That IPO day was fun for sure. I had 175 shares and I clocked in for work at 11:53 (card dealer shift started at noon) so I had to go to the casino floor where absolutely no phones allowed. I had the first break at 12:20 and got to BOH and it was at 56. I couldn’t hit the sell button fast enough and made $6k in 20 minutes. What a day.

Okay, how are they great? Last time I banked with them they penalized me with fees if I had under 5k in my account at any given time.  They seemed to change the rules all the time as well.  What is that? "your poor so let's punish you fee?" I bank with BOH and they are completely transparent. Even Chase is better than BOA.  I just don't understand why I'd be loyal to a company that takes my money because I don't have enough. It's not an overdraft fee or anything.  Besides that they've been rude to me whenever I asked them about their fees.  Maybe you have enough money and so you don't get punished, but I was a struggling student and they constantly took money from my account.

Diversify a bit completely away from tech. Many of the posts below are still touting tech which will fall in sympathy if NVDA does. A few months ago I bought a few hundred shares of HTGC, a firm that provides startup equity. And a couple of other dividend payers are good too. BOH is in a dip. Someday it could be acquired and have a big jump. If you still want to gamble with volatility, RDDT is still young and likely has a long climb ahead of it. QQQ literally has 100 companies of diversity in it. Granted one is NVDA. Good idea, AI has a lot of FOMO behind it's price now. Best of luck.

BOH has 20% SI and rebounding from regional bank crisis. These are fundamental squeezes as they squeeze and hold pricing. FSR, like GME and others that raise on speculation, drop right back leaving too many bag holders. I like squeezes where there are less bag holders.

HE is basically a monopoly on the power supply in Hawaii and pretty much working with the state and the US gov to swap Hawaii in to 100% renewable energy which means funding and support where even if they lose the lawsuits they will end up going back to where they were or better since they will essentially become the poster child of 100% renewable energy for other states. There’s a bunch of data to back this up but this is my brief of the situation. TBNK I admit is a bit of a gamble but they are one of the largest banks in Hawaii that has a high focus on land and real estate. With the fires burning down a large chunk of land, there will be a huge demand for financing, rebuilding, and sell offs and buy outs of land happening once the situation gets cleaned up a bit, they are trading low at the moment but once things stabilized they are poised to make some nice gains. BOH is also going well but I think TBNK has more room for larger growth.

Covid fears receded alot, people realized they can make more money, more info spreading alot, fed cuts, a mass realization that stocks are cheap, overall it’s just that people are feeling good about 2024 and once that first cut hits everything will blow up a bit more but if the feds announce another cut for 2025 then it’s going to absolutely break records back to back. Same reason I dropped a wad of cash on REITs like O and APR as well as banks like TBNK BOH and BAC. I’m hoping for a fruitful 2024

I haven't looked lately, but the preferreds of regional banks are probably a good start. BOH, Bank of Hawaii, for instance, is a fortress practically, and is, in the context of that island, too big to fail. Their preferreds were paying a decent yield recently because of course the price had dumped. Check them out. Out of the covered call ETFs, RYLD is the best, just because the Russell 2000 is volatile so the premiums it gets are good. Also cheap as small stocks have been beaten up. They have a strategy for selling the calls that sounds really strange at first but I've been in it for a while and it does work. BDC's might also work. I've been in BCSF, Bain Capital's version, for a while. It's done well. There's actually a lot of options, but in all cases there is risk involved. As with anything else, diversify and monitor closely.

Waiter here. Tipping actually works out better for the average customer than you’d think. With tips, I make about $33/hour on average. I get no breaks, walk around 6 miles a day at work, and bend over backwards to make the customer experience good. If I got paid hourly, I have no incentive to take bigger sections, skip bathroom breaks, or just give a fuck at all. I and many others would quit right away bc unless I’m making like $25/hr I’m better off going to somewhere more chill that’ll give me benefits, PTO, sick days… dignity 😂 and work a bit more. As a customer you don’t see how much time a restaurant is over staffed (slow days, waiting for rushes, cleaning). As of now making a low hourly, the restaurant can keep a bunch of servers waiting and ready for a potential rush at all times. But if we made a real hourly *and* needed 20% more staff, costs will likely go up more than the tip ends up costing. Restaurants just don’t have the kind of margins most people think they do. BOH labor gets expensive really fast. Tons (literally) of waste, stuff breaks, meals get messed up, you get it. It feels intuitive to me, but keeping labor costs low as possible usually works out well. Also, most servers I know are pretty chill with 15-20%, no one expects 25 really. This does all fall apart for the outlier guests who order the most expensive food and drinks as well as catering. We hosted an event that cost the people $30k, our team of 6 shared a 10% cut of that ($500 a pop) plus cash tips made in there. I’ll admit my labor that day was not worth $50/hour.

