after them, and then forgot how to recover them. Just...get a safety deposit box or something.

Ngl my first crypto purchase I made as a stoned decision with an investor friend of mine, and that purchase ended up being the most profitable investment I've made so far, in terms of ROT.
