Silvio has started at least two companies before algorand. He clearly wants to be rich. He's obviously very smart, with significant contributions to theoretical cryptography. That doesn't always translate into business acumen or an appreciation for applications. The people at algorand foundation are first rate theoretical cryptographers, and they formed the core of the group at IBM Research in New York. They represent a minority of cryptographers, primarily from the TCC community.

VET. Four years ago, the story was “blockchain is a solution in search of a problem”, even though the entire supply chain and logistics industry was right there under their nose. So that was when I decided supply chains was one area that had real world use—so I went in on Walton, Mobi, Modum, Trac etc. but as the dust settled after the 2018 crash, saw Vechain was the only one still expanding despite the huge crash. And then recognized how the dual-token model and their TCC (toolchain credits) stabilizes user cost even during wild volatility. So went “all in”. And I know they aren’t the only one in town—ADA is often for whatever reason is seen as a competitor, as is IBM hyperledger, but Vechain has the advantage of being Asia-centric. Not concerned about the American competition as America has its head stuck so far up its own ass and appears to be determined to stay in the past vs looking towards the future as China, Singapore etc. are doing. By the time the US even starts to take blockchain seriously with supply logistics, China will already have fully implemented smart cities in their belt and road initiative. But idk tho

BaaS (Blockchain as a Service) uses TCC (tool chain credits). Companies pay fiat for TCC to pay for their transactions and the VeChain foundation provides the VTHO to fuel those transactions. That is the beauty of their two token system and BaaS. Even in countries where crypto trading is legal, it allows corporate clients to use their blockchain services without having to deal/operate in the crypto space. Which many may not want to for legal and regulatory compliance reasons.
It would sure be nice to have these tiered pricing schemes. Vechain has actually introduced TCC (Tool Chain Credits), which are used as credits to use Toolchain, which is kind of like an AWS for blockchain built on the VechainThor blockchain. The transaction costs are handled by the Vechain Foundation themselves through an MPP (Multi Party Payment) protocol. This way the companies who want to use a public blockchain don´t have to even touch Cryptocurrencies, which can be a big no no in certain jurisdictions. I would think that traditional pricing scheme would be possible through a solution like this. Can´t really comment on the marketing aspects. I´m more of a tech guy myself. :)

Depends on your definition of cryptocurrency. Are you speaking specifically of as currency, or blockchain in general? Because the two token model like VET has with VTHO/TCC certainly has solved that issue, but i wouldn’t call it a currency. But it is certainly being used without issue