It’s down from 90 something 52 week high and is around 45 rn. If you know anything about Hawaii, it is that it’s run by oligarchy. If you believe the state of Hawaii will fail then don’t buy, if you think the state of Hawaii will do great then get into it. They own like 11% of all loans in Hawaii. High short interest rn too like 20%

Feels like even the banks without deposit issues are just a tweet away from having issues, so everyone is cautious on the space. Furthermore, if people are moving deposits, it's not to another regional, so deposits have asymmetric downside for regionals now. Which had an exceptional track record, extremely well diversified and depositors that will not pull their money and run, primarily because their money is insured and safe, and there are so few options for alternative banks, this bank being one of the oldest and best performing and managed.

Hawaii's banking market is different from any other. No mainland bank has any foothold in the market except Homestreet Bank with 5 branches. BOH and FHB basically dominate the market with Hawaii State FCU and HawaiiUSA FCU taking on the remainder for the most part.

The major issue is the run in deposits. The depositors at BOH are very different, these are locals with not many options. The average consumer balance is $18,000, with commercial at $134,000 which falls well below the FDIC-Insured limits. Making the depositors more sticky and less likely to move their money.

Looking at BOH, for example, Baa3 has a 2.3% 5 year cumulative default rate while Baa2 has a default rate of 1.3%, so the five year default rate increased by 1%, or 0.2% per year. This looks like a reduction in annual expected share return of 0.2%, if the two possibilities are "continue as normal" or "default and go bankrupt". However, the bank fell from 75 to 50 (33%) during this whole banking crisis, which suggests that share prices over-reacted by a lot. The stock is paying over 5% in dividends at P/E=9, about a 50% payout.

u/thetaFAANG, [I think everyone is holding some shitty bonds or securities at this point.](https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/20230313167/20-banks-that-are-sitting-on-huge-potential-securities-lossesas-was-svb) Some are a lot worse off than the two banks I talked about here, if you look at the ratio between accumulated other comprehensive income (AOCI) and total equity capital minus AOCI (TEC) AOCI / (TEC- AOCI) for these banks and compare it to others it looks about on par. It appears that a lot of banks hover around approximately -15% to -30%. In the table below I threw in some random other banks and a couple credit unions to give an idea of the spread. The NV BOH is about half real interest in public health and half industry stuffed shirts. Not all good news from the sc of nv. In a Supreme Court of Nevada decision, Caballos v. NP Palace, LLC, filed August 11, 2022, the court ruled, "Although Nevada has decriminalized adult recreational marijuana use, the drug continues to be illegal under federal law. Because federal law criminalizes the possession of marijuana in Nevada, its use is not 'lawful .. in this state' and does not support a private right of action under NRS 613.333. Further, because NRS 678D.510(1)(a) authorizes employers to prohibit or restrict recreational marijuana use by employees, an employee discharged after testing positive at work based on recreational marijuana use does not have a common-law tortious discharge claim" I really get chapped with the 'quasi legal' crap. Citizens can not legally grow if they live within 25 miles of an anointed pot store.

And if the team doesn't have the skills, hiring a professional is needed. Back office work is equally important as BOH and FOH. Payroll, Human Resources, and Bookkeeping are often overlooked. There's a 1-Michelin star restaurant in the Bay Area that's been around a few years. They're booked out about four to six weeks. They struggle to make payroll, often times bounce payroll checks. Been working in different kitchens nearly my whole life. I've seen so many good people being borderline abused. The industry breeds a toxic work environment that is glorified by modern cooking shows and somehow seen as okay. Customers don't care about you, Management doesn't care about you, all that matters is the product you're selling. If something goes wrong along the way, you bet your ass it's gonna be blamed on BOH. The pandemic has only made things worse. The food service industry is going to flatline because people are realizing it's not okay to work nightmare hours for poor pay in a high stress environment. I yolo for all the burntout coworkers I've left that have become too tired and hopeless to do anything else than be complacent to an industry that is eating them alive.

HOWEVER, I’d prefer to B about RH. Yet again I feel like they robbed me. I just had a feeling after driving side Ways for so long it was going to pop during their last report. I happened to already be trading options as it started to slightly love ahead of the call. I have a calendar I track any earning reports I wanted to play. I’ve legit never been so darn confident about any option play and especially related to earning. I was literally going to throw it all in. BUT ROBINHOOD. They had the date down for earnings as 8/2, so that’s where it was in my calendar. However, towards the end of July it popped AH. Joke on me- robinhood didn’t list the correct earnings date. I was happy I still had two options I cashed out with over $80k profit, but will forever be upset I didn’t have the right day. I would have played the weekly and those were up over 200,000% the next day. I would have been and overnight millionaire. It’s not the millionaire part that upsets me. It’s just that I didn’t even freaking trade on RH. My options were on fidelity, but I took the date from RH and I will forever be bitter about that. [proof- the next day. ](https://imgur.com/gallery/Ziet1us) I can’t even explain the hopeless feeling of knowing your instincts were so damn right and being an idiot to not look up earnings report calendar and trust chipotle.
