APP was one of the stocks rumored to be added to the SP500. Options can be exercised up to 530pm et, even though they stop trading at 4pm. Because of this, premiums were high on even out of the money options at the close. In fact, APP ended up being added and traded up to 529 after hours. The same thing happened in HOOD as well.

Yeah That’s a completely different story, they didn’t rise because of spy inclusion, they rose on multiple headlines and govt contracts news. Plus they weren’t an expected addition, it was unexpected, HOOD and APP are completely expected for the last 4 inclusions lol

This happened last time for APP when they did NOT get included last time. Their options the day before the announcement were crazy expensive but both sides were expensive. The market knew something was coming in the case here and in the case before with APP. They just didn't know which the decision was.

The options had premium on them at close because they were an inclusion candidate. Not because “someone knew something”. You were basically making a binary bet. Was the same situation for APP, MSTR, CVNA, and the other volatile stocks that are hopeful for inclusion.

That is absurdly high for a call that is $30 OTM of the spot price at about 2 weeks to expiration, similar to your CC call. A very high premium that close to expiration and that far OTM is another clue that the contracts have high IV. In general, contracts with high IV will have inflated premiums, even right up to the closing bell on expiration day. After all, anything can happen between the option market close at 4pm and the cutoff for exercise at 5:30pm. When IV is high and the underlying stock price is unusually volatile, the closing price on expiration day tends to be far above zero.

Yesterday, I was holding 1x AVGO 335c for earnings, sold too late but still about 800 profit (would've been 1800 had I sold at open, but ok). Then, like an exemplary regard, I slid that money into SPY addition plays. Bull credit spreads on HOOD (2x 100c/108c) and APP (1x 500c/520c) expiring next week. This was exactly the right move, but due to staring at too many charts, reading the daily thread, overthinking and overtrading, I inexplicably impulse sold them for $50 profit just before close, and degened $1k into SPY 640 puts expiring Monday. I genuinely don't know why I did this, and I have pretty much zero conviction the puts will be profitable. Anyone else find that dedicating hours at a time to trading is fun, but actually counter productive to making money? Anyone actually manage to just make a play and check it like once a day?

lol no one knows what the market will do, but BLOCK I’ll say was a surprise, that’s why it rallied. PLTR is a completely different story. HOOD and APP have already run up a lot, on this expectation alone. The post pump is pretty muted as well and has already sold off a bit. Soon, APP and HOOD were long over due and rugged tons of people betting on SPY inclusion. Both separately had a 120b-160b(APP) and 70n-90b(HOOD) market cap for almost half a year. I assume probably next year if RDDT can keep generating revenue.

Why did CC not become or even approach $0 when expiring OTM? I sold a covered call of APP two weeks ago that expired today (9/5). As expiration approach, the value of the contract did not approach zero despite being OTM. The strike price was $510, and the value of clothes was around $490. The call option was still valued at $5.85 at 4 PM. Can anyone help explain why this did not approach $0? Thanks in advance. Tried to look this up but didn’t find any good answers. Sorry if it’s been answered before

Because it's not in S&P 500, that's literally it. Tech stocks that made it into NDX and QQQ but not SPY tend to be very pump and dumpy, zoom out and look at all the random crashes the moment retail caught wind of them. I can mention a few others that had similar movements to it like APP, TEM, VST, list goes on there's just not enough liquidity nor mainstream attention on it. On the bright, if you want to buy and forget, any tech stocks with more than 20b market cap are usually pretty safe bet with good returns. But we gamble here so there's no point mentioning them in the first place, hence why I questioned OP
